Another little practice with my version of Hetalia Mongolia.
I’m still obsessed with this idea that she always seems to have half of her face buried in shadow. I’ve written that image into my fanfiction about her several times, and I wanted to see if I could finally show it through drawing.
The contrast here is basically this:
When she is talking to someone familiar, she looks like a normal woman. Maybe a little sharp, maybe a little sly, but still very much human.
Then her attention shifts. She notices a stranger. She becomes alert.
And suddenly, to that stranger, she looks terrifying.
That terror comes partly from her, and partly from the impression she has left in other people’s minds. She is frightening because people already carry stories about her before she even speaks.
So this is my attempt to draw that idea: the woman herself, and the shadow people see around her.
Also, I think I am very slowly starting to understand how to present a concept or a small piece of narrative through drawing. Very slowly. After drawing as a hobby for over ten years.
Groundbreaking discovery: apparently drawings can also tell stories.
Better late than never, I guess.
