Samantha Payne’s startup Open Bionics allows anyone in the world to download and 3D print their own bionic limbs. 

Tilly was just 15 months old when she had to have her hand amputated after contracting meningitis septicaemia. Now, with a bionic arm from Open Bionics, Tilly can move all of her fingers and perform more complex movements. EMG sensors on her arm detect muscle movement, telling her bionic arm how quickly or firmly to squeeze its fingers.

Increasing numbers of people live a nomadic lifestyle. They change jobs more frequently than toothbrushes, they're not bound to a fixed house, and have organized their life to fit in a quickly changing world. To find a good way to create houses for this new lifestyle is an issue that many designer deal with. In Omaha, Nebraska, the exhibition venue KANEKO sets the stage for Truck-a-Tecture, an exhibit that showcases examples of the efforts to create comfortable and flexible architecture for modern urban nomads.

Food Co-ops in Gentrifying Areas Find They Aren’t to Every Taste

A group of local teenagers was abuzz over the price of a single candy bar at the new Bushwick Food Co-op: $3.10, plus tax.

Why so much, they asked, when a candy bar costs a dollar or less at the neighborhood bodega?

But this was no bodega candy: It was Equal Exchange fair-trade chocolate, sold alongside milk from grass-fed cows, pasture-raised chicken and produce from the Finger Lakes region.

Besides, explained the co-op’s general manager, Amanda Pitts, the bodega’s chocolate was produced using child and slave labor. “You can pay a little bit more, you can get a really high-quality bar and know that you’re not supporting slave-trading,” she said.
