‘Thun’du Kunaa Viyun’ or Mat Veawing Thun’du Kunaa veawing is one of the most noteworthy traditional Maldivian craftsmanship. Primarily women are know to practice this slowly dying art in the islands. These mats were traditionally used for sleeping, seating or praying. Fine grass Kunaa from G.Dh.Gadhdhoo were presented as royal gifts in the past when they were given to the Dutch and British governors of Ceylon from the Sultan of Maldives. Mariyam Soabiraa of G.Dh.Gadhdhoo harvests and sources her materials locally from the near by island of Gan. These intricate patterns comes in four colours - natural, yellow, brown and black. she is among one of the few to use all local and natural materials to dye. The bark of ‘uni’ tree is sun dried and powdered to be used as a ground dye. Brown dyed grass is soaked in bed of uni leaves and boiled in a mixture of coconut oil and water. To prepare the yellow dye, pieces of root from the ‘ahi’ tree is boiled along with the dried grass for two hours. Powdered turmeric is then used to enhance the distinct yellow colour. Beaty and complexity of patterns dictate the value of a particular mat. ‘This wonderful art is in grave danger of fading into distance’ Mariyam explains. The main reason being, lack of passing down the craft to young artists. Traditionaly the skills are handed down to daughters from mothers. she remains hopeful that her daughters would be interested in carrying this proud art onto the next generation. #sunsetstaymv #maldives (at GDH.Gadhdhoo) https://www.instagram.com/p/BuHUv3mH3Ke/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=lfwtiveqqana

PLASTIC - The proliferation of plastic products in the last 70 years or so has been extraordinary; quite simply we cannot now live without them. We are now producing nearly 300 million tons of plastic every year, much of it is for single use. Since plastic began to be mass-produced, 9.1 billion tons have been produced. Dr. Roland Geyer and colleagues of the University of California, Santa Barbara estimates that only 9% of all the plastic we’ve ever created has been recycled. The study found that 12% had been incinerated, while a whopping 79% (or 6.3 billion tons of plastic) has either accidentally, carelessly, or purposefully been tossed in landfills and the natural environment. More than 8 million tons of plastic is dumped into our oceans every year. Travelling on ocean currents this plastic is now turning up in every corner of our planet. It is even being found trapped in Arctic ice. Single-use-plastic has been a huge burden to our environment. one very important question is “what are we going to do about it?”, as an individual, as a community.
