“Which seems more christmas party to you – sparkly santa hat or sparkly reindeer ears?”
"What about both? It’s Christmas. You should go all out.”

Molly slid into the seat opposite her newfound conversation companion, finally placing the cinnamon hot chocolate she’d had precariously balanced in her hands on a flat surface. It might’ve been rude to sit without asking, but already a little bit of the drink had spilled over onto the saucer, and Molly wasn’t going to risk losing anymore. Music wasn’t her area of expertise – in fact, she knew very little about that particular art form, preferring to focus more on the visual, – but she could see the point he was making. It sounded a lot like how she viewed art. “So which are you,” Molly leaned forward, resting her chin on her hands with a smile. “The expressor or the drowner?”
Expressing himself had always been a struggle. Daisuke had dabbled in many things, honed in many skills before he realized that music was where he wanted to concentrate most of his energy. “Ah, well, I suppose a bit of both, but more of the expressor, I think.” For so long, Daisuke struggled with issues with his identity and feeling as if he belonged somewhere. Back then, he would have been more of the drowner, swimming in lakes while the rest around him climbed mountains. Now, however, even if his voice still didn’t carry and he often let his wife do most of the talking, he carefully crafted his messages within his musical pieces. “What about you? Do you have a favorite form of self-expression?”

“There’s a misconception that war only has the human cost, like lives and mental health and physical health and such but not so much other area’s like music, art, and such?” Molly couldn’t help commenting, even if she didn’t actually know the person who spoke – at least, not personally. Culture and the arts were an interest area of hers, and this commentary drew her in like a magnet. “I mean, I guess most people are at least vaguely aware of the Nazi regime and paintings, how it was plundered and all, but there’s not much awareness of the impact of war in general on the arts? Britain was really cool though and created this War Artists Advisory Committee to hire artists to accurately represent the war, though not too accurately or you would be censored, and not too abstractly because you’d be banned. Obviously, too, not in a way that made Britain look bad or promoted anything other than ‘British values’.” Molly paused to take a breath, finally realising just how much she had talked and how much she had derailed this conversation, and blushed. “sorry – i got completely sidetracked. It’s fascinating that something as innocent as a Christmas song could be impacted by war.”
"War permeates every aspect of life, considering that it’s the lowest display of humanity. It affects all parts of civilization, and is reflected in its culture. It says a lot about British culture, for example, that they spend a lot of time with their head in the sand and not owning up to their imperialistic ways. But I digress.” He pursed his lip, steering the conversation and reeling it back into territory that he was more comfortable with. He had far more expertise in music than he did on all-encompassing culture. “You are right, though, that they at least recognize the power of war War is hell, after all,” Daisuke quoted the famous, brief description of war that managed to describe it in so few words. “And there’s an escapism in music, I think. Or there are for some people, at any rate. The value of music depends on the person. Some use it to drown out the noise of the rest of the world while others use it to express themselves and scream back into the void. So to speak.”

November in England was as ridiculous to navigate as the struggle of finding sustenance before her current job had been, she sometimes thought. The elements seemed to battle with one more often than not, and even the immortal were not spared. Lenore tucked her mobile phone inside her bag and began rummaging through it in search of a bobble to pull her hair back, hoping she hadn’t lent her last one to a colleague in the pediatric ward. In her preoccupation, it was easier than she would have thought possible to walk into a bystander with an abrupt “Oof!”
Zombie mode had been activated after fourteen hours on the clock and Audrey was making a beeline to the nearest cafe where she could stick herself with a caffeinated IV. While bed was calling her name, she scarcely had time to do Christmas shopping and she wasn’t going to spend her afternoon off sleeping. She still had both of the girls to shop for, as well as Percy and Henry. Her husband out of all of them was always the worst to think of a present for and while she was pondering, she didn’t pay as much attention as she should have in her haste, holding up her hand to the individual who ran into her. “Sorry. I didn’t even see you coming.” Noting that the woman was inf act her colleague, she eased into a smile. “Ah, Lenore. Are you running on autopilot too?”
As I’ll Be Home for Christmas rang through the speakers, Bing Crosby crooning the tune away, Daisuke set down his cup of green tea, bottom lip curling into his mouth. “You know, once upon a time, we wouldn’t have been able to listen to this song here in Britain. It was banned during the Second World War in fear that it may hurt soldier morale. It’s interesting, I think, that war even has an effect on music.”

“Aye, cheers mate. Knew I could count on you to nick something off of. Where do you even get the money for this shite?” Declan bit into the burger without a second thought, never being one to make sure that what he was doing was actually fine, instead of a pressured decision that would soon be regretted. His life was one of taking, not asking. “I tried to take a bite out of that woman’s food over there and I think she nearly slapped me. Would’ve proven to be entertaining at least.”
Reed threw out a mischevious grin. “That’s for me to know and you never to find out. I’m not completely unresourceful, you know.” Truth be told, Reed did some odds and ends one-off jobs when he could. He would mow people’s lawns, help the old lady across the street with household chores, menial tasks to make enough cash to feed himself and keep the liquor supply going. “Unlike you, apparently. You didn’t really think that was gonna fly, did you? I can’t even get a woman I’ve known pretty much all my life to be all too happy about sharing food with me. You’rea pretty bloke, but that can only get you so far in life, man.”

“Are you going to finish that?” Declan asked bluntly, a large charming smile glued on his face as if he wore it like a mask. And he did. In fairness to him he hadn’t eaten a full meal in a few days, and money was running low as he tried to weasel his way into a new job. There were plenty of ideas running through his mind. The first of which was to get a job with his fellow wizards, but he was aware of his inability to stay hidden with his lack of prowess with a wand. Instead, a more sensible plan was to meet up with old acquaintances and get back into the old game. It wasn’t what he wanted. It wasn’t prestige, nor was it the lap of luxury. But starving wasn’t an option either.
Reed glanced down at his greasy burger that was perched in between his hands, globs of ketchup and mustard falling out of the bun and into basket. Typically, burgers were the perfect hangover food as if the grease absorbed the alcohol. Today, Reed just felt queasy, his stomach churning and rejecting the idea of food. Despite his discomfort, he threw on grin with ease, pushing his meal over to Declan. “Nah, you go on ahead. I already ate and I thought I was getting a second wind but I guess my eyes were just too big for my stomach. May as well not let it go to waste.”

“Well, your face needs to shut up, then,” Xander retorted without missing a beat, narrowing his gaze at Slate as per how their usual banter went. “Not to sound like an ungrateful brat, but the coffee runs were much easier. I do feel like I’m actually doing something to contribute, though,” he continued, this time more genuine. “How much is up for debate ‘cause, y’know, a lowly intern and all—”
"Now, Alexander, you aren’t being sensible,” Slate lightly mocked Xander’s more responsible, finely tuned tone. “It’s all about paying your dues, right? When I started working at the garage, I was stuck with the grunt work, being run ragged chasing after this kind of wrench and that kind of alternator and doing boring oil changes. It was a long time before I properly got to work under the hood. You’ll get there and this is a step in the right direction, yeah?”
