âOh, gosh, does he?â Dacey asked, tone concerned but hands fumbling in his pocket for a second, and third, cigar. He lit them off of the first, and set them on the edge of an expensive-looking - but gaudy; that was the problem with new money - porcelain bowl. âYou have to let them breathe. Like wineâŠOr the women Iâm sure Grady has chained in his cellar.â
âListen, Cece,â he leaned in, blowing smoke deliberately into her pale face, âwe need to speak about Tea. You know fatherâs threatening to send her awayâŠsomewhere?â He didnât elaborate. He didnât need to. Their father had been threatening to send ThĂ©rĂšse to an institution for years, and heâd gone into more detail than either of them had ever needed; screaming about shock therapy, and sedatives, and surgeriesâŠ.He shuddered. âYou know sheâs not mad. Not reallyâŠ.Or not in that way, anyway. âI mean, out of the three of us, sheâs the sane one.â
âHeâs always threatening to send someone away,â she rolled her eyes, hand waving the smoke away. Typically it was all talk - or shouts - not counting the fact that Dacey had been regularly sent away to one or another all-boys boarding school. Still, she didnât appreciate her brother speaking these things into existence. She grabbed one of the cigars heâd lit, chewed on the end of it with a wrinkled nose. âMother wouldnât allow it.â It was almost a joke. Their mother was a stagnant frame on their fatherâs wall. All for show.
She was prone to evasiveness, avoidance. When it came to her sister though, the true maternal influence in her life, she felt a flare of protectiveness. She looked to her brother, who always had an answer. âWhat do we do?â
@basicbitchwrites
âOh, you know,â Lux shrugged a shoulder under her fur coat, âI receive so many gifts from so many admirers. Itâs impossible to know.â She rearranged the strands carefully, setting them just so along her collar so that the lowest, heaviest string hung low and disappeared under the neckline of her dress. âYouâre right,â she agreed absently, speaking to him through the mirror as she fussed with perfume and a final coat of powder, âfor once. Theyâre hideous. âNobodyâs looking at my neck though, are they?â
âThey were a present from the German investor. Leoâs friend.â She paused fixing her mascara to roll her eyes, âif there is such a thing. Anyway, heâs going to be there tonight.â After giving her reflection a final critical once over - sheâd do, she supposed. Did it matter? - her gaze slid to Dominicâs, doing the same to him. âYou look like shit, too. Workâs really got you busy, huh?âŠDo you want some concealer for those dark circles?â
âI do not,â he elbowed her out of the way - daresay, playfully - so he could better examine his reflection. âExhaustion becomes me.â It was a reach. He finally looked his age, at least. He straightened his tie, eyes flickering towards his wife. âThe German -- he gives you jewelry? Invite him to cut a better check.â The tone was light, joking. Put on. He didnât smile.
He pushed away from the vanity and went about tracking down his Rolex. âWho else will be there tonight?â God forbid Dacey, the night was bad enough as it is. Hopefully none of the kids would deign themselves either. Dom was hoping it would just be a room of people whose first names were their nationality and last names were their worth. German Investor. French Magnate. âAnyone I actually know?â
Philosophize with him.
[ lit ] your muse lighting a cigarette , spliff , etc. for mine .
    âGrady despises you smoking inside,â Cecile chides, but creates a flame all the same. A smile pinches her cheeks. Small rebellions are her bread and butter. Still, she scrunches her nose at the cigar, waves the smoke dramatically. âIâm fine with it. The sooner you expire from cancer, the better off Iâll be.â
[ jewelry ] your muse clasping a piece of jewelry for mine , such as a necklace , or earrings .
    The pearls are tightened around Luxâs neck, making it out like heâs going to strangle her with them. Sheâd like that, probably. The necklace is clasped without a casualty. âThose are hideous,â he decides, watching her reflection in the mirror. Maybe if he starts a fight they wonât have to go out. âWho gave them to you?â
@supsets
  âSee, you say you need someone around for a shoulder during your parents whole meltdownâŠ,â Delphine leaves a chiding smirk on her lips, but she allows it. Comforting the Stillsâ children has become an accepted part-time job this week. âYou wanna drink about it?â
   âprudence is the only one milking that cow, we all saw it coming. itâs just like ripping off a band aid,â mick shrugs, but lest delphine get the assumption that he isnât in need of comfort, he slumps his gangly frame into her lap. âââ but iâm devastated, and i need you to console me with lots of liquor.â he buries his face in her lap before reluctantly pulling himself up to properly gauge her response. âdo i want to mope over the weird decisions my parents make? not in the slightest. do i want to drink with you and enjoy myself? yes, please.â
   Itâs borderline uncomfortable how closely Mick resembles her feelings about her own parents volatile dynamic, or at least the face she put on in front of her ego. With a ruffle of his hair and a curt nod, she concurs. âIâll make some starter glasses. Then we can go drink our way through the city.â But thereâs a pause, a hesitance. She offers his a sidelong glance, half smirking, but partly serious, curious. âYou sure though? Like, itâs okay if you give one, little shit. I wonât tell. Anyway, itâd be-- normal.â

  Itâs the third time Dominic asks Daisy to redo his black Armani tie. Thereâs always an excuse, but the implication is clear. âWhat if we just make a spontaneous trip to California?â He really, really doesnât want to go to his fatherâs bogus charity event. Heâd rather be alive in the west coast than drunk in New York, itâs that bad.
  âand you think this is a walk in the park for me? iâve walked right into emmy thorneâs den, and the peculiar friendship sheâs struck with lux doesnât make things any easier.â daisyâs hardly innocent, purposely leaving dominicâs tie slightly askew each time to provoke another attempt. she had an awful case of nerves jumbled in her stomach, and the offer to bounce off to a happier land is tempting. but daisyâs always been loyal, probably to a fault, and familial duties extended as much to herself as they did to herââ potential boyfriend. âitâs just a few hours of forced smiles, convincing yourself itâs for a good cause, and then we can do whatever we want.â hoping to ease his mind a little, she pulls at his tie and gives a cheeky, inviting smirk. âand iâve got my place to myself tonight, so i mean whatever we want.â
   Dominicâs all pursed lips and stubbornness, looking clear over her head and into the mirror. Heâs not sure why he agreed to go in the first place. Probably because he wasnât asked, he was told. Dom is like an accessory to Grady. Heâs good for business. âItâs not for a good cause. I mean, itâs a charity event, but the âcharityâ bit is used very loosely.â Grady wouldnât know generosity if it came up and stabbed him. But Dom is resigned to play his part. At least he can hide behind Daisy, whoâs personable enough for the both of them. He looks down at her, brow arched wickedly. âOh? You have big ideas?â

  âI am patient. Iâm the reigning queen of calm, composed resignation!â Velouriaâs pacing, gesturing wildly. âYou donât know my mother,â the only way she knows how to explain Bambi is to simply stick her glowing phone under Ingridâs nose, so she could get a load of the latest backhanded text. âShe makes nuns swear. Seriously, you should see her at Mass!â
   âwell, my father falls from the same twisted family tree as your mother, so i think i have some idea of how she can be.â at the very least, ingridâs having a blast seeing velouria come a little undone  â  normally the most straitlaced resident of the apartment, though thatâs hardly saying much, velouriaâs mild freak out is a welcome sight but ingrid steps forward to pluck the phone from her hands. âi mean, this text is mostly insulting to duffy and lucas, so thatâs one upside, isnât it? look, maybe she just needs to get to know them a bit better.â ingrid certainly found it ironic that despite the fact vee isnât the one who had a shotgun wedding straight out of high school, sheâs still considered the black sheep. âinvite us over for dinner. itâll be an awkward family reunion for me, but at least sheâll get to see that weâre not living with murderers. just two average, smelly boys.â
   âOh-- right. Sorry. I forget.â Sheâs not as apologetic for forgetting who Ingridâs dad is as much as sheâs embarrassed for not knowing whether or not it was okay to regard it as public knowledge. To this day, no oneâs really sure how many illegitimate children he has.
Before she can finish the sentence, Vee is shaking her head, eyebrows raised incredulously. âAre you kidding? I canât do that. I love you guys. Thereâs no way I can throw you to the lions.â At least not without dressing them up first. Sheâd have to, just to avoid Bambiâs sneer. âMurderers would be better to her. No, Iâd rather go hang out with Dacey.â

   âFeel you up,â Dominic scrunched his nose, rolled his eyes. Surely he was far more refined than that. âYouâre reducing me to someone like Caine.â The name was said with equal amount of distaste, though mostly because he wasnât liking what she was saying. âI can study.â He was feigning hurt, really hamming it up. He could study, but he didnât have to. By no means did he want to. âWell, donât ruthlessly dedicated future general surgeons have to eat? Iâm taking you to dinner. Cheekiness strictly forbidden.â
   âsomeone nice,  you mean?â thereâs a brief flicker of challenge in her words, though they carry little weight â- because caine has always been nothing but wonderful to her, yet sheâs here with the precarious rich boy whoâs far more inclined to break her heart. she knows this, and yet ⊠âdinner and no cheekiness? now thatâs just disappointing.â her eyes lit up as an idea came to mind, one that would really stretch what dominic was willing to do when it came to humoring her. âhave you ever just had pizza and studied? no reservations or wine lists or weird supper clubs, just greasy new york pizza that you immediately regret but canât get enough of?â
     âNo, I mean someone shallow.â Caine isnât all bad, really. Heâs simply the representation of something obvious and normal and what Daisy should probably have. A pleasant, sweet courtship followed by a quaint wedding. Then babies, immediate loss of passion, weight gain. Dominic is a risk and heâs fully aware thatâs at least somewhat thrilling to her.
Privilege and decent standards curl his lip in a slip of contempt. âDoll, how the hell am I supposed to know where to find a pizza that doesnât have five hundred dollars worth of truffles and lobster on it?â Besides, does she truly expect him to study? Is this what his social life has succumbed to? Emmy will be aghast. Thereâs a sigh of concurrence anyway, he shakes his head. âFine. Does ordering a bottle of Sutter Home count as employing a wine list?â
âmoving on from the past doesnât absolve you from the damage done.â fernâs always hated that excuseâ-  move on, move forward, itâs all in the past, blah fucking blah. itâs what her bullshit father said before he croaked, itâs the line used on her when she ran into pete from denver who decided to change his filthy ways and become a family man. fern had grown, but somehow, she still was the stepping stone for liamâs grand road to self discovery. fuck that.âyeah, because if i donât, i know what will happen. youâll make me laugh, weâll get drinksâ- or coffee or kale or whatever the hell youâre on these days. weâll fuck, because weâre verygood at that, and then youâll be back at the loft until we fight again. but i canât do that anymore. i have given you twenty years of my life, and iâm tired, liam. iâm so tired. so if you love me, please sign the papers.âÂ
     âFuckinâ wallowing in it will?â He almost fell back into it - back into the Liam who thrived on screaming matches and cheap shots. He bit back against it, it wouldnât help. Fern would be angry and she would allow herself to really feel that longstanding hate for him. Thatâs something he could accept. Hate was moldable, it was passionate. There was always an opportunity to get back into her bubble. With a vague nod of his head, Liam pulled the papers and pen from her fingers and started initialing them. âThis shit doesnât, like, really matter, you know?â He smacked the papers with the butt of the pen, looking up at her. Thatâs all it was - papers. It meant something to her though, apparently. He sighed lightly, pushed the signed documents back against her arms with a thoughtful smile. âCan I ask you somethinâ? Why canât you just be beside me in this? Isnât this... I dunno, what youâve always wanted? I donât get it. You donât think Iâm for real? What?â
