''Theyâve got Dad.'' âłÂ Dean Winchester
Supernatural | S1 EP22: Devil's Trap
Fandom really misreads Dean Winchester, and /sorry not sorry/ but lot of it comes down to probably classism and aesthetic bias. People love to paint Dean as this emotionally repressed, hyper-masculine tough guy, because I mean, just LOOK at all that beer, flannel, and motor oil, am I right???
IMHO fanon seems to project more stoicism, repression, and even aggression onto him that what is often actually there, almost like they're assuming that masculinity from a rural/poor background = de facto emotionally stunted.
But what we see on our screens is that Dean is loudly emotional. He CONNECTS. He cries, begs, clings, says âI need you,â and breaks down in bathrooms and graveyards. (Aside// He even considers giving his newly disabled foster father a backrub to help with pain. Deep down, he is so fucking sweet!)
Heâs raw and expressive, constantly reaching out to the people he loves. In fact, more often than not, his family tells him to âshut it downâ because they're SO afraid of that emotionality getting him killed (SEE: Bobby's speech in season 7).
And I'm not saying that Dean never suppresses or represses, or that he never struggles with anger or never shuts down, or that he's never living up to the classic hero masculine archetype, because he so often IS with flying colors...
...but IMHO he is the most expressive and emotionally literate of TFW, with Jack as a pretty natural second.
Fanon turns him into a caricature because of his class signifiers; it's like it overrides what we see with our own eyes. :(
///
Meanwhile, Castiel fits the archetype of the emotionally restrained man way moreânot modern tryhard bruh-ha-ha masculinity, but the classic kind: think noir detectives, samurai, old-style Hollywood, lone frontier cowboys. Heâs the trench-coated loner who speaks in soft, loaded silences, who says more with a stare than a paragraph.
Cas is stoic hypermasculinityânot because heâs heartless, but because he doesnât know how to express that huge supernova-sized well of emotion that sits in his chest (Aside/// and yanno... feeling was punishable by death in Heaven).
AND that's not to say that Cas isn't sometimes emotional, or failing spectacularly and slipping into a his loser outsider dork nerd status, or expressing moments of astonishing gentleness...
It's just that fandom often flips their defaults in such a cartoonish way, calling Cas the soft, emotionally open one and Dean the hard-ass. Why? Because Deanâs coded as rural and working-class, and fandom has a long history of distrusting and aestheticizing that kind of masculinity without engaging with it honestly.
///
People love the look of Deanâs painâthe Impala, the leather jacket, the worn-out eyesâbut not the truth of it. They don't SEE him. They romanticize his trauma while ignoring how open he actually is. Dean isnât repressed. Heâs exposed. LIKE A RAW FUCKING LIVEWIRE NERVE.
Cas is the bottled-up one, the one who hides behind duty and silence. Dean begs to be chosen. He shows up, again and again, with his heart in his hands.
If you drop the fanon filters and actually watch whatâs onscreen, it becomes super clear: Dean is the most emotionally transparent of the trio.
Fandom just isnât always ready to admit that working-class vulnerability actually counts.
EDIT:
FIRST SPN CON REVIEW, Austin Texas
Update 8/27: I'm sick with COVID for attending this event lmfaooo. I sh*t you not I'm so sick rn I'm on five different meds to cope. Idk what strain was going around, but I bet the actors are sick too from the cesspool of germs it truly was.
Initial post, but slightly edited 8/27:
FIRST CON REVIEW? I'll update it after it's all over. So far though...
I'll preface this with the fact there's some pros: I loved getting to hear Jim Beaver, Alex, Sam Smith, Briana, Ruth, Kim, & Alaina. They were all amazing. Especially Misha... but.... ya'll. First con. I'll give my honest review. I loved getting to talk with Matt Cohen he is such a light, genuinely cares about people & his personality is so bright. I actually think the "smaller" part actors are what carry these conventions.
I still think it is way overpriced & a money grab even after writing this a couple of days later getting home. The paid events are worth it, I got Copper seating. You get to see Jensen/Jared once on stage for about an hour on the last day Sunday. There's a decent amount of free stuff, but you get FOMO from missing out on the other levels like silver & gold because they get to see more panels, get autographs included in the initial cost & a bit more out of it. However, Copper is still excellent because I'd never pay $1k+ upwards for this kind of event.
But.... everybody smelt like BO, maybe it's the summer. Okay.. maybe not like everyone everyone, but the majority. It was honestly disgusting how POTENT this smell was the second day in the vendor room with poor ventilation. It also smelt like wet carpet & when I attended Misha's comedy event (which is held in the smelly vendor room later around 8pm in the back with curtains while you can hear them emptying out the trashcans & cleaning) also the event was $80 but I love Misha so much, it was worth it. Learned a lot about him, but execution wasn't too too bad just needed a better room honestly. I had to keep my legs up in my chair during this event because something in the carpet of the vendor room was jumping up onto my legs making me itch. The smell is so bad during the day I wanred to kinda vomit. This isn't even an exaduration like it was honestly so gross but the days it didn't smell bad was okay.
Karaoke was a good time, I love DJ Qualls. He got out into the crowd a couple of times on the floor with you. He is respectful, funny, a light, I just love him. Definitely go to karaoke that was actually a banger but song choices could have been better!! But still sooo fun!!! It is included with Copper.
I want to say that the vendors truly sucked. Mass bought "art" from Alibaba/Aliexpress & overseas. Some were selling Al art?? Then some were selling random anime stuff no one knew what it even was. And one vendor had moldy dirt in a jar they were selling as graveyard dirt. Just overall, poopy graphic t shirts & nothing I'd want. Creation Entertainment needs to hire real graphic artists who know how to make GOOD products people want to buy. It was just straight trashy sh*t in my opinion.
I luckily got to meet Kim. ($25 for me, $25 for friend so it was $50mtotak includes 2 people). I recommend her. The interaction was 6 seconds I kid you not. Such a great woman & so sweet, her hugs are so nice. She's bubbly, warm, & appreciates you!! But I cannot tell you how many creepy weirdos I met that talk about how they want to kiss Jensen & Jared, & had them do weird creepy poses for photo ops. They're married men. You're in love with the characters. Don't be weird... like I'm sorry it's just nasty. Stop making them do really creepy poses for your weird fantasies. They're PEOPLE. Holy crap. Like honestly I just feel so bad for them I truly do when you look at the reality of the kind of people showing up to these cons. I hate to say it, but please stop being creepy & weird to them.
No filtering questions on Alex, Sam's, Jim's or the ladies panels Sat/Sunday on what questions to be asked. "Filtering" is the volunteers at both sides asking you what your question is just to see if it is appropriate not if it is dumb or has been asked 6+ times. Creation Entertainment allows MINORS, 9-12 year olds up to ask dumb fking questions during panel time. This should be a 18+ event. One girl asked the same question 4 times "would you rather have a third eye or a third limb... xyz". So you basically paid for panels that are an absolute joke (I feel so bad for Alex & his panel Saturday/Sunday (can't remember, it was awful bless his heart)). The audience was so frustrated, & so were the actors. At one point Jim Beaver said THREE times "you got in line to ask me that question...?" One girl asked 5+ times throughout the weekend "If you could be a bird, what bird would you be" wasting everyone's time. It's just baffling to me the mass DUMB questions that took up valuable panel time. I was just pissed, I'm sorry. These actors want to add value & they shouldn't have to answer questions like these. Paid $500 just to be there. Give them a list of questions to ask PLEASE & screen how old you have to be to ask. Like get these questions lined up prior to the event. Luckily, they filtered better for the questions with Misha & Jared & Jensen, but wow. Why are you doing the cast dirty like this?
They allowed literal furries to come up & ask questions too, like why are you dressed up in a big fursuit in the middle of the summer at a Supernatural con then removing your fursuit head & sweating alllll over the mic (I'm gonna actually b sick)??? Like they're trying to get a rise out of the actors. The actors were so uncomfortable during these weird questions etc., I feel so bad for them like I have stated multiple times.
When Mark go up to speak I appreciated him. He levels himself on the floor while speaking to you, he values real human interaction & doesn't appreciate being filmed while he gets to interact with you. I loved his panel, very funny, but be prepared to be torn to shreds for asking dumb questions (he was honestly the most honest one at how these frustrated him). Overall, he's a great guy who wants to talk to his audience.
I hate to even sound hateful but genuinely the Austin event was so disorganized & the overall experience you'd have better sitting on your living room couch watching older panels. The staff were incredibly RUDE & half the time did not know the answer to your question (what are they there for???). They didn't want to help, were all snarky, & very put out. They don't want to help you (Car lady for pics was nice, I liked her a lot & was the only employee who loved to help & answer questions) but rarely any of the staff actually want to help you. They aren't paid to care. Creation Entertainment why aren't you hiring people who can truly help?? Why are you relying on volunteers...?? Is it because you've learned you can use people for your further profit?
These events could have so much more potential, but I see barely any effort being made for the amount you have to spend. I cannot believe some people pay 2k to sit up closer in the theater when you have the same view in the back not too far away for $400. Maybe it's to take better photos for their fan accounts, sure, but there's a big sign that says not to post or take pictures during this event. Why isn't this regulation being followed? Everyone is posting it all anyways!!!

Anyone else tonight go to Misha's therapy session at the Austin, TX 2025 convention? IYKYK. I actually almost cried twice hearing his life story... But somehow he's able to laugh through it all.. I really am shocked. There was one point his eyes were teary. I understand him so much better, especially surrounding the way he gives back to people. Had such an amazing time. The man has so much depth. Hearing him talk about his life made me grasp a better understanding of how he relates to being Castiel. Just wow. He told us not to really share what was discussed, so out of respect I won't share details, but I really do admire him for being such a strong father despite everything he's gone through.

Free my man he did all of it but idc
I love Supernatural because I won't watch it for like a good 6 months & for some reason there's something about the show where you just like.... forget everything. You watch it again & it's a literal fever dream & you're like DAMN THIS IS SO GOOD. & it happens all the time & you're like wow I just love these boys. They're your family. You feel safe. You laugh, you cry, you feel at home.
I'm gonna need someone to give me a heterosexual explanation regarding 5.14, "My Bloody Valentine". Castiel my beloved, care to explain why, when you were explaining to the Winchesters what the whole deal is with Famine the Horseman
you had no issue telling Sam that people can be hungry for food, drugs, sex
but then you stared deep into Dean's green orbs as you said "love"?
CARE TO EXPLAIN, CASTIEL THE HAMBURGLAR MY BELOVED?
i think my favourite trope in fics is cas burning out lightbulbs whenever heâs overwhelmed or flustered.
like dean doesnât do it on purpose. and nothing goes on with casâ face whenever he gets like that. but the fact that cas, an angel of the lord, cant control his grace, something thats fundamentally been a part of him for billions of years, because dean stretched out his back until his shirt raised enough to show skin. like yeah?? me too dude???
the funniest thing about dean and cas gotta be that dean collected castiel's ashes, spread them lovingly in a meadow by an old windmill, because it was "a real calm, zen sort of place" and dean believed cas would love it. while cas gripped dean tight and raised him from hell and then... left him in his grave and made dean dig his way out--
Are these guys even real? Ugh, my heart. (,: love them so much!!!
do I think that Dean Winchester knows he's bisexual? No. Do I think he knows he wants to fuck Cas? Absolutely.
Peanut Butter Bunker â 4.17.2025 â By Hayden K.
Waking up Castiel felt like it'd be a crime after all that he'd endured the past couple of days. He contemplated making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in the kitchen instead while he slept a little longer. It was fast, easy, and Dean knew they were Castiel's favorite.
Ten minutes later he quietly came back to his room in the bunker, with the sandwiches in hand and a couple of blankets and a cot. Juggling the items, he set them down on the floor and the plate on the bed.
Dean sat on the edge, his hand moving to Castiel's shoulder in a rhythmic rock to wake him up. He didn't mind leaving his fingers lingering softly over his shoulders.
"Cas." He whispered softly.
Castiel stirred from his sleep, groaning, the line between rest and wakefulness blurring as he slowly came to awareness. His eyes fluttered open to find Dean sitting beside him.
âDean?â Castielâs voice was soft, roughened slightly by sleep, as he oriented himself. He shifted slightly, noticing the plate of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches... he blinked at the sight. That had been his favorite meal as a human a couple of years ago. Castiel pushed himself up gently from the bed to Dean's level, meeting his gaze.
âYou made my favorite sandwiches? Dean. You know I don't need to eat now.â Castiel's movements were cautious to not disturb his healing wounds as his hand reached for a triangle on the plate.
âI was feeling snackishâ A smile tugged at Dean's lips ever so gently as his eyes met Castiel's in a gentle soft gaze. âAnd, I know. But you can still enjoy them.â
âI appreciate it.â
As he ate, molecules and all, Castiel watched Dean arrange the cot and blankets. There was a quiet efficiency to his movements that gave him familiar reassurance. âYou don't have to stay with me. I'll be fine, Dean. I just need time to heal. Doesn't come as easy like it used to be.â he said after a moment, his tone imbued with concern for Dean more than himself.
By now the cot was setup on the floor for Dean. âBut I know something you don't, I can take care of you the old fashioned way. Bandages & booze.â He'd grabbed a sandwich off of the plate for himself.
âAnd maybe actual medication... like the whole bottle.â Dean gave him a laugh before he made himself comfortable on the floor with his sandwich.
âI'm here when you need me.â
