ZINES ARE HERE! (I picked these up from the printers today)

The Last Time is a zine I made about the impulse to record, relive, remember and obsess over things that mark an end. I’ve been interested in this idea for a long time and spent the last year and half slowly collecting and researching before drawing it this summer. The end result is both a record of this process and collection and an attempt to understand why we mark endings the way we do.

I’m selling them for $12 (and can mail them to wherever). They’re 54 pages, and have lots of illustrations about sadness, Victorian death photography and Lonesome George the tortoise.

Also, thank you to everyone who shared and let me use their personal stories, as well as everyone who helped me workshop this at the beginning of the summer!

'What Next': A Sort-Of Answer

Though this began as a summer project we all decided that it has life outside that context. Seeing as we will have participants spanning Montreal and Toronto this group will exist as two offshoots till we reconvene next summer. Until then stay watching this blog for updates about the projects and work being undertaken by both over the next 8 months or so.

August 9th: Showcase

With all the workshops done, participants gathered to share the culmination of their work over the past four months in a small exhibition. In addition to to show each other and invited guests, we met to discuss moving forward and the big question of 'What next?'. Many thanks go out to all the friends and family who were able to join us for the afternoon. And a big hand of course to all the participants who have made these workshops such a pleasure and success.

August 5th Part II: Molly, Jacob, and Katie

As this was our last workshop day for the summer we tried to accommodate as many people as possible into the schedule. I was a diverse sampler pack of an evening. We began with a dance workshop lead by Molly exploring physical movements that represent what home meant to each of us. She will further be exploring these ideas in a dance piece in Toronto later this month. Next Jacob introduced us to the possibility of what it means to write fiction while using a fictional persona. We were asked to create a character on the spot and then to do a short piece of creative prose as though that character was the author. And lastly to round out the evening Katie provided the craft supplies to attach mercans (among other things) to a pair of underwear. A great way of addressing the stigma of body hair in modern society without getting bogged down in heavy political discussions.

August 5th Part I: Shayle

Addressing the theme of leaving home, Shayle asked us all to reflect on our experiences and emotions surrounding that resonant moment. Through movement exercises, reflective writing in groups and finally collaborative theatre we all were able to discuss the complex feelings that we can experience when asked to leave places that are important to us. Shayle will be exploring these ideas further with other theatre artists in Montreal during the coming months, a great first step towards something new and exciting.

July 29th: Miranda and Sasha

Combining their strengths, Miranda's visuals and Sasha's writing, they lead a workshop on the appropriation of fact into fiction. The group partnered up, first speed writing and then illustrating, each others stories. It had us all thinking about how we weave our own images and experiences into other people's stories.

July 20th: Shifra

Shifra led the group through an operatic piece of music and an installation of suitcases filled with objects the audience could arrange and examine. The subject of this presentation is the history of the Niavelt community; a continuation of a project she and others undertook a few years ago. Shifra is hoping to present the work in the next few years.

July 13th Part II: Nata

Moving from workshoping theatre premises to film scripts, we read through Nata's tv pilot on the treatment of people with mental disorders in society. The story revolves around a family of three female siblings and their reactions and fear surrounding their mother's schizophrenia and father's bi-polar disorder. Part family drama and part social commentary.

July 13th Part I: Tom

Tom has been working on the development of a script about his family's history and the history of the Minamata crisis in Dryden, Grassy Narrows and White Dog. Thanks to funding from the NAJC, Tom is about to travel to Grassy Narrows to meet the current residents there and gather interviews and stories. For his workshop, Tom led a discussion on political inheritance, appropriation and script-writing.

June 27th Part II: Odessa

Acting as a dry run for her workshop at the Hillside Festival in Guelph later this month, Odessa taught and supervised the creation of baskets woven out of old plastic bags. An environmentally conscientious way to reuse plastic bags and turn trash into something useful. Looking forward to seeing and hearing the results of her next attempt.

June 27th Part I: Tessa

In preparation for a zine, Tessa walked us through self portrait drawing and automatic writing about our childhood beliefs. From this, a discussion developed around the misconceptions, lies and half-truths that children are told and tell themselves. The zine will hopefully be ready for the Grounding Showcase at the end of the summer.

Jess Shane, June 8

Through exploring two scenes from Jess' new script (an adaptation of Jean Cocteau's Les Enfants Terribles) we discovered ways that people can come together to animate a puppet and that unexpected objects (a cardigan, boots, headphones) can have life breathed into them.

Zoe gave us an opportunity to explore different kinds of lasts: last conversations with people close to us, the last day spent in our childhood home, the last images recorded of missing people, the last animals of their kind. She lead us through the creation of pop-up books representing a particular last, which will likely be included in a zine she's putting together.

Liam showed us a series of glitchy, surreal GIFs that he said were taken directly from his phone camera, without editing. Most of us had difficulty believing that a phone could produce such images. We were convinced, though, as we bent over the fluorescent tubes placed in front of us and saw the same strange artificial patterns appear on our own screens.
