“ weirder things have happened,” she answered with a frown. there had been a few cadets that had been recruited from the middle of nowhere solely because they had found the prescott servers and hacked into them. while the recruitment of those cadets had paid off, there was never a guarantee that the person on the other side could be trusted. “ some risks shouldn’t be taken. ” but as soon as the words left her mouth, beverly couldn’t help but feel like a hypocrite. “ and what is this immaculate plan of yours? ”

“ maybe to you they shouldn’t be taken, but i’m gonna take them. what do i have to lose ? ” she asked rhetorically. in actuality, adelaide knew she had a lot to lose. it was either going to the academy or going to prison, and obviously she chose the academy. if she were to get expelled it would nullify the deal she made, and she would be sent on the next bus straight to jail. “ if i tell you my plan are you gonna try and discourage me from going through with it, ‘cause if so i’d rather just keep it to myself. ”

it wasn’t any news that adelaide’s strengths did not lie in hand to hand combat. while she wasn’t the worst, she definitely wasn’t the best either and she knew it. growing up, adelaide excelled in almost everything and the fact that she was not excelling in this bothered her. her plan was to go to the gym and work on strength-training but was surprised to see someone else in there. “ we could if you want, but just letting you know i’m not the best sparring partner. ”

“ see, i knew i made the right decision coming to you, ” her mouth curved into a smile, “ but if you ever feel like you wanna stop, tell me. i don’t want you to feel like you’re obligated to do this. ” adelaide pulled out a chair for herself, and sat beside her comrade. “ hm, i think i’m gonna stay. i wanna see exactly how you do it. ”

allowing a small smile to debut its appearance on her face, she shook her head as adelaide continued the joke. “ you say that now but you never know who’s watching. plus, at least one person will know you’re attempting to do this. ” it wasn’t like anyone was going to go digging for embarrassing videos of the cadet and she doubted anyone would go through old footage unless necessary. “ no, it makes it a reckless one. ”

“ do you think someone is watching a random mall in the middle of romania ? it’s possible but unlikely, and i’m all for taking risks, ” she assured. while the likelihood of anyone was finding this video was low, the possibility was still there and that was enough for adelaide to take matters into her own hands. “ it’s not reckless if i plan exactly how i’m gonna execute this. my plan is immaculate. ”

Lucas pulled up his pre-made programs, which would try to brute force getting into the file while he working on it more efficiently. “OKAY.” Squinting at the file, it was very well encrypted – whoever coded it knew what they were doing. He looked at if there was ways to backdoor the entire program, but it seemed airtight – so, he decided to just break down each wall one by one. “WHY CAN’T YOU DO THIS YOURSELF? SEEMS LIKE THE TYPICAL THINGS WE TAKE CARE OF.”

adelaide peered over his shoulder as he tried to get into the file. a sense of satisfaction washed over her as it appeared that he was having a little trouble to do the task she assigned to him, validating to herself that she did something right when encrypting the data. “ i was having a little trouble doing it, and i know that you’re good at this type of thing so i decided to come to you, ” she lied, not wanting to tell him she was the one who coded it yet, “ i’m sorry if i’m being a bother, i’m sure you have more important things to do. ”

“ i think you’re starting to imagine things. ” she teased with her usual deadpan expression. “ you never know what crumb you’ll leave behind to trace it back to you. and considering the events of the north american unit, i’d say it would be safer to leave it. for now at least. ” it was a suggestion for compromise, one that she wasn’t too sure adelaide would take the bait for but she figured there was no harm in trying to hinder the female. “ okay, point taken there. that still doesn’t mean i think it’s a good idea. ”

“ imagining ? don’t think i’ve ever done that before, ” joking around, she squinted her eyes in fake confusion. “ i’m not a beginner, i’ll be in and out of there and no one would ever even know, ” she argued, building her case as to why she should go through with it. she wasn’t going to back down until beverly at least semi-agreed with her decision. “ it doesn’t make it a good idea, it makes it a great one. ”

she had been working on encrypting this file for a few weeks now and the only way to test if it was secure enough was to ask someone else to try and get into it. adelaide waited in anticipation as she watched lucas decide whether or not to help her. “ really ? yay ! ” her eyes gleamed, “ okay, this is super simple i’m sure you’re gonna have no problem doing it. i just need to see if you can decrypt this data and get into the file. easy enough ? ”

“ no matter how hard i try i can’t recall what made me do it in the first place, ” her face scrunched in thought, “ i guess my brain suppressed it or something, but i know it had to be something dumb ‘cause if it was something significant i would probably remember it ... right ? ” regardless of what beverly said, adelaide would have hacked into the security systems anyways. “ that sounds like you’re encouraging me to do it. thanks ! i knew i could always count on you. ” while she wasn’t looking for beverly’s approval, her not outrightly disapproving was a go-ahead in her mind.

“ you’re a fucking liar, you know, but if you say so, ” she rolled her eyes, “ aw, i really thought i finally rubbed off on you. a girl can only hope. ” adelaide always was very competitive, no matter what she did she always tried to prove she was the best or close to it. the environment of the academy just fed into that part of her. “ no, why would it ? it’s just another group of people for me to prove i’m better than.”

it’s an excuse he feels like he’s heard a thousand times before. complaints are nothing new, unfortunately. hand-to-hand training, when personalized, tends to be a tough thing for cadets to learn from. differentiating between downright bloodshed and the art of it can be harder. it’s not a language everyone can speak. oliver’s brow furrows. ‘ you realize if you’re caught in the field and something goes wrong, they’re not gonna take it easy on you? ’ he’s been in that very situation before. more than once, even. he steps in close, carefully places his hands on her shoulders to push them back further and adjust her posture.

“ well by the end of this i’m going to be so battered that there will be no future for me in the field, ” she exaggerated. she knew that these skills were vital for any spy and that he was just trying to do his job, but adelaide had a flair for the dramatic. cadets like her probably made his day more aggravating, but she’s never been good with people telling her what to do. once again, she let out a loud sigh and got into the proper stance, “ what even is the point of this, it isn’t the 1300s anymore, wouldn’t a gun be enough to defend myself ? ”
