You can call up the image of a person whenever you want. And you can animate that image, and give it a voice, with your creative energy.
Where does that creative impulse come from?
Do we choose our creative impulse? Most artists I know of would have a certain hesitance to believe that. When youâre really compelled to create something, thatâs exactly it: a compulsion. Youâre being animated towards a goal by something beyond yourself.
So to call the image of a lost one into your mind - the perfected essence of their being - and animate a conversation with that personâŠ
Youâre talking to angels in heaven. Youâre connecting with the disembodied essence of their being, through the miracle of imagination, and intuition.
Thatâs what I think is so radical about Rudolf Steinerâs ideas. Heâs saying that the spirit of a person, their spirit energy, imprints on our spirit body, and that it is very much our imagination that makes them real.
Yes, we are playing pretend. But all of human civilization is pretend. Our money is pretend. Our institutions are pretend. They only exist because we have an impression of their function and can play these games in tandem; but their virtual nature doesnât keep them from having tremendously transformative effects on the lives and perceptions of all of us.
Ghosts and memories are the same way.
Steiner is suggesting that our imagination IS our connection to spirit; that inspiration is a gift from spirit; that intuition is understanding from spirit. So, to sit here and call an image of my deceased grandmother into my mind, and have a conversation with her using my creativityâŠthatâs HER Iâm speaking to. Thatâs her spirit. Iâm having a real conversation with her and can gain real insights from her in this way.
Thatâs what subtle perception is all about, it seems. Unlearning all your self doubt to the point that you realize the tangible benefits of playing these different, heightened games. Allowing yourself to play the fool, and surrender to the potential your mind has for self-evolution.
At least, I think thatâs the idea.
My intuition tells me Iâm right. I get âthe senseâ that these things 'make senseâ.
My hesitation here is because I know how good my mind can be at convincing me of the truth of something false. Something that appeals to my feelings, something that Iâd LIKE to be true, is not necessarily true at all. The fear is in setting myself up for failure. Not just failure, but humiliation.
To understand the spirit with a skeptical mind; to understand the game, the effects of playing the game, while remaining aware that it IS a gameâŠitâs this cozy little middle ground where you donât become too attached to the crazy idea that grandma is still here in all her glory.
Itâs not 'herâ in the same way you used to think of her. She is not the moving, changing, growing being that she once was on Earth. It is an impression of her; a certain 'idealâ of her, of who and what she was to you in life. It is a memory, and even the memory itself will change, as your spirit grows and your mental hardware shifts and decays.
She is with you insofar as you work to make it so. She can talk to you insofar as you allow her to talk through you, your own creative intelligence. She remains on this Earth insofar as you allow your memories of her to influence your worldly actions. This is how we keep the spirit alive. The Day of the Dead festival is very much aligned with this idea.
Magic, channeling, reincarnationâŠthese are not fantasies. They are expressions of perspective.
This is the power of The Fool. The Fool, when asleep, is the most destructive being, as they bumble through the world completely unaware of their own foolishness.
But a Fool that stays mindful of their foolish nature becomes open to receiving all of the power thatâs available to them. Nothing is cut off from them because they do not cut it off with labels and ideas about 'how things areâ. All the ideas they have, they see through the lens of self-skepticism, the lens that allows them to grow and change in ways the unawakened cannot even comprehend.
Be The Fool. Play telephone. Talk to the dead. Dream.
