allow me to be a total hater for a second
so, i go to a private urban art school. i graduated high school at 17 and had moved countries and isolated myself, and then was relentlessly bullied up until graduation. i was really excited to come to art school because i knew it would be full of loser outcasted nerds like myself!
everyone here, almost every single person i have met is chronically online, has extreme main character syndrome, and are really inconsiderate (??!?!??) it's driving me NUTSSS
there are an ungodly amount of virtue signaling, performative, and just straight up rude students that populate art schools. i would have honestly preferred the pretentious type. my saving grace is a few real friends i have made (and my roommate) that are genuinely curious about me and don't just talk about themselves. they make an effort to converse about something that doesn't include media, tumblr/twitter, or their fuckass fursonas. it's like everyone is talking AT you, instead of WITH you. and what sucks is i put in so much effort to break the ice during classes, but it's RARELY returned.
the same people might see me digging at people with poor understanding of social cues and interaction as ableist, and to that i say, i am autistic and Don't Care. those people make me deeply uncomfortable during conversation which is ableist to me. so suck on that lol.
is there ANY sort of middle ground? i feel like i have to go hunting for people with a shred of self awareness and personality. all of the "debates" i've unintentionally gotten myself into (because art students love a good performance) are purely virtue signalling and just tumblr activist buzzwords. like these people don't understand what they're talking about. i'll be having a very nuanced and specific discussion and someone will butt in like "well the system is fucked" like yeah dude we know. care to expand on that past your tumblr degree?
anyway, those are my two cents on the art college experience. i hope someone out there can understand. if not, you might wanna look inward.
