I’m offended both as a sex worker and as a rape survivor at the idea that choosing a job that departs from your misogynist ideas of sexual purity is somehow morally equivalent to being abused against my will.

I’m appalled as a rape survivor and as a sex worker that you consistently imply that I no longer belong to myself after having sex for pay or selling cam sessions, and list your inaccurate rape equivalence as the reason. Do you not see how disgusting that is, to say that rape means you now somehow belong to the rapist? Your ideas are rotten all through.

tl;dr: I do not become a product when I do this work, I am a person providing a service. Encouraging others to think of me as a product instead of a service provider contributes to my dehumanization and the dehumanization of all women who dare to be sexual in ways that threaten the heteropatriarchy.

This is a huge lesson, guys. Feminism means supporting all women’s decisions about her body, including choosing to partake in sex work. Doing so does not make a woman dumb, whorish, or any other names I’ve heard these women called. Often times, women who DO partake in sex work have to be very, very smart. Smart, and often times a step ahead of the game. Problem is that we have laws in place (at least here in Canada) that make it very hard for sex workers to protect themselves and their bodies. Laws make it hard to screen clients, to meet up anywhere for a review session before the service is provided, and makes it nigh impossible to provide the service in a way that protects the worker’s body. This isn’t cracking down on some immoral thing, guys - these laws put these women in danger. Sex work will continue to happen despite laws because it is legitimate WORK - making it illegal doesn’t help anybody. Anyways. I’m not a sex worker, but I’ve taken courses in gender and feminism and it’s a point of interest that I feel is super important. So let’s listen to the women who work in this industry and let them have their voices.

The best part of being a good ally to those in the sex trades is that you really don’t need to find a line, because what voluntary sex workers need and what trafficking victims need are fairly similar.

You don’t do trafficking victims a disservice by refusting to call any of us “fleshlights”. You don’t do anyone a disservice by not framing sex work as “girls who sell their bodies”. You’re not hurting rape victims by giving up rhetoric that implies that our bodies become property of our rapists.

That’s what this post is asking you to do - to stop talking like we’re things. Why would you say “but trafficking victims!” to that? Trafficking victims are also not things! They do not benefit from people talking over them and calling them fuckholes any more than voluntary sex workers do!

And decriminalization protects trafficking victims even more, honestly! right now civilian led programs to “rescue” trafficking victims are far more likely to get them assaulted by police, arrested, forced into sweatshops (another kind of trafficking….), and/or otherwise remove whatever autonomy they had already.

Outisders trying to help trafficking victims can start by listening to people who are actually being trafficked - because they are not voiceless, their bodies still exist, and they still have a better perspective on their needs than literally anyone else.

And maybe if you actually care about trafficking victims, start caring about farm labour trafficking and domestic labour trafficking too, because a lot of people seem only to like talking about trafficking because they like sad stories where women get raped a lot, and claiming to be an advocate for oppressed people while refusing to listen to people actually in that situation is not a good way to scratch that itch.

tl;dr if you’re concerned about trafficked peole in the sex trades don’t call them felshlights and fuckholes and talk about how they’ve sold their bodies either -  weirdly enough, increasing stigma and encouraging the idea that they’re disposable doesn’t help anyone!
