Orangutan population loss over the years

The total population of orangutans has been predictced to have at least halved within the last 50 years. The population numbers vary a lot between different studies, but the extremity of the population decline is undeniable.

Sumatran orangutans

While there are more remaining than previously thought, the Sumatran orangutan is critically endangered and only exist in North Sumatra. Population: 120 yrs ago (early 1900s): Over 85-90,000 75 yrs ago (early 1940s) ≈ 70,000 60 yrs ago (1960s) ≈ 27,000 Now ≈ 13,846

Bornean orangutans

The Bornean orangutan population has been estimated to have lost 148,500 individuals in the 16 years between 1999 and 2015, which is likely more than over 140% of the entire current population of Bornean orangutans, if not much more.

Tapanuli orangutans

The Tapanuli orangutan is the rarest of the three species, with less than 800 individuals remaining. They are now only found in a small area, Batang Toru, south of Lake Toba in Sumatra, but this is only 10-20% of the range they had 200 years ago. Their population is steadily increasing, but still at huge risk. Population: approximately 767.

All orangutan species are critically endangered and have been rapidly declining due to killing (for illegal pet trade and food) and deforestation (primarily palm oil).

My name is Ari. I’m a queer trans DID system and I have multiple disabilities and conditions that overlap and make my life a living hell. I am completely unable to hold any type of typical job due to the fact that I cannot hold my body upright for extended periods, stand for more than a few minutes, and am in constant severe pain.

Anyway!

Usually I manage okay off of my two partners’ income and whatever commissions I can get, but the three of us have just moved to a new state, which is great for us in the long run since we’ll finally all be far from our families, but their new jobs are withholding pay for weeks. There are a lot of house repairs desperately needed, including in-depth cleaning due to trace amounts of cat dander in some rooms that I have a hypersensitive anaphylactic allergy to. We need money to eat and get gas, and to get my medications until my Medicaid switches states. On top of that, our previous landlord is trying to illegally charge us for almost $1000 of “damages” which are all things that were present at our move-in, but they conveniently lost they paperwork saying so. We’re fighting it, but we won’t be able to afford a lawyer if they escalate.
