Was tagged by @nerdinsandals for a WIP? Well I have been slacking lately, but I can show off some progress for a remake of an old college artwork.

The idea of the original was to a. Draw Trip stealthily b. Split it into black and white c. Drip color between the cut.

Watercolor took me an embarrassingly long time to get right and I wanted something simple enough to get done on time. The color wound up like a huge scarf and… everything was drawn wrong lol!

I decided I would remake it since I have been studying composition and narrative in art lately. Since it didn’t actually have one - it felt right to springboard off of.

The cut became a beheading and the drip something that oozes out either despite himself or something he reveals on his own. Keeping the oppressive black overcoming his shoulders and a white shirt beneath to contrast it.

While I love the fear in his eyes as his colorful insides betray his bw world… I’m far more interested in the moodiness of the blue blood. It fits how Trip was negatively received (beheaded) and the privileged part of his character. To feel blind pride at one point then disgust at your own history is something that sings to me as a fellow white American, I suppose.

Of course the real challenge is to communicate that even if no one knows who he is or the discourse his existence caused. So I’ll probably keep the dismayed look knowing there is nothing you can do about the past and with that blue blood. Perhaps zoom in some more.

Now it’s 3am so I’ll leave it for the morning.
