Transfers

Being a transfer student myself, I have experienced and understand the dilemmas and stress that come along with being in a new unfamiliar place. On top of trying to make new friends and staying ahead of school work, transfers have the disadvantage of not knowing the “hot” spots of their new town. Usually you’re surrounded by people who have already had the opportunity to experience all the town as to offer and already know the best activities to partake in. It may take a while to adjust, explore, and familiarize yourself with your surrounding environment but with this guide I offer transfer students a short-cut to discovering the town of New Paltz.

Student Organizations

Joining on campus organization is another great way to meet fellow student who may have the same interests as you. SUNY New Paltz offers its students a wide range of clubs, with over 100 clubs to choose from. Social, cultural, and sporting, and business clubs are amongst the many to choose from, with many others remaining for the people who are just looking to pick up a new hobby! Every semester New Paltz hold a club fair, in which each club sets up table and students are given the opportunity to walk around and talk to people from the clubs they might be interested in joining. I’m sure every transfer student can find at least one club or on campus organizations that interests them.

One of the most popular breakfast places is Main Street Bistro, conveniently located right on main street in New Paltz. Bistro is home of the infamous college breakfast; Two eggs any style, home fries, and toast, all for just $1.95 (or $2.95 if you take it to go). Of course, bistro serves many other delicious dishes and is open from 8am-4pm Monday-Friday and 7am-6pm Saturday and Sunday.

Bar Specials

Exploring the bar scene at New Paltz is another fun thing to do. With a variety of bars all located relativity close to one another, you can always find some where to go! Another helpful thing to know about the New Paltz bars is the bar specials, including happy hour for the different bars and other specials the bars may offer.

P&G’s

P&G’s (often referred to as “pigs”) has specials that change daily. Their happy hour is every Friday from 3pm-9pm and includes $2.50 mixed drinks and pitcher specials.  Some of their other daily specials include: $4.50 pitchers and $2.50 Sam Adam pints on Mondays $2.50 mixed drinks and draft beers on Tuesdays $2.50 pints of Blue Moon on Wednesdays And many others! http://www.pandgs.com/menus/nightlife.html

McGillicuddys

McGillicuddys, or “cuddys” actually does happy hour everyday from 3pm-7pm which include $5 boneless wings, sliders, pulled pork slammers, and potato boats and $1 off draft beers, mixed drinks, and glasses or wine.

Bacchus

Bacchus is another bar that have bar specials that change daily. They have over 400 different types of beer from all around the world and actually brew some of them themselves! On top of this they also have a billiard room that comes with specials of its own!

Billiard specials: 11am-4pm Monday-Friday $4 per person for the 1st hour $2 per person for the 2nd hour $1 per person for every hour after

Bar Specials: Happy Hour 3pm-7pm Monday-Thursday and includes 50 cents off mixed drinks, bottles, and select drafts. One of my favorite things to take advantage of as a SUNY New Paltz student is the many school trips they offer. Depending on the season these trips include, skiiing, snowboarding, snow tubing, horseback riding, zip lining, and many others, all offered at a discounted price. Some of these trips are only open for transfer students, which is a great way to meet students who are experiencing the same dilemmas that come along with transfering. These trips tend to fill up rather quick so make you sign up as soon as possible to secure your spot!

Probably the most common activity available here at New Paltz is the numerous amounts of hiking trails. The Lemon Squeeze trail, which loops around the Mohonk Mountain House, is a 4 mile hike, roundtrip, approximately 4 hours. Although one of the more difficult hikes here, it is definitely a hike worth taking!

One of the best parts about New Paltz is the landscape. Mountains, trees, open fields, and farms are everywhere you turn. One thing the Athletic Wellness Center, located on SUNY New Paltz campus, has to offer is the opportunity to rent a bike for the day. For only $5 you can take a leisure ride all around New Paltz and explore and discover the beautiful scenery.

The Water Street Market in New Paltz is located towards the bottom of Main Street. It consists of strips of shops that vary from antique shops, to candy stores, to art galleries, and many more. One of the most unique and exciting qualities the Water Street Market has to offer is their Monday Movie nights, that happen during the summer. A huge projection screen is set up and families, students, teachers, or any residents are all welcome to bring a blanket and lounge around as classic movies are shown, and the best part is it's absolutely free.
