Earth’s Crust
This is our largest physical reservoir.
Our largest biologically useful reservoir!
The atmosphere is an inorganic sulfur reservoir.
This is a simple model of the process of the sulfur cycle and how it is spread through out the earth.
- Two main organic pathways
- Both release into atmosphere
- Sulfate from soil taken into plants
- Sulfur return to soil in manure and organic fertilizers
- Desulfurization in decomposition
Sulfur is released naturally through volcanic eruptions, ocean sea spray, and decomposition.
Hydrogen sulfide gas is released through decomposition or organic matter.
The increase of human intervention leads to more sulfuric acid, also known as acid rain.
Sulfur is a key component in Cysteine and Methionine.
Sulfur dioxide is often produced by point sources such as coal power plants and factories with large furnaces. Fortunately, US SO2 levels have dropped 33% between 1983 and 2002, though in 2005 it was reported that China had risen 27%, to reach levels comparable to the US in 1980.
Acid rain is associated with large amounts of sulfur dioxide to the atmosphere by human sources.
