Well at least she hadn’t come looking for him specifically, there was a small weight lifted from him when it seemed like she wasn’t there with pitchforks. “I haven’t been doing anything of the sort. You will find that I’ve spent all day working here, talking to literally no one. If your interns are incapable of working it has nothing to do with me.” He knew exactly what she had meant by her words but James was going to try his best to avoid having to discuss the topic head on for as long as he could. “As far as I’m aware I’m still employed at this company.” Her words were a big fear for James. In a company who worked mainly on behalf of clients if this were to get out of hand he could see his work starting to shrink and the company as a whole start to see his presence as a deficit rather than an asset. In his application he had included his criminal record, it was a requirement to do so, so technically they would be aware already. “I am not worried about that, if they were to fire everyone around here when someone started gossip we would have no staff left. They already know more about what has happened than any of you so, like I said, I’m not worried. Now - what can I do for you?”
although jane wouldn't usually allow someone to talk bad on her interns, even if it was true, she could sense that he was understandably on the defensive. “you’ve disturbed the little peace we had going for us here. not intentionally, I hope, but you have.” she reasoned, debating whether to engage more just to see his reaction. she doubted he was half the monster the gossip was making him out to be and also not even the worst of them here. “there’s a difference between gossip and people fearing for their safety, don’t you think? not that I care. if you were actually a danger to society you would have killed someone here already. there’s a lot of useless people here that could be disposed of.” jane sighed, glancing at the time on her phone. "you're either very brave for not caring or a very good liar. either way, the best way to look at this is that if you survive this-- socially, you can survive anything. maybe next time invest in some NDAs as well."
