hi! i've just started "failure to comply" and love it so far. i hope to read "differential diagnosis" next. i was wondering if you had any nonfiction anti-psychiatry book recommendations? or any in general that you might recommend to someone who's read a lot of articles and opinions online but is hoping for something more substantial and in-depth? tysm!
hi anon, thanks for reading! i wrote F2C while deeply enamored/invested in reading Foucault, Deleuze, etc., which is probably obvious. certainly check out those like, "classics" if you haven't yet, as well as texts analyzing them. I assume, though, that when you ask for antipsych books, you're mostly interested in books that explicitly orbit critical Mad studies, and since this is my area of academic specialization :3
Liat Ben-Moshe, "Decarcerating Disability" and "Disability Incarcerated"
La Marr Jurelle Bruce, How to Go Mad Without Losing Your Mind
Margaret Price, Mad at School
Remi Yergeau, Authoring Autism (more "critical autism studies", but absolutely vital writing on epistemic & rhetorical violence)
Eric Stanley, Atmospheres of Violence
Jennifer Kilty, Containing Madness: Gender and ‘Psy’ in Institutional Contexts (varied in quality fyi)
Bren LeFrançois et al, Mad Matters (this is like one of the OG mad studies books)
I'd also recommend checking out some edited collections - there's the Mad Scholars Anthology (which I'm in, lol) and the Routledge Handbook of Mad Studies, both of which are varied in quality and relevance by virtue of being edited collections, but yeah, worth a skim to find the good stuff.
hope this helps!!

are you “adaptable” or are you just willing to subject yourself to existing in low key background-level ambient misery
these are different things btw. actual adaptability means not dealing with being miserable long term. and being constantly mildly annoyed/frustrated with a situation but being “able to deal with it” counts as ambient misery. btw.
let this be your sign to make your life just a little more livable. get a dollar store trash can for your bedside so Cup City’s invasion plans fall through. block a tag or post that makes you grind your teeth every time you see it. get some grip pads so your bed stops sliding across the hardwood a little bit every time you get in it. tell that person you need a little more support. if you get annoyed at a situation more than a couple times, change it. don’t be content with being miserable.

you think that you're so alone in the world then you read literature from hundreds of years ago and you realize that other people have always felt this way
