Iraq is Healing: The October Revolution, Systemic Change and Intergenerational Trauma

I have been called to write this article to share the struggle of my brothers and sisters in Iraq, who have been taking to the streets since October 25, 2019, demanding their country back. They deserve our attention.

A little glimpse of the panel and presentation on Take Care of Your Self at @narcynarce Concordia University class Beats, Rhymes and Life. Reliving this project again alongside my sisters @itsannickmf @jsparfums and @lucidcorpse was beautiful. All the other artists were there in spirit, represented through their work behind us on the big screen. Ah, this project is such a reminder of the importance of community-care, creating safe space, healing and empowerment in the context of the struggles and trauma’s of our beautiful POC communities. #IRAQ The land of all our ancestors (mine and yours). Consistently robbed of her chance at revolution. My heart breaks to see my people dying again, world turning a blind eye. This time though, my heart SWELLS with hope and inspiration that my people still have it in them to fight for dignity and a better future for our youth. She will rise again. It has been two years since Take Care of Your Self took place. This project is the gift that keeps on giving. It was a *safe* space, a healing space, a space for Black, Indigenous, Brown and “othered” folk, independent, empowering, and endlessly inspirational. I am so inspired by the incredible group of Arab writers and poets brought together by #RAWI2018. I was honoured to have facilitated an artist book workshop at this years conference. Love the work that came out of it, and the conversations it started. Yay! (at University of Houston)

For the past 5 years, I’ve been working on my illustrated book “Shams”, about a little girl made of glass. “Shams” made her first public appearance as the poster for the National Reading Week campaign in no other than Palestine. I am grateful for @tamerinstitute for Community Education and all the inspiring work they are doing in communities all over Palestine. Reading week is live. It’s my honour to having curated my sister @tamarabdul exhibit “Fade to Black” as part of @ridm_festival 2017. The work is up all of November at @cinemaduparc . Check out some of the dope documentary films at @ridm_festival while you’re at it, from Nov 9-19. “Fade to Black is a portrait series documenting African asylum seekers barbershop culture in South Tel Aviv. These Muslim and Christian Sudanese, Eritrean and Ethiopian refugees run barbershops, restaurants and clothing stores in the Levinsky Park neighbourhood. This series was born out of an appreciation for their personal style, and their self expression through their fashion and hairstyles.” #WATM (at Cinéma du Parc)
