idk you but i appreciate your opinion on Kokichi. it’s possible to enjoy that he’s a good character without twisting him into being a good, flawless person. he may have hated the killing game but he still did some fucked-up stuff on his way to try to end it; you can’t ignore that.

Thanks! I don't have much to say, but I really appreciate how you phrased this. Sometimes you do fucked up stuff for the sake of goodness- is that justified? I don't know these days. But it's interesting to explore, and I'm sure that draws a lot of people to the character.

I really enjoyed finding your post about how the fandom treats characters they think are gay. They obsess over that one trait and basically end up reducing characters like that to nothing but gay. It's pretty damn annoying and I wish these people could appreciate the character's personality, not something as trivial as if they're gay... and what's sad is that this isn't even limited to Ouma. This is seen in other fandoms as well.

Honestly this is really true, but I think it's just kinda how fandom is. I'm glad it's queer! I'm glad characters can be gay in fandom in a way that canon may never allow.

My only real problem with it is still this insistence that a character has to be a monosexual gay person and any other interpretations get treated as less valid or possible. For example, I got accused of homophobia on this blog a lot- more than anyone looking right now can see. Though some of my phrasing of things was imperfect, I know for a fact that the main reason for this was because I preferred to interpret the character as bisexual.

Funnily enough, I've since found out that I've been a fictive/introject of Kokichi Oma this whole time. I'm bisexual. I'm also married to a woman and have some traumatic history with oumasai/saiouma, so you can imagine how I took things a little personally.

Hi! I just read through your blog and I am surprised to see people actually think Kokichi Ouma is a pure child. Like??? Are we seeing the same character? Do you know something about Kokichi that I don't??? Now, don't get me wrong, I love Kokichi to bits because of how complex and intense his character is. But it's just like whaaaaat? Literally "pure" wouldn't even show up on the list of things I see Kokichi as. I am so confused.

Turns out, I am part of a system as a Kokichi Oma fictive/introject, so that's a big reason why certain parts of the fandom really irritated me. I have memories that I shouldn't- of the killing game, of D.I.C.E., and of a world where I went to Hope's Peak. In all of them, I did awful things to people I considered my friends. I felt justified in my guilt and self-hatred, and I lashed out at fans who "dismissed" or "justified" my awful actions.

In truth, they are simply regular people in fandom minding their own business.

I just want to say all this because ultimately, it doesn't matter that much. Kokichi Oma fans are fans of the character from the Spike Chunsoft game, not me, and what other people do really doesn't matter at the end of the day.

see my other asks about this basically. Tenko shows attraction to men in her love hotel scene. Everyone sees a fantastical version of Saihara in the love hotel scene. Etc etc.

I no longer agree with my phrasing of my big post about this, I do think it was too vicious at fans minding their own business.

I am now aware that I am an alter/introject of Kokichi Oma and a lot of my feelings were from that bias that I failed to recognize years ago. I'm bisexual. I'm also married to a woman. I have a lot of complicated feelings and, frankly, trauma, specifically surrounding oumasai & saiouma content. I shouldn't have taken it out on the fandom.

That said, if you want people to change or see your side of things, you shouldn't send asks like this. Instead of inducing any productive growth, it almost sounds like you'd prefer that I was homophobic for disliking gay!Kokichi Oma, lmao!

Yeah, and people are allowed to headcanon him as gay obviously.

It’s just that he’s not canonly anything and forcing that headcanon on the whole fandom does no good. It doesn’t make there suddenly be more representation and tbh EVEN IF Oma canonically had a crush on a guy* he wouldn’t be automatically gay because bi and pan people exist.

*I’ve seen his love hotel scene. Everyone sees a fantastical version of Saihara. Oma’s fantasy may involve a detective, but despite Saihara’s inner monologue, Oma’s version of Saihara is just as disconnected from him as, say, Kirumi Tojo’s.

I hc Kokichi as gay, but I agree with you on aggressive 'gay-hc'ers. I don't focus heavily on the sexuality itself, but more on *who* Kokichi seems to have feelings for in canon (which, to me, looks to be Shuichi way more than anyone else; sorry if you disagree ;w;). No matter who said loved one is, it can still point to a number of potential sexualities; even abrosexuality is a possible answer. People shouldn't shun others over differing hcs, especially on the *all-encompassing pride month* ;w;

Agree agree agree!! I do hc Oma as having feelings for Saihara, I just don’t like that narrative being forced on everyone as I think it is also open to interpretation.

Really, my big opinion on the matter is still that (1) if you headcanon a character as gay, changing their personality for that headcanon in particular is uncomfortable (2) Kokichi Oma is bad “representation” in that he’s not a good person and (3) you shouldn’t force a sexuality onto a character and say it’s canon if it isn’t explicit, especially in a series that has more explicit representation.

I can understand that in some instances these points may not apply, but the way the current fandom treats Oma’s “““gayness””” is very bizarre imo. Anyway, this isn’t a big issue for me anymore. I’m not here to change the fandom, I initially just wanted to reach out to see if any fans felt similarly uncomfortable.
