i've been remiss in mentioning the fbi guy sideplot (which i can totally see being a helpful movie addition to build up towards the book's comparatively more abrupt "we gotta get out of town" ending for the wormwood clan) but y'all. the fbi guys. mrs. wormwood CONVINCED they are speedboat salesmen. mr. wormwood equally convinced they are interested in his wife. now this part with the guys entering the wormwood home garage

fbi guy 2: nah, this guy's dirty. once we show this tape in court, wormwood's goose is cooked.

I accept it for the bit but that is Not how things like "LAW" or "COURT" Work

that final scene has so many bangers. mrs wormwood with the "we're moving to guam" bombshell while dumping miss honey's entire cookie platter in her purse. mr. wormwood's "we gotta beat the speedboat salesmen to the airport." matilda having her own adoption papers "since i was old enough to xerox" (SAD and also HILARIOUS)

anyways in terms of adaptations that hold to the spirit of the book imo this is a good one

#matilda liveblog #SUCH a fun movie adaptation i Will be rereading the book #anyways my takeaways are as usual #love miss honey & matilda #new takeaway is that harry and zinnia wormwood are that one genre of tumblr couple post #like “you'd be terrible for anyone else but you're perfect for each other”#like the total inverse of the addams family #they are horrible horrible people and abysmal parents but also so deeply in love?#anyways also a fan of how the movie wrapped up the miss honey & trunchbull throughline #there's no Huge miss honey moment where she Stands Up to trunchbull #besides when trunchbull grabs her wrist #but the weight of getting out from trunchbull's thumb #is carried simultaneously by that brief moment of “i'm not a child anymore”#and more saliently by the way miss honey completely remakes her childhood home in service of a new and kinder future #both for herself and matilda #the bones are still there #they were rotted by trucnhbull but they're there and it means something new can be built!#like jennifer was living with trunchbull since she was FIVE in the movie #that leaves so much time for her childhood home to stop feeling safe #she knows its hiding places better than anywhere else #and now she and matilda get to take up space in that house!#they get to use the front yard swing the way it's meant to be used!#anyways as you can tell i have lots of thoughts about this movie (and the book)#it may not be that deep but i have a shovel etc etc #altho in this case i kinda think it IS that deep #this is a narrative about two people who suffered physical (miss honey) and emotional (matilda) abuse #and how they find a loving family in each other!!#anyways i'm done now #matilda 1996 #i'm sure none of these thoughts are new but we're here and having fun with it

#i'm a huge fan of the book and i think it does this really well too #but especially in a movie #there's a second layer to all of their interactions before the Reveal #you can see all the microexpressions in their interactions #and hell the cinematography too!#this is such an interesting movie for the way it realllly plays into the angles #all the adults are framed like you're looking up at them (especially the adults in power: the wormwoods and trunchbull)#the kids get physically looked-down-on by the camera #and it's so much more egalitarian with miss honey! she's not framed like an overbearing figure when she's interacting with her students #they're all on the same level #BUT #when miss honey and trunchbull share a scene #there's just a SLIGHT angle of the camera up at trunchbull and down at honey #matilda 1996 #matilda #matilda liveblog
