There’s a really terrific interpretation I saw about Hirose’s antics before the Hana reveal in episode 12 and I gotta talk about it.

So like, at the end of the school day when Nakamura has determined he lost his chance to give Hirose the chocolates he bought, he runs into him and Hirose asks him if he received any chocolates. Nakamura denies is, then there’s a pause in the conversation that Nakamura feels is significant, so he wait only to have Hirose dip at the end and run away without any change.

Someone’s fic had it where Hirose had noticed the chocolates in Nakamura’s bag, wanted to know if he had gotten them from anyone, got excited when Nakamura denied it, then was waiting to give Nakamura time to offer them to him but… when he didn’t, Hirose believed Nakamura was waiting to give them to someone else, and he ran away because he was actually upset they weren’t for him.

And I gotta say… that such a fucking smart interpretation! Like, yeah, if Hirose did see them and hoped they were for him all day, waited around for Nakamura, then didn’t get the chocolates even when they were alone and had ample time to be offered, it makes sense he would be embarrassed for getting his hopes up and run off.

I truly do think, if Nakamura had gone for it then, he would have had a chance even if Hirose would not have expected a full confession along with the chocolates. He might have reacted nervously or acted like he didn’t understand, but I think Hirose already had plenty of feelings building up for Nakamura. It was just a matter of time before those feelings would need some sort of outlet. Too bad for Nakamura, Hirose first tried to get them out by dating Hana.
