FILIPINOS URGENTLY NEED YOUR HELP: A CALL TO ACTION
art by the wonderful @franshookie-art (DO NOT REPOST this image without their specific permission. check out more of their art on twitter.)
hi, all.. i know that a lot of our focus is on the BlackLivesMatter movement atm (which is wonderful and should’ve happened a long time ago), and i hate to distract you from that, but there’s something horrible happening in my country, the Philippines (yes, the one being lead by the so-called Filipino version of Donald Trump), right now.
our national government has passed a bill that’ll essentially take away our constitutional rights to freedom of speech and fair trial. it’s called the Anti-Terrorism Bill, but we’ve dubbed it Terror Bill. here’s a summary of what it entails:
if you want to read the actual bill in its entirety, here’s a link to the official Senate of the Philippines website, where you can download a pdf copy. i’d like you to keep in mind the political climate in our country, though, and just how rampant corruption and police brutality are here.
it has already been passed by the Senate; all it needs is the House of Representatives’ approval, and it will be enforced. if you want to help stop this from happening, here are a few ways:
sign and share this petition. we’re so close to 300,000 signatures!!!
send e-mails to the Office of the President and the Senate. there’s an e-mail protest currently going on. i have qualms about copy-pasting the message, but ultimately, this method is a lot more effective than petitions:
these posters were made and posted by @tentenyukki on twitter.
educate yourself about the bill and how it will affect us when it’s approved. here are some news articles, editorials, and thought pieces to get you started:
🗞 gov’t endorsing/defending the bill: 1, 2, 3, 4
🗞 reactions to the bill’s passing: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
spread the word. on social media, our tags are #JunkTerrorBill and #JunkTerrorBillNow, but don’t stop there; tell your friends and family. please. people need to know this is happening.
your help could save the lives of millions of Filipinos, and we’d really, really appreciate it. i don’t usually ask for much, but when it comes to urgent issues like this, i can’t stay silent. unlike with BLM, i can speak my truth about this because i know personally what it’s like to be a Filipino citizen and to live in the Philippines. i hope it’s heard, and we keep an ounce of what little dignity we have as a “sovereign” country and rights as a “sovereign” people.
some of you might unfollow or get mad because this isn’t strictly studyblr content, but it’s not about aesthetic right now. i need your help. we need to hurry.
thank you for taking time to read! let’s uphold human rights together. #JunkTerrorBillNow!
she's (me) back or sumthn ,,,
i'm not completely sure what the consensus is on smosh (or smoshblr) nowadays—not very up to date on videos, drama, etc. but im writing again!! and here's a preview (idek if ppl are gonna read it but who cares because i write for myself)
so this is a shaylivia fic based super heavily on this filipino film "that thing called tadhana", tadhana meaning destiny in english. it's on netflix (watch it!!) and it's a little cheesy but beautiful, so i wrote this about it.
Olivia tweeted this earlier and the amount of gross replies telling her it is the “Chinese virus” and that she’s playing the victim is truly revolting. If you call it the “Chinese virus” block me instantly and if you’re not a bad person please head over to twitter or Instagram and send Olivia some love.
im crying. they really said of course we support americans' rights. americans' rights to shut the fuck up.
Can like Olivia, Keith and Noah just start their own channel? I’d watch the shit out of that.
My baby was in a Pit video! She’s a star! She’s a winner!
someone: i love smosh!
me: !!!!!!me too!!
someone: i love everyone in the fam!

someone: courtney, ian, damien, and shayne!
me:

me:
i should clarify: there's nothing wrong with liking those four
but there's something icky about only acknowledging those four when talking about smosh as a whole/the smosh fam
mari is so damn funny and anyone who believes otherwise can actually fight me!!!!
Y’all better support Olivias podcast when it eventually airs- Baby’s working hard on it and deserves all of the love.
I love it when people are like: idk I think Keith is kind of obnoxious ://////// he’s always talking over everyone else he’s so loud ://///////
And then they turn around and go: omg I think Shayne is SOOOOOOOO FUNNY
they stole all my uwus and they can keep them
Hey guys, if this movie is showing wherever you are, please boycott it
There are so many things wrong with it and it is Extremely disrespectful to Filipinos.
1. Ferdinand Magellan was sent by Spain to search for Moluccas, but ended up on Philippine shores. This is during the time European colonizers competed with each other as to who gets to colonize most of the world.
2. This movie is framing Lapu-Lapu, a Filipino hero, as a villain. The irony right? Lapu-Lapu was a chief of his tribe. He led them to battle to protect them and their land from these colonizers. It was rightfully so.
3. These colonizers had the goal of taking Gold, converting people to their Christian God, and achieving Glory in conquering the rest of the world. These white men saw how much gold the Filipinos had and wanted them for themselves.
4. Knowing they made the colonizers the protagonists here, it's very likely the Filipinos will be portrayed as savages. Which is again, very disrespectful. There were early accounts providing that pre-colonial Filipinos were actually civilized. Do not believe the accounts likening Filipinos to monkeys. Our National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal has produced a written work debunking that and proving that pre-colonial Filipinos were civilized and had systems that worked in governing people. Pre-colonial Filipinos treated women as equals of men too.
5. And making that POC to be an ally of Magellan? Apalling. Her name is also the name of one of the major Philippine Islands which were also one of the first places Spain conquered in the Philippines.
6. They also made the Filipino chieftain of Cebu, highly dependent upon the colonizers to fix his tribe's problems. This was not at all the case. The tribe had a government system and its own rules to deal with predicaments. The heads of tribes which did not attack the colonizers, were converted into Christianity and it took blood compacts to seal agreements between the tribes and the colonizers.
7. People were also saying a lot of the character designs look unoriginal and that the designs were ripped off El Dorado. And a lot of the designs for the Filipinos don't even look like Filipinos.
So yeah. I'm just very heated about this. This is an atrocity and deserves no one to see it. May the spirits of the fallen pre-colonial warriors haunt and torment the scum behind this movie.
i had to sit through the trailer of this during a screening of another movie and i was just seething.
it's absolutely disgusting and they have absolutely no right to be revising history so that white fucking colonizers are the heroes. not when pre-colonial filipinos were civilized, had a rich culture, and built in norms.
my country was not colonized for an upward of 300 years so that white film makers could spew bullshit revisionist history at us.
AND, just a fun fact about what actually happened when Magellan and his troops ended up in the Philippines. THEY GOT THEIR ASSES HANDED TO THEM. the dumbasses really jumped out of their ships and thought they could fight in the water (they couldn't and lost ofc). Magellan himself was killed.
so, a big fat fuck you to these film makers. do not support this bullshit. - sincerely, a filipino.
