Angst Reader X Aot
(Pairings: Reader x Eren, Reader x Armin, Reader x Jean, Reader x Reiner)
part 1 ig
The mess hall was louder than usual.
Nobody had enough energy to be loud, really. It was the kind of noise that came from exhausted people who had been running on bad food, sore muscles, and spite since sunrise.
Boots scraped against the floor. Tin cups knocked against tables. Someone near the kitchen was arguing about whose turn it was to clean the dishes.
Y/N barely heard any of it.
Her shoulders were killing her.
She dropped into the seat at the end of the table and stared at the bowl in front of her.
Cold stew.
Again.
“Fantastic.”
Jean dropped into the chair across from her.
“You complaining?”
“I’m observing.”
“Same thing with you.”
She looked up.
Jean was rubbing his shoulder with one hand, his hair a mess from training.
“You look awful.”
“So do you.”
“Thanks.”
“Anytime.”
He reached for the bread.
Y/N moved the basket away before he could.
Jean stared at her.
“What?”
“You already had three.”
“I had two.”
“You had three.”
“I had two.”
“You had three.”
Jean sighed.
“Fine. I had three.”
She pushed the basket back.
“Thank you.”
He grabbed another piece.
Y/N shook her head.
“You're going to complain about being sick tomorrow.”
“I don't complain.”
“You complained for twenty minutes about your shoulder.”
“That was different.”
“How?”
“It hurt.”
“So does everything.”
Jean opened his mouth.
Then closed it.
“Fair.”
Y/N smiled and returned to her stew.
Across the table, Eren dropped into his seat hard enough to make the cups jump.
“I'm going to kill that bastard.”
Jean didn't even look up.
“Who?”
“Reiner.”
“Why?”
“Because he kept getting in my way.”
“You mean during the exercise where we were supposed to work together?”
Eren's jaw tightened.
“He wasn't working together.”
“He was literally doing what the instructor told him.”
“He was slowing me down.”
Jean finally looked up.
“Because you weren't following the formation.”
“I was.”
“You weren't.”
“I was.”
“You—”
“Okay.”
Y/N didn't raise her voice.
She didn't need to.
Both of them looked at her.
She picked up her spoon.
“Can you two wait until after I've eaten before you start trying to kill each other?”
Jean snorted.
“I wasn't trying to kill him.”
Eren glared.
“You were.”
“I was trying to make a point.”
“Your point was stupid.”
“Your face is stupid.”
“Jean.”
“What?”
“Stop.”
Jean grumbled something under his breath.
Y/N reached for the bread basket and tossed a piece at him.
He caught it.
“What was that for?”
“Your mouth.”
“That's not how bread works.”
“Then figure it out.”
Jean stared at her for a second.
Then he laughed.
Eren's expression softened by half an inch.
The tension dropped.
Barely.
But enough.
Y/N returned to eating.
She'd learned that arguing with Eren when he was already angry only made things worse.
He needed somewhere else for the anger to go.
Food worked sometimes.
Mocking Jean worked surprisingly often.
Silence worked when nothing else did.
Tonight, though, Eren was still wound tight.
He pushed his bowl away.
“I'm sick of this.”
Jean looked over.
“Of what?”
“Everyone acting like I'm the problem.”
Nobody answered.
Eren leaned forward.
“I did what I was supposed to do. I took the lead. I got there first. I would've finished the exercise if Reiner hadn't—”
His hand slammed against the table.
Armin flinched.
It was tiny.
Barely noticeable.
Y/N noticed.
Armin's fingers had stopped moving.
His eyes were fixed on the table.
He'd been quiet since they sat down.
Too quiet.
Y/N nudged his cup toward him.
“Drink.”
Armin blinked.
“What?”
“Your tea.”
“Oh.”
He picked it up.
His hand shook slightly.
Y/N reached for the sugar bowl and slid it toward him.
“Two.”
Armin looked at her.
“You remember?”
“You always use two after training.”
A tiny smile appeared.
“Right.”
He added the sugar.
Across the table, Eren was still talking.
“—and then he has the nerve to tell me I need to learn teamwork. I know how to work with people.”
Jean laughed.
Eren turned.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“You're laughing.”
“Because you said you know how to work with people.”
“I do.”
Jean looked around the table.
“Name three people you haven't pissed off this week.”
Eren stood.
“Say that again.”
Jean leaned back.
“Gladly.”
Y/N closed her eyes.
“Please don't.”
Nobody listened.
Eren's chair scraped backward.
Jean stood too.
Armin immediately started talking.
“Guys, maybe we should—”
His voice got caught halfway.
Eren and Jean were already facing each other.
“Sit down,” Y/N said.
Neither moved.
She stood.
“Both of you.”
Jean looked at her.
“He started it.”
“I don't care.”
Eren scoffed.
“Why are you taking his side?”
Y/N stared at him.
“I'm not.”
“Then why are you—”
“Because I'm tired.”
That shut him up.
Y/N pointed at his chair.
“Sit.”
Eren stared at her.
For a moment, it looked like he might argue.
Then he sat.
Jean followed.
Y/N looked at Jean.
“You too.”
“I was already—”
“Jean.”
“Fine.”
He sat.
Y/N exhaled and rubbed her forehead.
“God.”
A few seats away, someone laughed.
The tension broke again.
Eren picked up his cup.
“I'm still right.”
Jean rolled his eyes.
“Sure.”
“I'm serious.”
“I know.”
“Then stop—”
“Eren.”
He stopped.
Y/N didn't even look at him.
“Eat.”
A pause.
“I'm not hungry.”
“Eat anyway.”
“Why?”
“Because you're angry, exhausted, and running on three hours of sleep.”
Eren stared.
“How do you know I only slept three hours?”
“You were awake when I got water.”
“Oh.”
“Eat.”
He picked up his spoon.
Jean looked at Y/N.
“You're scary.”
“Good.”
He grinned.
Armin laughed quietly.
Y/N glanced at him.
“There.”
Armin looked confused.
“What?”
“You laughed.”
He blinked.
“I did?”
“Yeah.”
“I guess I did.”
His smile faded a little.
“Sorry.”
“Why are you apologizing?”
“I don't know.”
Y/N studied him.
His knee was bouncing beneath the table.
Fast.
Too fast.
She reached under the table and tapped her boot against his.
Once.
His knee stopped.
“Breathe.”
Armin inhaled.
Slowly.
Then again.
His shoulders dropped.
“Better?”
He nodded.
“Yeah.”
“Good.”
She went back to her food.
Nobody commented.
Nobody needed to.
At least, that's what she thought.
---
Later, when most of the regiment had left, Y/N was still at the table.
Jean had gone to complain to someone about his shoulder.
Eren had been dragged away by Reiner.
Armin was gathering the cups.
Y/N stood.
“I'll do those.”
“You've already done enough.”
“I'm fine.”
Armin gave her a look.
“You're terrible at lying too.”
She smiled.
“Apparently it's contagious.”
He laughed.
They collected the dishes together.
For a few minutes, neither spoke.
Then Armin said quietly,
“Thank you.”
Y/N looked over.
“For what?”
“For earlier.”
She shrugged.
“You would've calmed down eventually.”
“Maybe.”
He put another cup on the stack.
“I don't know how you do that.”
“Do what?”
“Make everything feel…”
He hesitated.
“Less bad.”
Y/N smiled.
“Practice.”
Armin looked at her.
“Does anyone do that for you?”
Her hand stopped.
Only for a second.
Then she picked up another cup.
“Do what?”
“Make things less bad.”
Y/N looked at him.
Armin waited.
She could have answered honestly.
She could have said no.
Instead, she smiled.
“I'm usually okay.”
Armin nodded.
“Right.”
He didn't question it.
Y/N carried the dishes toward the kitchen.
Behind her, Armin watched.
He almost said something.
Almost.
But someone called his name from the hallway.
“Armin!”
He turned.
Annie.
His expression changed immediately.
Y/N saw it.
“Go.”
“You sure?”
“Yeah.”
He hesitated.
Then smiled.
“Thanks.”
He left.
Y/N stood alone in the mess hall.
She looked at the empty chairs...
She sighed.
Then picked up the last cup.
“I'm usually okay.”
She repeated it under her breath.
The lie sounded convincing enough.
So she kept it.
soooo basically y/n or like the reader is like the person everyone goes to when theyre struggling, but she has this ability to take their emotional pain and carry it for them. eren gets calmer, armin gets less anxious, jean becomes more confident, yaddah yaddah and they all slowly get better without realizing WHY 😭 meanwhile y/n is getting worse bc shes literally carrying all their shit for them and nobody notices. until she finally reaches her limit and everything theyve been avoiding comes crashing back… yeahhh i think im cooking w this one
