My breeding challenge pair kicked out a single, solitary egg. I can only hope it’s a good one.
Well, I got a breed level up at least. No new genes, but I can work with this.
My breeding challenge pair kicked out a single, solitary egg. I can only hope it’s a good one.
Alright, got a breeding pair to start a lore challenge. At the first level, I think the challenge is going to be figuring out how they get to either my lair or the Tidepool Travelling Troupe and what role they occupy. From there on, it’ll be anyone’s guess. I’m gonna set myself the task of writing a full chapter/short story about each pair or something a little shorter about each individual. If you’re interested in reading along, I can create a pinglist. I will also probably make a thread onsite once I have a little more organization and idea about my rules and whatnot. Fern’s restlessness was back, but this time, she knew exactly why. It all started with an accident. One of the twins had a fling with the group’s new fireworks specialist. Nobody thought anything of it until Crossette laid her eggs in a corner of the sleeping caravan. To say that the crew was surprised would be an understatement, and no one was more surprised that Cascade. One minute he was a happy-go-lucky juggler and the next he was a soon-to-be father. The shock of his situation made him pass out. The troupe learned to adjust to this new normal of theirs and made sure to carefully pack blankets and pillows around the egg for travel. The caravan could be a pretty bumpy ride otherwise. Cascade had to learn to watch over a nest so they could still have their fireworks show in the evening, although Crossette was a diligent mother who rushed back to her eggs as soon as the show was done. All in all, this part of parenting was going smoother than expected. But Fern’s restlessness reared its ugly head again, and she knew she wanted children. She sat on this idea for as long as she possibly could, but the ache in her heart grew daily. Finally, she broached the subject with Copper. You want what now? Copper asked, thinking he must have misheard. I want to have children. A nest. Eggs. Children, Fern responded, slightly irritated by his disbelief. Fern, we’ve talked about children before. We said it would be irresponsible to have children in this environment, remember? I know, Fern replied. I remember. But my love, things have changed for me. I never thought I would want something the way I want this. I just can’t get it out of my head. Copper sighed mentally, but was otherwise silent. His face indicated that he was at least considering Fern’s words, so she remained silent as well. After several minutes, Copper looked up and met Fern’s eyes. All right, I have some conditions. First of all, we need to run this by the rest of the group. They will have to deal with it as well as we do, so that’s only fair. But what if they say no? Fern interjected, half angry and half resigned. Must my desires wait on the pleasure of everyone else? No, my love, let me finish. If they are against it, then we’ll wait until we can set ourselves up somewhere. We can start a family there. We should be owed a bit of money from the troupe if we do leave. We’ll figure out some way to get by after that. Copper paused here and kissed his mate lightly. I want you to be happy but I also want to make sure we have a home and a plan to keep our children safe. Fern felt tears pulling at her eyes. She had known Copper was a good egg, but this felt like nothing she had ever known before. He would sacrifice his happy life for her, sacrifice to build a new life together. Fern had not been so happy since the day they became mates. Feeling bolstered by the turn of the conversation, she asked, What are the other conditions? If we are to stay with the troupe, we wait until Crosette’s and Cascade’s hatchlings are not only out of their eggs, but also old enough to not require quite so much personal care. The last thing I want is to overwhelm the troupe with two sets of very young hatchlings running around at once. Fern thought about this a moment then nodded. That’s fair, she said. Any other conditions? Just one more. We are giving our children real names, Copper said firmly but warmly. Fern laughed aloud. Deal.
Hatched some interesting babies this morning. Leftmost is a boy, the other two are girls. If anyone is interested, make me an offer.
actually it’s ridiculous to me how much importance site-lore puts onto breed culture. how many players actually have a lair, or even one separate lore group, comprised of one breed of dragons? in fact, parts of the lore actually seem hostile to lairs with different breeds, like size difference in imperials and fae and the language barrier between coatls and other breeds. there’s so much “this breed does this and hates this breed” and so little “here’s how these breeds differ and work together”
I literally headcanon that fae and coatl developed crest-sign to bridge the language barrier. Bcus the site gives you so little you gotta come up with your own interspecies headcanons to solve their communication issues. 😑
The size issue is so egregious that I just normalize their sizes in my head. Like, faes are still tiny, but they are still large enough to interbreed with the other breeds and use the same facilities, utensils, tools, etc. as the other breeds. The site acts like we were never really meant to intermingle these characters and it’s just plain ridiculous.
My dragon count says I have two more dragons than I actually do. Bout to start headcanoning that my lair is haunted.
Decided I needed more female Banescales in my lair so I snagged the girl on the left off the AH. Probably gonna throw her on a nest soon with one of the juggling (identical) twins and get some lovely blue babies out of it. WOuld anyone be interested in lore babies from this pair?
Waiting for breeding cooldowns is agonizing sometimes.

Fern’s chance came sooner than she expected. Wayang cleared her and Copper’s break with Murasaki that very night, leaving the pair of them free the next day when they would otherwise be onstage.
Copper, can we talk? Fern asked nervously as they sat together in the sleeping caravan.
Always, Copper responded. Fern didn’t think she was imagining the hope in his tone. Hope for what, she wasn’t sure, but it gave her courage. We’ve been together for a long while now, she began.
Most of our lives, yes, Copper responded.
Fern sighed. Please just listen for a minute, okay?
Sorry, Copper said. He sounded a touch dejected now, but Fern pushed past it.
Anyway, we’ve been together for a good long while now, and we’ve been best friends. We’ve worked together and had each other’s backs. We’ve kept each other safe. It’s just that, well, I don’t think of you as a friend anymore. Copper’s face fell at this, so Fern hurried on. Don’t misunderstand me, I still care about and value you. It’s just that I think of you more as a, well, as a lover or a mate than just a friend.
Copper blinked at her blankly a few times as though attempting to process what she had just said. Please say something, Fern begged him. Anything. I love you, Copper finally managed. I think I’ve loved you for a long time, but I’ve been too worried about losing you to say anything. I love you, too, Fern replied. She leaned in and planted a gentle kiss on his cheek. Copper turned his head and kissed her more fully and deeply, wrapping her in his arms as he did so. Hours later, the rest of the troupe found the pair still in the sleeping caravan wrapped in each others’ arms, sound asleep. Fern had a huge smile on her face. “Should we wake them?” Mesmera asked her partners lovingly. “No, let them be,” Murasaki replied with equal maternal warmth. “I just hope this means our little Fern is back to normal. She has been so out of sorts and she deserves to be happy.”
The pair were left to their own devices for the evening while the rest of the troupe cleaned up and prepared dinner. They awoke just before dinner was served. They stood slowly and stretched, taking furtive glances at each other as they did so. They seemed both open and bashful toward each other, in the strange way that young lovers sometimes are. Are you happy, my love? Copper asked her just before they set off to the dining caravan. No, Fern replied. I’m ecstatic. Copper smiled as brightly as Fern had ever seen him smile before. He scooped Fern up in his arms and trundled off with her to dinner.

Fern’s nap was anything but restful. She spent all of it tossing and turning, thoughts churning in her mind. She wished she could just pinpoint the source of her distress, but nothing in particular came to mind.
Fern just didn’t understand it. She had a loving family, a caring friend and partner in crime, plentiful food, warm shelter, a way to make money. All of her needs seemed met, and yet she was not happy. What was she missing? She did not know, only that something in her life seemed amiss. Sighing, she gave up the pretense of sleep and went to find the others. They were cleaning up after the crowds and beginning to pack up for the evening. They would be in this area one more day before moving on to a new location. Without a word, Fern grabbed a broom and began to sweep up the day’s detritus. As she swept, Fern became aware of the occasional worried glances from the others. Copper wouldn’t have told anyone else, she was sure, so her face must be reflecting her mood. She looked up from her work to see Wayang staring at her. She forced a smile at her adoptive father and continued to sweep, even going so far as to whistle a little song to herself. This did not seem to convince Wayang, but Fern pushed on with her tableau. Perhaps if she acted hard enough, her mood would pass in earnest. Fern was so invested in trying to be happy that she didn’t notice she had stopped sweeping altogether. She was shaken from her reverie by a tap on her shoulder. It was Wayang, and he looked more worried than ever. “We need to talk,” he said simply. Fern followed Wayang back into the caravan where she had just tried and failed to nap. “What’s wrong?” Wayang asked abruptly but gently as soon as Fern shut the door behind herself.
“What do you mean?” Fern asked, but again, she failed to convince even herself that she was okay. For someone who performed on stage for a living, she was failing as an actress quite a lot today.
“Do you really think nobody has noticed you’re not yourself today?” Wayang asked. “We all know you’re not okay, but nobody knows why and Copper, if he does know, isn’t sharing.”
“He doesn’t know what’s wrong because I don’t know myself. Something is just off. I can’t focus, I can’t sleep, and I have no idea why.” “Is it the show? You know I never liked the idea of exploiting your gift like that. We could find something else for you and Copper to do.”
“It’s not the show. At least, I don’t think it is.” Fern went silent, contemplating. Was it the show? Was she upset that her secret gift was being turned into a circus act? She certainly hadn’t been as enthusiastic about the idea as Copper had been when he conceived of it. But she enjoyed being on the stage, with an audience hanging on her every word, her every expression. There was a thrill to it that she couldn’t resist. “No,” she repeated more firmly, “It’s not the show.” “It’s not Copper, is it?” Wayang asked. “Did he finally make his move? I thought you two were solid. I hope you let him down easy.” Fern was taken aback by this. “What…?” she started, then recovered herself. “What on Sornieth are you talking about?” “You and Copper, of course. Your relationship.” Wayang was confused. Wasn’t this common knowledge? Apparently nobody had bothered to tell Fern if it was.
“What relationship? We’re just friends,” Fern insisted.
“He’s in love with you, and up until this moment, I honestly thought you felt the same,” Wayang pressed. “Can you honestly sit here and tell me that you don’t?” Fern was shocked by Wayang’s words, but something warm in her chest began to take over. Copper in love with her? That couldn’t be, could it? And why did the thought make her so happy?
Wayang smiled. “I thought so.”
Fern’s face, which had lit up at the thought of Copper, quickly fell. “I’m getting tired of being so easy to read today. “Sorry,” Wayang offered. Fern nodded but said nothing. It was clear she was still ruffled, but Wayang pretended not to notice.
“What should I do? Should I talk to him about it?” Fern asked nervously.
“Well, waiting for him to say something hasn’t exactly gotten you two anywhere.” Wayang pointed out. “So yes, I would broach the subject with him if I were you.”
Fern sighed deeply. “Okay, I’ll try.” Wayang stared at her for a minute or two. “Are you sure that’s what’s bothering you?” “Well, no, not really,” Fern admitted. “But I feel better than I have all afternoon, so I might as well give it a shot. It’s all I’ve got to go on right now, isn’t it?” “I suppose so,” Wayang replied thoughtfully. “But why don’t you and Copper take some time off from the show just in case?” “A break would be nice. Copper and I discussed that earlier today.” “I’m glad. You seem like you could use it. I’ll settle it for you with Murasaki,” Wayang replied. “Thanks,” Fern responded warmly. She gave Wayang a tight hug, which he returned with delight. He was delighted to see Fern acting more herself. “Should I send Copper in here?” he asked her. “No, thank you. I’ll find time to have that conversation soon, though. I promise.” “Good,” Wayang responded. “Now let’s go help the others finish cleaning.”

Copper stood aside so Fern could pass and watched her go. He wished there was something he could do to make Fern feel better. She always had a way of cheering him up when he was ill or tired or worn down. Yet in her hour of need, he stood useless and ineffectual before her. It was frustrating for him, especially in light of his feelings for Fern. He suspected she shared his feelings, but he had never mentioned them to her. He never seemed to find the right time. He knew that if he confessed now, it would all end badly, but he wanted nothing more than to go to her and hold her and tell her how he loved her. He had a wild hope that his confession would somehow fix everything in an instant. He tried to tell himself to be realistic, but the heart is not always one to listen to reason. The battle within himself was beginning to exhaust him, and he lay down on the floor of the dressing tent for a nap of his own.

The show had been a mess. Fern shook herself as she hopped offstage and over to the dressing area. She had been distracted the whole way through from start to finish. The show was an easy enough routine. Her mind link with Copper meant he would send her whatever key word the volunteer had come up with and she would announce it in properly dramatic fashion. Simple. Yet she found herself unable to focus on the task at hand today. She couldn’t figure out why, but something else was demanding her attention.
Copper poked his head into the little tent. Are you all right? he asked her, concern etched on his features. Fern had never had problems with their show before. Fern sighed. I...I’m fine, she replied. Her words sounded utterly unconvincing in her own head. Copper continued to watch Fern, his worried expression deepening. You know you can talk to me if there’s anything bothering you. I know. I know. I just...I don’t even know what’s wrong, or if there’s anything wrong, for that matter. Maybe I just need a break for a few days or something. That can probably be arranged, you know. We could ask Murasaki to take a few days off if you’re not feeling yourself. Fern thought for a moment and then nodded. That might be nice. I don’t know if it’ll help, but it might be nice. Copper nodded at that. We’ll ask her later, maybe after dinner? That sounds like a plan. In the meantime, I think I’m going to go take a nap.
Do you want some company? Fern shook her head. No thanks. I think I’d rather be alone for awhile. Very well. You’ll call me if you need anything? Anything at all?
I will. Fern hopped off the dressing stool and to the tent’s entrance. She reached up and put a hand on Copper’s cheek. He leaned into the touch, but the worry on his face did not ease. I’m not okay right now. But I will be, Fern told him. Don’t worry.
