Dumbass Trio + Amber Band AU Headcanons
(with a dash of tyrus bc i miss my boys 😔)
i know this is a pretty popular headcanon but i just wanted to write some of my own!! 🥰
* The band starts out just being the dumbass trio (jonah, marty, & tj) just fucking around in TJ’s garage. After Andi’s party Jonah is really excited that TJ can play piano and won’t stop hassling Cyrus to talk to his boyfriend for him
* “Why can’t you just talk to him yourself, Jonah?”
* “Because! I can’t just go up to him and ask him to play with me! That’s totally weird! But TJ really seems to like you so, yaknow, if you put in a good word for me- make me sound cool, then he’ll totally want to jam out sometime!”
* Cyrus can’t believe this is what his life has come to. Jonah Beck asking him to make him look cool to TJ Kippen, his boyfriend. What kind of fever dream is this?
* Later when Cyrus relays this information to TJ at the swings TJ just sighs
* “He put you up to this, right”
* “He may or may not have, who’s to say”
* TJ sighing-is-my-second-language Kippen sighs again and jumps off the swing
* “Tell him if he wants to play with me he’ll have to ask me himself,” he reaches his hand out to Cyrus who’s still swinging, “Now are we gonna go get baby taters or are we just going to stay here and talk about how great Jonah is at guitar,”
* Cyrus just rolls his eyes fondly because can his boyfriend not be emo and dramatic for one second
* Marty catches wind of this whole echange, I don’t know how he just does. (From Buffy. That’s how.) He immediately makes it known to Jonah that he knows how to play bass.
* From here Jonah excitedly interrupts Bowie at work to brag about his new band (take note that they’ve literally never played together, but give him a rest he’s excited)
* Bowie’s all like, “You guys should play at the open mic!!” and Jonah, neighborhood sunshine boy, thinks this is a brilliant idea and signs them up right away
* Turns out when the “band” gets together for the first time in TJ’s garage- let’s just say they absolutely suck
* At this point Jonah is STRESSING out because what the heck?? Where’s his oscar winning band????? Why are all of his dreams NOT coming true in this Chili’s tonight??
* Anyways fast forward to open mic night and the band has not improved what so ever. They decide to perform “I Cried” because it seemed to be a hit in Shadyside but the problem is none of them really knew how to write the chords for bass or keyboard to go along with the guitar and vocals
* TJ decides to just play along with whatever seemed best and improvise but Marty has zero idea what he’s doing so he just plays the same chord the entire time and hopes for the best
* Before they go on Jonah turns to Marty and just deadpans, “Marty I’m scared.”
* Spoiler alert: it doesn’t go well
* Jonah’s so nervous that his voice cracks like five times and TJ just wants to go home
* Marty’s having the time of his life though because it’s always been a dream of his to perform on stage
* Afterwards #1 supportive boyfriend Cyrus Goodman tries to play it off like they did wonderfully
* “Oh my gosh! TJ that was so good! Everyone in Shadyside will be talking about you guys by tomorrow morning!!”
* Buffy, never one to hold back, quickly shatters the illusion
* “You guys better pray that no one’s talking about that,” to which Cyrus gives a very disappointed glare
* Enter Amber Kippen in all her glory
* “You guys need a drummer.”
* Because well,,, yeah. No ones keeping the mf beat- this band is a disaster
* And of course Marty’s like, “Yeah, do you know one?”
* Amber’s like, “Yeah, me.” because this is really cheesy and cliche which makes it 100% better
* Cue Jonah and Marty: :o
* TJ just rolls his eyes, because no this is him and his friends, Amber doesn’t get to butt into this!! He already has to share Cyrus with her- can’t he have one thing to himself??
* Bc he’s emo and like #justsiblingthings ahaha
* Much to his dismay Marty and Jonah immediately shout “YES” because now they actually have a shot at sounding good!
* And the rest is history (except no it’s not i just haven’t written it yet so,, stay tuned for part two)
