lennon listens to him, remaining quiet until he finishes his thoughts, though she’s not sure she agrees with it. he isn’t the first one to address her weakness, to tell her that they were dangerous. fatal, even, to some extent. but she can’t shut it off - can’t stop the part of her that cares, that isn’t bullet proof. “we’re fighting against the robots, trying to keep the humanity we have left,” her voice is soft as she speaks, her eyes glancing from his eyes to her hands. “becoming someone we’re not seems counterproductive.”
“yeah, and how’s that working out for us?” he snorts, even before his brain could stop his mouth from bursting out those words. now, he glances away from her, shaking his head while at it. things had turned into complete hell and now, those who survived, did what they could do to keep at it; to keep surviving. that, however, didn’t seem to be enough to him. after a few seconds of brief silence, he spoke again more calmly, standing on his feet again. “i’m gonna go. i need to -- clean my guns or whatever.”
lennon focuses on him before exhaling slowly. “thank you.” she means it, too. she doubted herself enough of these skills enough without having others feeling the same way. she looks away from him, shaking her head. “you were just trying to help.” lennon isn’t sure if that was the truth, but she liked to believe he was. at his next comment, she shrugs, before glancing up at him. she was good at apologizing, did it often. but instead of explaining that, she simply says: “we’ve all got weaknesses.”
a small frown flashed onto his features, surprised to himself to be agreeing to her words. in some way, he’s trying to help. or else he would’ve walked away a good few minutes ago. which is rather strange to him; luca doesn’t find himself wanting to help, often anyways. “not all of us.” he replies. “we can always turn our weaknesses into strengthens and during these times, that’s really the only option left.” if she did so, perhaps she wouldn’t be doubting herself in that moment.
“pretend it was?” lennon asks, an eyebrow raising slightly. she wanted it to be reassuring, needed it to be. in order to leave camp, to fulfill what people needed, she needed to be confident that she’d return with that they needed. that she wouldn’t freeze. she sighs, looking up at the boy with a small frown. “i didn’t mean it like that.” her voice is small, knowing that he just spoke from experience being a raider. “sorry…again.”
“i can do that.” his expression seems to mirror hers, with his eyebrow raising slightly too, when he glanced at her. in all fairness, he really shouldn’t be talking or giving opinion, in that matter. if somebody did that to him, hell would be brought upon heart in a heartbeat. “you should.” he replies quickly. “don’t apologize. it’s a sign of weakness.”
“Secrets? Here? You must be joking.” A light laugh rolled past her lips. She had came to a conclusion a while ago that secrets didn’t stay hidden for long in such a small community. “Threat them?” she repeated cocking an eyebrow. “How?”
“I was joking, but hey, at least I made you laugh.” Luca points out, with a small chuckle of his own. “I don’t know. Depends on who the person that keeps bothering you is,” His teeth tugged the inside of his cheek for a second or two. “Be firm next time -- show that person you’re not going to give in, you know?”
“you wanted to make sure i wouldn’t freeze,” lennon says slowly, shrugging as she watches him join her, “so i’m letting you know that i won’t.” at his questions, she pictures previous times that she’s left camp. injuries were not an uncommon thing. it was simply having someone out there with her, so that she wasn’t alone. it helped keep her sturdy. "i’m not unprepared,” she tells him, voice soft, as she claps her hands together, “just cautious.”
“except that didn’t sound reassuring at all,” luca replies, shrugging his shoulders slightly. not that he’s judging her or anything, he’s just always knee to saying what comes to his mind and what he understands from things. besides, personally, he wouldn’t go out with his mindset fully trusted in someone else’s hands. “i understand.” he nods and looks at her. “don’t mind me. who am i to say anything, right?”
‘ I WAS A budweiser girl, but i suppose any type of actual beer would be nice. especially if it keeps this quiet and we can manage to scavenge up enough sticks and dry wood for a nice large fire as well. but eh - not like we can do any of that with all the shit going on around us. people will think of negatives rather than actually try and go along with it. ’
“Everybody in here needs to get laid -- obviously, they’d kill me for suggesting such thing -- but hell, trying to enjoy the best out of the worst, wouldn’t kill anybody, would it? Supposedly, anyways.”
“No, yea, well, I get that and I don’t care what people use for satisfying them, but, I mean, I already have one person nagging and annoying me with this question, I don’t need any more people doing that. You get me?” the girl asked wincing a little bit. He seemed to be quite chill with this situation, so at least that was going well for her.
“In that case, you’d probably be better off giving into that person’s request already. Make her promise to keep it a secret and you should be good for about two weeks.” Not that he believed anybody could be able to keep a secret in there for that long. “Or set them straight. You know, threat them or whatever it takes to keep them away.”
lennon sits still, wondering why he wouldn’t consider a different approach, when it was something he wouldn’t recommend. just because it worked, didn’t mean that it was for the best. but she felt like she shouldn’t push it, so she remained quiet until he spoke again. “i won’t,” she tells him, hoping that it’s true. though the reminder that they’re having to a get a piece from an assassin bot, keeps her on edge. “i’ve got a partner, too. if anything were to happen. – i’ll just try to train or something until we leave.”
part of him felt relieved, not because he’s staying in camp for this round but because out there, a much more careless and on the edge luca is always leashed and if he found himself paired with someone whom he could quite literally smell of fear from, then things would be a lot more complicated. “are you trying to convince me or yourself of that?” he straight up asks and then, takes a seat beside her. “what if something happens to your partner first? i don’t mean to be negative, but yeah, training sounds good.”
Cheeks burning like they were on fire, Nessa looked at her toes, then back to the man in front of her. “Yes, please and thank you! I’ll be in your debt,” she said hoping he would actually keep his promise. God, this day was horrible.
“Hey, chill out,” Luca smirked, unable to stop himself from noticing how uncomfortable she seemed to be. Like what she had almost yell a couple of minutes ago, turned out to be the biggest secret ever. “We’re all still humans and humans have needs.”
hearing the boy beside her speak, lennon’s eyebrows furrowed slightly as a small frown took the place of her smile. people did what it took to survive, to fight - though it was obvious that his way was somewhat damaging. “maybe you should rethink it then? learn a different way?” at his comment, lennon sat up straighter and shook her head. “i’m okay,” she offered a small smile, trying to convince him. “probably just overthinking it? i’ve been out before, i’m sure it’ll be fine.”
“it works for me.” surely than anything, luca wasn’t the only one on that campsite that had lost much reason to live for. and with him, being dragged out of his apparent normal life like things succeeded, had done some damage; which he’ll never be able to discuss. not considering that’d mean showing his weaker side. “nobody can blame you. the risks are always high.” he huffs. “i just wanna make sure you’re not gonna freeze out there.”
there was so much that was happening outside of their camp. people running for their life, bots capturing and killing the ones that they found. it was easy for her to get lost in her thoughts about what happened to the people she knew. his touch brought her out of her thoughts and she smiled softly up at him, thankful for the reassurance. “thank you.” she took a deep breath, clearing her thoughts. “you’re right.” lennon paused, looking down at her hands. “how do you normally prepare to leave?”
luca dropped his hand beside his body again, with his lips pursed as he noticed that her attention had too changed somewhere else. obviously, if something like this could take a toll in the strongest minds, then anybody could be subjected to a weak moment. “i wouldn’t recommend how i do it.” his tongue darted across his lips as he shook his head. revenge fed him, right to the bottom of his core. “you should probably talk to someone, if you’re not ready to go out.”
“Yes, yes I have. Then I think about those damn bots are out to kill us, and some people still whine over damn paper cuts, and my chill goes out the window. Any other important questions?”
“Be glad. You’re still breathing. Things could be a lot worse, right? Imagine, if everybody couldn’t get hurt anymore and all of the sudden, there’d be no purpose for your presence here.”
lennon nodded once, knowing that he didn’t have to thank her. it was her job at the camp, yes, but it wasn’t too much for him to ask. when he asks her, lennon looks away, eyes lingering on the barrier of the camp. “yeah.” leaving the camp was always daunting to her. she was glad that she could help the rest of the resistance, but the threats that were on the other side kept her awake most nights. she looks back over the male, smiling softly, pushing those thoughts aside. “gathering first aid essentials, a piece from a bot, and hopefully a heineken.”
his brows arched briefly, noticing the slight change of glare within her orbs as she answered the question. honestly, not everybody had the stomach to face what outside brought and everybody dealt with it differently. valmont, however, stopped caring about his own survival a long time ago which turns out to be a good thing in certain, more risky cases. “i hope everything goes smoothly.” he says honestly, resting his hand onto her shoulder in reassurance. “don’t think too much over it. that makes things more tricky.”
Nova shook her head, scoffing a small chuckle. “Shit. Tastes like shit.” The brunette began, crossing her arms over her chest and shrugging her shoulders, her gaze falling for a second. Then, she looked back at the boy. “But it does the trick.” Beggars can’t be choosers and she would give anything for her own bottle of booze, just to have a peaceful mind for a bit.
“Yeah. Shit is a pretty good adjective for it.” Luca couldn’t help but to agree and the worst part of it all? The taste didn’t leave anyone’s breath for God knows how long. No wonder, people find it necessary in cases where is truly their last option. “One year ago, what would be your favorite beverage?”
