he beat you again. how was that possible? and this time for only about 0.32 seconds.
being the best swimmer in your team is definitely a burden sometimes. everyone depends on you to win the practice competitions your coach made up with the coach of the partner college next town. although it can be a good practice method, it is still humiliating to get beaten over and over again. you really want to avoid his face but unfortunately you're stuck in the swimming hall every two weeks.
no one really takes the competitions seriously, except you and sunghoon. It's a bloodbath.
sunghoon climbs out of the pool with a shit eating smirk on his face. he ruffles his silver ,wet hair and walks towards you confidently, his chest swelling full of pride and with a look on his face already telling you that he’s not letting you off easily.

suddenly you hear someone opening the door, exposing the noise in the pub for a vast second.
a dark figure is slowly approaching .
you squint your eyes to see who it is but your blurry vision makes it hard to recognize the silhouette.
“uhm, soobin wanted me to give you this water bottle.” sunghoon offers the bottle with an awkward look on his face. you slur incoherent words trying to ignore his presence, hoping he would just leave again, but suddenly you feel sunghoons hand aggressively grabbing your shoulder. he tries to make you sit straight.
you probably look as bad as you feel. your cheeks and nose are glowing and probably bright red, your eyes are barely open.
“look if you wanna die here, do it, i don’t care but i don’t want to be responsible, okay m/n?” sunghoon huffed. you manage to roll your eyes but regret it immediately as everything starts to spin even more.
“you know, if i wasn’t so drunk, i would’ve already…, i would’ve punched your face already.” your voice is just slurring at this point and you start to lose the ability to even understand words. you give your intoxicated state the fault.
”dude, how much did you drink?” he asks unbothered and with an annoyed undertone.
“i lost all the games.” you say while snatching the water bottle out of sunghoons grip and taking a big gulp of water.
his head tilts slightly, a mischievous smile slowly creeping on his lips.
“it would’ve been a surprise if you’d win a game for once.” he snickers.
“no wonder you couldn't go to the nationals, if you can't even manage to win a simple drinking game“
the birds in your stomach finally shut up. replaced with pure fire, adrenaline rushes through your body, and before you can even think, your fist smashes right into sunghoons face.
the brute force made sunghoon almost fall to the ground. hand on his nose, droplets of blood dripping between his fingers , the look in his face completely taken aback. the shock doesn't last long, he hisses from the pain and anger, not hesitating for more than a second before punching you back.
“fucking bastard. i was trying to be nice and you ruined my face like this?!”
you make an animalistic noise while jumping on him in pure rage, landing another punch on his face. you didn’t care about the consequences anymore, punching him felt so liberating. you finally gave him what he deserved. it was pure bliss.
“it was your fucking fault that i couldn’t go, you motherfucker!“ sunghoon wrestles himself on top . he didn’t even give you the chance to get back up before kicking you right in the stomach.
“how do you think i feel, m/n?” he screams. you feel another hard kick right where your ribs are. “my whole career was almost ruined because the coaches saw more in you than in me” the third kick almost made you vomit.
“am i crying because i didn’t get the scholarship? no.’’ he grabs you by the collar of your shirt, spitting the words in your face. by now it would be a miracle if no one heard what was happening outside.
you're able to turn over just in time before you start vomiting and everything turns blurry. you slowly close your eyes, not fighting against the urge to lay your head down. you see people coming towards you .your head is ringing to the point you can't hear anymore. the last thing you remember before blacking out is seeing yeonjuns worried face and sunghoon getting dragged by the others.

a groan from you makes the two people standing at the window turn around to look at you with wide eyes. they're both wearing the same clothes as last night ,but the setting wintersun outside of the window tells you it was late in the day and with a slight feel of doom you realize that you were passed out almost a whole day.
you look around the room trying to understand where you are, observing the cold energy of a lackluster hospital room. the smell of antiseptic mixed with the nauseating smell of sickness and helplessness makes you want to get out of the bed and run away immediately. you hate hospitals. and you hate that you can't even really explain why. something about it makes you feel stuck, like you can never escape this prison.
a clock on the plain white wall tells you it is already past 4pm,
did you really sleep that long ?
before you can sort out a single thought, yeonjun and kai run up to your bed, immediately greeting you with their worried looks. you notice that kai has a suspicious shimmer in his eyes and you see by the redness of his face that he has been crying.
“oh my god, m/n, you’re awake!’’
kai plops down at the edge of the bed, looking quite exhausted.
the sudden commotion left an unpleasant ringing in your ears and you slowly start to feel last night's events in the form of a nasty headache.

jun spat out and started angrily walking circles in the small room.
"the others already went home ,but we stayed to make sure you wake up" kai explained quietly.
"the next time i see that piece of shit i will break his shoulders so he’ll never be able to-’’yeonjun continued his rampage. you grab his arm weakly, which forces him to stop stomping around.
“can you please shut up, i have a headache." you say while pulling your pillow over your face to dull your overly strained senses.

the man next to him ,who is unmistakably the doctor, greets you with a quick nod and shifts his attention back to the paper in his hands.
"good morning m/n ,im dr. kim, we've done some tests already to detect possible serious injuries, but since you're awake finally we can make sure no bones are broken"
the doc gives you an encouraging smile, that doesn't really reach his tired eyes.

with your friends help, you manage to strip out of your shirt, who hiss at the sight of your upper body.

"well, you're very lucky m/n ,there are no broken bones." dr. kim says while writing something down on his papers.

"he needs bed rest for at least 2 weeks"

"well, until he is not fully healed there is no way he can participate in any sport activity. he will be able to swim again in approximately 6 weeks IF-" he looks at your friends with a strict expression "he puts all effort in his recovery. he should also shorten the consumption of alcoholic drinks" commenting the unmistaken stench of beer lingering in the air.
kai throws his hands in the air and the coach sighs in defeat.
after doctor kim left, silence filled the room.
you could swear the coach grew a few new grey hairs in the course of the last minutes, he also looked about 10 years older.

the cables rip out one by one and your father jumps out of bed right towards you, the cables hanging off his body like tentacles. you run and run ,the long hospital floor suddenly changing to your old apartment complex.the old balconies and concrete foundation are familiar, but it looks older, like years have passed. your legs get weaker and it feels like an invisible force slows you down with every step. you look back at your father who is still mercilessly chasing you down, when you don't notice a crack on the ground and fall with your full body length. the monster is towering over you now, victory in his empty eyes. he raises his foot, smashing it down on your torso, his eyes glimmering with satisfaction. you could feel your ribs break like thin branches, the nauseating cracking sound echoing in your ears. he raises his leg again. and again. and again. you just feel pain, nothing exists except pain. you look at the monster's face, squinting your eyes through the tears. you lock eyes with sunghoon. your father and his face changing every second but the sadistic expression staying the same. all physical pain on earth was not as bad as the feeling of your heart shattering at that moment.
with a loud gasp you wake up from your dream, sweat and tears rolling down your body.

"I see you're happy to see me!" he snickers while putting his hands up like you pointed a gun at him. with a nonchalant move he throws a bouquet of flowers on your bed.
"I got these for you on the way here, I think that's what you do when you beat someone up, right?" his expression one shade away from menacing. you were not in the mood for his bullying today, your body was still trembling uncontrollably and you could barely form words. "please leave"

"oh, my! what happened to you dear?" a middle aged woman, presumably a nurse, rushes to your bed and checks your pulse. you feel a little prick on your arm and suddenly a wave of calmness overcomes you. "come on, calm down with me. breathe in…and out. follow my breath." you do as you're told, still shivering, until you're able to breathe at a normal pace again. "I gave you something to calm down." the nurse explains. "do you want me to help you change your clothes? you're completely drenched in sweat!".
"yeah, that would be nice please." you reply slightly ashamed of yourself, still out of breath like you just ran a marathon. "I am glad to help you, dear! oh, did the handsome young man get you these?" you follow her eyes to the bouquet of pink camellia that fell down to the ground during all of the commotion. you nod reluctantly. "ohh, how nice of him, and you're both so handsome oh my!" she squirms. "I'll put them in a vase for you!"
"you can throw them away or keep them" you reply, not interested one bit in looking at them any longer than needed.

busy with your thoughts you didn't notice two men entering the room at first. your throat goes dry immediately, when you recognize one of them as your coach. a twitch of his eyelid and the dark circles under his eyes already promise no good. you adamantly avoid eye contact and a clump forms in your throat.
your coach is usually a patient person, if he is mad, you're in a different level of trouble.
the man next to him ,who is unmistakably the doctor, greets you with a quick nod and shifts his attention back to the paper in his hands.
"good morning m/n ,im dr. kim, we've done some tests already to detect possible serious injuries, but since you're awake finally we can make sure no bones are broken"
the doc gives you an encouraging smile, that doesn't really reach his tired eyes.
he orders you to sit up, which you obediently follow. a sharp pain flashes through your chest and you wince in pain.
with your friends help, you manage to strip out of your shirt, who hiss at the sight of your upper body.
your whole torso is painted in blue and purple.
with skilled hands, the doctor starts examining your injury.
"well, you're very lucky m/n ,there are no broken bones." dr. kim says while writing something down on his papers.
relieved exhales can be heard.
"although.." he looks at you over the rim of his glasses.
"your ribs are heavily fractured and are very prone to damage further ,if not treated accordingly" he says with a serious look in his eyes.
"are you feeling any dizziness, nausea? "
now that he mentioned it, your stomach made a rumbling noise. you swallow down the unwell feeling and nod unreluctantly. he scribbles down some more.
"there is a high chance you have a concussion" he explains. he finishes his notes and finally turns to your coach.
"he needs bed rest for at least 2 weeks"
"what about swimming"? yeonjun interrupts him.
"well, until he is not fully healed there is no way he can participate in any sport activity. he will be able to swim again in approximately 6 weeks IF-" he looks at your friends with a strict expression "he puts all effort in his recovery. he should also shorten the consumption of alcoholic drinks" commenting the unmistaken stench of beer lingering in the air.
kai throws his hands in the air and the coach sighs in defeat.
after doctor kim left, silence filled the room.
you could swear the coach grew a few new grey hairs in the course of the last minutes, he also looked about 10 years older.
"this is not good..not good" the coach mumbles into the palm of his hand.he finally looks you in the eyes.
"i'm incredibly disappointed in you m/n. how could you let go of yourself like that? you're an athlete, not some thug! this puts our school, our team AND the neighboring school in a really bad light, you're lucky the pub didn't call the police on you two" his voice rising with every word.
"it was not only my fault, he provoked me!" you started to get angry. all of this was so unfair!
"trust me ,if we find sunghoon i will have a word with him too. this will not be left unpunished!"
you were confused.
"find him? he is not in the hospital?" a small part of you was disappointed that his injuries were not as severe as you thought in the beginning.
"he vanished immediately after jake dragged him away" kai answered your question while sharing a nervous glance with yeonjun.
"we tried to stop him, but he was suddenly gone and no one has been able to reach him"
this definitely surprised you. anger started to rise again. that coward couldn't even take the consequences of his actions?
“i know you and sunghoon have a complicated past but you both took it too far this time"
the coach sighs again.
"we'll talk about this when he shows up, try to… rest"
after coach left, all attention went back to you. your teammates' pitiful looks made your headache even worse.
that damn bastard.
white plain walls. the steady sound of life, brought by diverse machinery.
beep… beep… beep…
you wish it would just stop. you hated this place, but you hate him more.he is laying there, not looking at you, his body just skin and bones. everything remaining of him was wired up, keeping him alive artificially.
he's staring out of the window, watching a group of children play. laughter and careless screaming echoing through the room.
he finally looks at you, but as if you were a stranger.
"why did your mom die for a faggot like you." he spat out with so much disappointment in his eyes that it made your heart shrink. it was almost bizzare to see such a frail body filled with so much hatred. you focus on the wall behind him again, your eyes burning. why do you still depend so much on his opinion about you? it's not like he will be here for much longer. you both knew that.
he suddenly cries out. "you should’ve died instead of her!"
the cables rip out one by one and your father jumps out of bed right towards you, the cables hanging off his body like tentacles. you run and run ,the long hospital floor suddenly changing to your old apartment complex.the old balconies and concrete foundation are familiar, but it looks older, like years have passed. your legs get weaker and it feels like an invisible force slows you down with every step. you look back at your father who is still mercilessly chasing you down, when you don't notice a crack on the ground and fall with your full body length. the monster is towering over you now, victory in his empty eyes. he raises his foot, smashing it down on your torso, his eyes glimmering with satisfaction. you could feel your ribs break like thin branches, the nauseating cracking sound echoing in your ears. he raises his leg again. and again. and again. you just feel pain, nothing exists except pain. you look at the monster's face, squinting your eyes through the tears. you lock eyes with sunghoon. your father and his face changing every second but the sadistic expression staying the same. all physical pain on earth was not as bad as the feeling of your heart shattering at that moment.
with a loud gasp you wake up from your dream, sweat and tears rolling down your body.
not again.
your body feels hot and cold at the same time, trembling uncontrollably. it feels like you've actually run for ages and you're so exhausted you feel like crying. it's been a while since you dreamt of your father, let alone thought about him. no matter how much time passes, seeing his face sets you back to the time you were a little boy with no strenght to defend yourself.
"why are you crying? are you scared of me now?"
you hear some rustling in the corner of your bedpost, a dark silhouette towering over you hidden in the shadows. your eyes try to get used to the dark hospital room, only lighted by the dim moonlight shining through the windows. the person takes a step towards the light source. the moon reflects his silver hair, almost making it seem like it was lightning up. he looked like porcellain, although you could clearly see a black eye painting his otherwise flawless skin. his lips where parted slightly and you could also see a cut at the bottom lip.
"what do you want here?"
you ask with a passive aggressive undertone, but more taken aback than anything. your voice was also shaking slightly, making your genuine confusion even more apparent.
"I see you're happy to see me!" he snickers while putting his hands up like you pointed a gun at him. with a nonchalant move he throws a bouquet of flowers on your bed.
"I got these for you on the way here, I think that's what you do when you beat someone up, right?" his expression one shade away from menacing. you were not in the mood for his bullying today, your body was still trembling uncontrollably and you could barely form words. "please leave"
your voice sounds incredibly weak.
he looks at you with big eyes, this was obviously not the response he expected. his expression only slipped up for a second before his face got the usual arrogant look again. "did I beat out the sharp tongue of yours? I'm apologizing and this is how you treat me?" you're barely listening to him anymore. you were gasping for air and you could taste your tears running in your mouth, you felt incredibly hot.
you're having a panic attack.
"leave!!" you cried out. your voice was shaking and barely understandable.
no matter how often this has happened, you're still as helpless as the first time. sunghoon stood there like he was hit by a truck with his usual cocky mask slipped up, exposing his startled face. you try to reach for the emergency button, but the pain in your chest made you scream out in pain immediately.
"please press it for me ,please!" you were sobbing at this point.
still standing like a lifeless statue, he finally gets out of his shocked state.
he squints his eyes to small slits.
"you said I should leave, so I'm leaving!" he huffs, taking his bag and without looking back he flees the room, leaving you hyperventilating and completely alone. every breath felt like swallowing sandpaper, each one getting more painful. why was this happening to you? why could everything not just stop? and why did sunghoons betrayal hurt this bad? it was not like you should’ve expected anything else. at this moment the realization that you were completely alone hit you more painful than ever. someone knocks at the door and for a swift moment you hope that sunghoon came back.
"oh, my! what happened to you dear?" a middle aged woman, presumably a nurse, rushes to your bed and checks your pulse. you feel a little prick on your arm and suddenly a wave of calmness overcomes you. "come on, calm down with me. breathe in…and out. follow my breath." you do as you're told, still shivering, until you're able to breathe at a normal pace again. "I gave you something to calm down." the nurse explains. "do you want me to help you change your clothes? you're completely drenched in sweat!".
"yeah, that would be nice please." you reply slightly ashamed of yourself, still out of breath like you just ran a marathon. "I am glad to help you, dear! oh, did the handsome young man get you these?" you follow her eyes to the bouquet of pink camellia that fell down to the ground during all of the commotion. you nod reluctantly. "ohh, how nice of him, and you're both so handsome oh my!" she squirms. "I'll put them in a vase for you!"
"you can throw them away or keep them" you reply, not interested one bit in looking at them any longer than needed.
she clicks her tongue in disapproval and gives you a reproving look. after the nurse left, you reminisced about the last minutes, still shaken up. your breathing went back to normal but you felt more helpless than ever. your heart felt like it was ripped open and stuffed with those ugly flowers sunghoon brought you to spite you even more. you didn't understand his intentions anymore, not in your craziest dreams you would've imagined he would visit you, or nightmares would be more accurate.
you could barely hold your eyes open from all the exhaustion and the last thing in your mind before you fall asleep are pink flowers and hair that looks like the moon.

They say Spring is the season of romantic flings, picnics along the river, cherry blossoms petals in the air and flowers decorating the park.
They even say Spring is the season of new beginnings, like flowers— fresh buds bloom, every living thing comes back to life and the once cold air becomes warmer and warmer. To others, it may sound idyllic. But to you, you absolutely hated Spring.
Every year when Spring comes, you wish it would just go by in a flash. Once March ends and the new month of April adorns your calendar your mood turns sour and you curse every little perk of Spring you come across.
You never thought you could hate something this much—nevertheless, a damn season of all things. But every year it comes by, you’re reminded of all the terrible things Spring (or April) has done to you.
This has been ongoing for almost three years now, to the point that you didn’t remember what you thought of Spring before you began your beef with the season. You thought that maybe it wasn’t the season that you’re having conflict with, but more so the month that Spring is associated with.
April, that’s right.
Along with Spring, you hated April which kind of goes hand in hand with Spring— so it makes sense that you wouldn’t enjoy the particular month. To weigh out your fonder memories in April to memories you wish to forget, the latter is a lot heavier. You think that April is your unlucky month, which is why you just want to sleep it away until May but you could never really do that can you? So you dread every single day, just hoping each day doesn’t add on to the amount of terrible things that happens to you in this very month.
And there is a reason for your immense hatred for those two in particular. It reminds you of Park Sunghoon, your ex boyfriend to be exact. The boy who ghosted you three years ago, in April, which so happens to be the season of Spring. It also happens to be the month that he confesses to you, which makes you fume even more because back then you always hoped for April to arrive so you could celebrate your years anniversaries with him, but now it just reminds you of your heartbreak.
It disgusts you that a mere ex boyfriend could have this much of an affect on you. And you thought that you would move on after the whole thing, but the fact that he left you without saying a word to you, frustrates you to the core. Three years is a long time, and he has not contacted you once. And all you wanted was a reason, some closure even, to your break up with him.
And in the same month, you find out from someone else that he received an offer in a different school in Seoul. Which baffles you because why couldn’t he tell you; his current girlfriend at the time? It wasn’t a shameful thing to pursue dreams in the capital city, and isn’t it normal to at least— consult your significant other?
Either way, you wish April never came. But you can’t always have what you wish for.

Jongseong is seven years old and making Valentine’s Day cards in his Arts & Crafts class when he notices his seatmate fill his card, that was really more glitter than paper with Sooah Sooah Sooah, one of the girls in his class. Infallibly curious, this is where he first learns what a crush is. Someone who you give beautiful Valentine’s Day cards to.
Jongseong is ten years old when he makes his first handmade Valentine’s Day card for someone. He works on it for a week, so determined to make the prettiest card that he uses his lunch money to purchase a set of new glitter pens, and goes from store to store to get the paper with the exact shade of pink in his mind.
Arts & Crafts classes taught him enough to keep his lines straight and his words legible, yet it is difficult because Jongseong keeps changing his mind on what he should write. He does not ask any of his friends because he doesn’t trust those boys to know anything about girls, besides he’d only get teased, and he’d rather pull his own teeth before asking his parents.
