I saw a few people who said that Achilles doesn’t love Patroclus as much as Patroclus loves him. It made me quite mad, so here are some of my favorite proofs:

“Does it matter? I would not stop.” His voice was warm with desire.

“Name one hero who was happy.... You can’t.” “I can’t. “I know. They never let you be famous and happy.” He lifted an eyebrow. “I’ll tell you a secret.” “Tell me.” I loved it when he was like this. “I’m going to be the first.” He took my palm and held it to his. “Swear it.” “Why me?” “Because you’re the reason. Swear it.”

Patroclus. I have given enough to them. I will not give them this.

Throughout the book, Patroclus describes Achilles in so many poetic ways that I would love to be described as by my s/o at one point. Here are some of my favorites:

There was a vividness to him, even at rest, that made death and spirits seem foolish.

When he smiled, the skin at the corners of his eyes crinkled like a leaf held to flame.

As if he heard me, he smiled, and his face was like the sun.

His features are drawn with a firm hand; nothing awry or sloppy, nothing too large—all precise, cut with the sharpest of knives. And yet the effect itself is not sharp.

When he died, all things swift and beautiful and bright would be buried with him.

THIS SCENE!! I don’t see people talk about this scene so let me tell you why I love that scene so so much.

Before reading the book, I only knew Achilles from the Achilles’ heel story, so basically I knew nothing about him except for his death story. When I read the book I in fact also read the character’s glossory that the genious Madeline Miller added. She wrote this about Achilles’s character:

“In the Iliad and Odyssey Achilles isn’t invincible, just extraordinarily gifted in battle. But in the years after Homer, myths began popping up to explain and elaborate upon Achilles’ seeming invincibility.”

I read half of the book thinking Achilles WAS invincible everywhere except for the heel. When I found out that was in fact a later story, my whole perspective changed. Why? Because it made me realize that Achilles was a “normal” human being, extremely talented of course, but he was normal. And when I realized that, the whole story made sense to me all of a sudden - Patroclus and Achilles’s love story made MORE sense.

When you think about it, Achilles character fits very well into the whole “I don’t care about anyone else except for my lover” book trope. And Patroclus loved him more than anything or anyone else in the world. If we add this to the fact that Achilles wasn’t invincible, it only makes sense to me that what made him one is his love to Patroclus. Achilles did everything he could to protect Patroclus, and when he died, he wasn’t invincible anymore.

What does that mean? It means that Achilles had one vulnerable spot, and it wasn’t his heel. It was Patroclus. Patroclus is Achilles’ heel.

“What would you have done?” I asked. Achilles tapped a finger against the branch he sat on. “I don’t know. I can’t imagine it. The way the boy spoke to you.” He shrugged. “No one has ever tried to take something from me.” “Never?” I could not believe it. A life without such things seemed impossible. “Never.” He was silent a moment, thinking. “I don’t know,” he repeated, finally. “I think I would be angry.”

I don’t see a lot of people talking about THIS forshadowing, but it is way more heartbreaking to me than the “What has Hector ever done to me” one.

Achilles went from never having anything taken from him, never loosing anything, to loosing Patroclus, the man he loved more than anything in the world. So of course he reacted the way he did when Patroclus died. He said in that quote that he thinks he would be angry, but when Patroclus died, Achiles had to experince loss for the first time, and he did not know how to deal with those emotions - grieve, loss and anger combined.

And he WAS angry. Angry at everything - Angry at the prophecy for coming true, angry at Hector, obviously, for killing Patroclus, angry at his mother who wasn’t there for him when he needed her the most. But most of all, I think Achilles was angry at himself, for not protecting Patroclus the way he knew he could’ve (and should’ve).
