December 1989. (6th year).
Nearly everyone has gone home for the Christmas holidays. Freyja has opted to stay behind at school, knowing nobody would be home this year. With limited options for social interaction, she eventually pays an unwelcome visit to an acquaintance who she knows hasnāt gone home for the holidays either.
With such a focus on family during the Christmas period, those unable or unwilling to go home for the holidays kind of stick out.
āI heard that Pennyās been trying to reconnect the school ghosts with their families.ā
āWho?ā
āPenny Haywood? Sunshine Hufflepuff girl? Her sister was trapped in a portrait last year?ā
āHuh. Well, she never came to me.ā
āYou never leave the bathroom, mate.ā

Duncan was never particularly close with his family. While they werenāt cruel, they werenāt warm and affectionate either. His fondest childhood memories were all related to one person. His Muggle Gran, second wife of his paternal grandfather. While his grandfather was alive, the rest of the family just about tolerated his second wifeās presence. But they never went out of their way to include her in any family affairs. Her only consistent interaction with the family was looking after Duncan, who she always enjoyed having round at her home. Now being dead several years, Duncan has no idea whatās become of his gran since then.

āBelfast. If sheās still alive, that is.ā
Honestly, Freyja was hoping to get something out of this interaction. She was getting bored and restless around the castle, and was looking for something, some sort of challenge or job to do. If that something was finding a way to get a ghost into another country, so be it.

A night time trip to the Restricted Section, with many hours of reading about the nature of ghosts, souls and binding magic. Working on the theory that ghosts are actually human souls and not just imprints of the soul, Freyja comes up with a (completely experimental and definitely reversible) way of tethering Duncanās soul to herself, allowing him to follow her as far as she goes.
