Wow this kid is squeaky. So unlike his own mellifluous voice, which has always been consistent in pitch and never annoying. Naturally.

More importantly, mullet-boy’s reaction tells Ewan a few things. As he gets a closer look the theory of secret child becomes less likely. Unless Innes somehow discovered the power of mitosis, the resemblance is a little too similar to suggest parent and child. Secondly, “I” have no illegitimate heirs, the boy says.

“Hold on, hold on! You’re telling me… you are Innes?” Red eyes widen, a hand going to his mouth in surprise. The kid considers himself to be Innes. This opens up new possibilities.

A) Innes somehow shrunk down in size.

B) Innes somehow traveled through time.

Both seem kind of insane, but at this point that shouldn’t surprise him. This monastery seems like a hub for weird happenings. Was it built on a cursed burial site or something?

“Innes is built like a palm tree though! And he’s really scowly and mean and kind of a weirdo. But you’re so small and cute!” He gives the teeny Innes a poke on the cheek, watching with fascination as what he assumes to be remnants of baby fat squish slightly under his index finger.

Never mind the fact they’re probably around the same age, when you spend most of your time around older people you start to consider yourself as more mature as well.

Definitely.

"I am Prince Innes," he insists, though some of the effect is lost when his voice squeaks again. Physicians have claimed it will go away in time, but Innes has waited for enough time!

That is neither here nor there.

"And I am not built like a palm tree." He is only fourteen, so he has no doubt he will grow. As he is currently, he knows he is lanky, but why should he care about that right now? He shoves a bookmark into his book, since clearly, he won't be left in peace to read it.

"I am not cute. Nor am I a 'weirdo', as you put it." He gets to his feet and, luckily, he is taller than this annoyance. Innes tucks his arms behind his back, like a bird folding its wings. He is tense, and if the boy did look behind Innes' back, he'd see his hands shaking. He can keep it together; otherwise, what has this all been for?

"I have no interest in you. Go away."

Innes isn't good with people. He knows it. His natural charms don't work in normal, one-on-one conversations. He just wants to leave. Ideally, he'd like to return home, but he doesn't know where to begin there.

“Oh, are you sure? Really, it’s no problem at all!” It’s too bad, really. Good food is one of the best ways to bond with someone, his mother used to say. “The next cleaning shift won’t be until after dinner, though. And if the dinner shift has to spend time getting the kitchen in order first, it might cause the food to come out late.” Last time that happened, things got rather messy to say the least. “I should help out a little bit, just getting the dishes washed will save them some time.”

Walking closer to the basin, it somehow looks even worse. “But geez, couldn’t those guys have cleaned up after themselves…?” He laughs with a slightly frustrated tone. “I know a few of them from my class. I guess when you’re not used to doing these kinds of things it might not even come to mind.” From what he remembers they’re minor kingdom nobles. He can’t exactly blame them for being unfamiliar with tasks like these… even if it’s a little annoying.

Innes does not want to touch it. He can't. Every time he thinks of his hands touching mystery sludge, he feels bile rise to the back of his throat. Ashe guides them closer, and Innes worries his face may be as green as his hair.

He looks elsewhere, and pretends he can't smell the putrid dishes.

"Some people are lazy, or selfish." Innes is in no place to talk, when he can't even stomach looking at the plates. "There are nobles who have lived nothing but comfortable lives, and have never had to fight a war and help with chores around camp."

Innes is not above helping, of course he isn't - everything is an opportunity to shine. This is not that.

Ha! The tome of a hero. In the lightest of truths, that would be true. If taken literally- if words were warped to their most insignificant form- one could call his Creiddylad the weapon of a hero. But it had never been held in the hands of one.

By the time it was created, he had long since renounced that title.

“It would be arrogant of me to claim such a title,” Is what he choses to say, subdued but not overtly humble, still laying his claim upon the magic that it wrought. "And legends must be formed with time."

Glancing down at the copy once more, he continues, "Strange that the monastery would claim this, but I suppose it makes everything sound more impressive."

Sephiran answers none of Innes' questions. He supposes he doesn't have to. He is vague about himself and his title, which should be a warning. Why doesn't Innes see it as a warning? Sephiran seems humble, truly humble.

Legends must be formed with time. Innes wonders what kind of man could be a legend. He may have to dedicate some research into this; it may prove useful for his own legacy.

"Is it so strange if you are an important figure?" No matter what the true conclusion is, either way, Sephiran must be important. There was a reason for all of this, Innes simply can't put the pieces together.

"I suppose one doesn't understand their own greatness from within, no?" Would Innes ever recognise if he reached true greatness? Perhaps he too would be humble. "Regardless, the tome is yours, even if it is a cheap copy. Do with it as you please."

“I love to cook, personally! It’s something I’ve done ever since I was little. So if you can describe your tastes to me I can probably think of something.” Okay, this seems like progress! Innes wants something simple and home-made. Immediately his mind jumps to soups and stews that can be done in 30 minutes. Or perhaps a well filled sandwich will be more his thing?

While still holding hands, Ashe leads Innes to the dining hall with a notable pep in his step. When they arrive at the kitchen, they pass by a group of teenage boys, both taller and older looking than Ashe, laughing amongst themselves. Seems like they used the kitchen before them?

It would definitely explain the sight that awaits them, as the kitchen is nothing short of a disaster with utensils and unwashed pans everywhere. “Oh.” Ashe voices, softly.

Thankfully he recovers quickly from the surprise. “I should probably clean first before we can get to cooking. I’m sorry, would you mind lending a hand?” He’d really prefer not making Innes help, but they’re not allowed to let go of each other.

Innes looks at the state of the mess. It's no problem, they can return once the cleaners have been.

That isn't what Ashe suggests. Innes looks at the pile of dishes, covered in unidentified foodstuff. He imagines touching it, and his skin crawls. His stomach turns. He can't imagine it. Instinctively, his left hand pulls back.

"I could always wait until dinner," Innes says, uneasy. "There is no training today, I have no need of a snack."

He can't do it. There are few things that Innes simply cannot do, but this is one of them. He stands there, frozen. He can try many things, and will excel at them, but this is something that his body rejects entirely.

Oh dear. Perhaps that wasn’t the best approach… “I’m not implying anything like that. I don’t think you’re a ruffian at all. Think of it more like… ah, yes! A bonding exercise!” He’s read plenty of stories before where friendship managed to sand down the more rugged edges of disagreeable heroes.

“I enjoyed our time together last time. I wouldn’t mind at all to spend a little more time with you.” The younger archer says warmly, unfazed by the older’s prickliness. Honestly, a part of him is even a little curious as to what got Innes branded as a bad egg.

“If you don’t have any ideas, I might have some. Do you have any kind of food in particular you enjoy? I don’t know how capable I’ll be with just one hand, but I’d be happy to whip up a snack for you.” Just in case he’s planned a few activities that takes them around the monastery, should Innes not have any. It’s good to be prepared, after all!

Oh, good. The school thinks he's both friendless and a ruffian. They send a child to befriend him. He wonders what would happen if he were to tumble from the tallest tower in shame.

No. Innes has survived far more than social suicide.

"Well, it has been a while since I've eaten something that wasn't mass-produced," Innes says thoughtfully. What he would truly like is a dish from home, but he doesn't expect his local boy to understand the intricacies of Frelian cuisine.

"I would be content with something simple. My skills in the kitchen are lacking, beyond the basics for survival." Innes does not want camp food - he wants real food.

When asked if he could assist some of the Academy’s more… unique personalities with adjusting to student life, Ashe, as always, is happy to help. What they did not tell him however is that that involves holding hands with that person for an uncertain amount of time.

And the second thing he has not been told, is that he’s with the archer he met at the ball. Back then he didn’t seem all that disagreeable, just a bit.. erm. What’s the nice way to say this… Overconfident?

“Huh? Troublemaker? Me?”

….On top of that, it seems like Innes misunderstood their roles here, too. “Oh! Um… I don’t know if that’s quite it, but I have been asked to spend the day with you.” A slightly awkward, forced chuckle escaped his lips.

“So.. what would you like to do for today?”

"Hold a moment." Innes' feet plant themselves firmly on the ground. "What are you implying? Are you implying that I am some sort of ruffian?"

Involuntarily, his mind flashes back to the ball. To other adventures. He's no ruffian, but he's no saint, either. This hardly means that he ought to be punished. Is Rowan also being saddled with a wrangler? Oh gods, how terribly insulting.

Innes tries to cross his arms, but finds his hand anchored still to Ashe's. "What if I decided to behave like a ruffian, hm? What if I chose to cause a ruckus? What if that's what I want to do today?"

"Whoa, whoa, w-wait!" Of course the first thing the guy does is reach for a weapon, and Gregory flinches backwards, throwing his hands up over his face and trying to get his feet back under him for a getaway. "I would've just left you sleeping if it wasn't dangerous out here!"

For a second he waits for the slice of a blade or, hopefully, the whoosh of that blade missing him because he's so good at getting out of harm's way, but when nothing happens, he peeks through his fingers. The guy doesn't have a weapon, but he sure looks pissed for some reason. Way more angry than a guy who'd woken up on the wrong side of the bed. And he didn't want Gregory anywhere near him, which is fine by Gregory, truth be told. He scrambles backwards three steps, which is far enough that the guy would have to really make a lunge for him if he wanted to hit him.

"I-I'll stand over here, alright? Just don't do anything, er, rash." He drops his arms away from in front of his face to get a better look at him, and he tries to smile in a way that might make him look less enticing to punch, but really it's just kind of a grimace.

"... I meant it about the danger though. If we don't get out of here, we're going to be carrion soon." There's a split second impulse that almost compels Gregory to approach the man again and help him up to his feet, but he catches himself at the last minute and sways forward onto the balls of his feet with the unused inertia.

"If you want to follow me, I know where there's shelter. Oh, and my name's Gregory, by the way. I definitely wasn't the guy who knocked you out and left you in the middle of nowhere."

What?

Innes would clarify the question within his own mind, but he doesn't know where to begin. First of all, he's yet to answer the question of his location, beyond 'dangerous'. It seems wherever he ends up with Griss, it's dangerous.

That's also part of the problem. The man who grimace-smiles before him says his name is Gregory, not Griss. He insists he isn't why Innes is here, on the floor he ought to move from. He says he isn't anything that Innes thinks he is. He thinks of arguing against it, but he doesn't want to waste any more time.

(He will have to think of a way to keep himself safe from Griss, Gregory, whoever this truly is.)

He finally rises to his feet. He dusts himself off, and gives himself a moment to take in his surroundings. No matter where he looks, everything feels off. Dead. He can't imagine where he's ended up, but it's far from familiar.

He turns to Gregory, deciding for now he will play along and cooperate until he can find a way back.

"Very well. Take me to your safe house. Which begs the question: where are we?"

Oh, but this will help! Because: "Hair is nutritious," Henry chirps. "Hair is edible! And your hair is more green than that plant, so... I think it's deeeeelicious enough for 'em!"

The pegasus tilts their head, attention flickering between the green man and the plant. But really, in an ideal world, the pegasus has its attention off the plant, so that means... that means that Henry just has to make the green man look really, really tasty! So to achieve that...?

He goes onto his tiptoes and takes a bite of hair right around the man's ear. A sharp jerk of his head yanks a few strands off — unintentionally, really; Henry just wanted to pretend. A trail of slobber is left on the head of green as Henry pretends to chew his large mouthful of hair ( which, really, is just a few strands that dangle out of his mouth ). His hand reaches to cover his mouth: "Mmmphtphat'sswuperdewichious," he declares. "Shomuchgweenmmmmm."

( or, in proper human: mmm, that's super delicious! so much green. but it translates well enough, for the pegasus stares now at the man with unwavering attention. )

"Excuse me?"

Innes does not say it fast enough. Before he's got a second to even think about it, Henry's mouth is in his hair. His eyes fly open in horror as he feels the strands plucked from his head. "Have you completely, utterly, lost your-"

The pegasus looks over. It's curious, from what Innes can gather. A hoof clops on the acrid land, then another, then the other two. Slowly it approaches, like it's just learned to walk.

It's only then that Innes sees how young the pegasus is. Not quite a foal anymore, but still so young. He wants to shove it away, but even so, he cannot. It's still young.

"What are you doing?" he hisses at the other man. "Stop eating my hair and go grab the blasted plant!"

When Innes had been grabbed for this experience, he had wondered what sort of ruffian he would be paired with. The sort who would skip class? The dangerous sort who would hoist Innes along on misadventures? It was nothing he could not handle.

Except when he had been paired with Ashe, he was confused. Innes stared at his companion, his right hand gripping Ashe's left, and he could not comprehend.

"When we met at the ball, I hadn't thought you would be a troublemaker." Innes hummed. "However, you are nothing I cannot handle."

A-ha! This little one has broken the rules! Does he still remember that by crossing the fire, he is formally entering himself into the fray?

In complete fairness, it doesn't seem like he spares enough energy to care, and neither do the two royals brawling on the floor. ...Ah, well. Rules were made to be broken, after all.

The noise in the room rises to a fever pitch. There stands Rowan's sister, her words landing on deaf ears; Darios, impassive as always but eyes glazing over; Darios's partner, struggling against all hope at the lock. Sanaki frowns — no one actually wants to watch anymore, and a fight isn't any good without a captive audience!

Shaking her head, she shoots a mildly smug look at the masked man by the door — you're on your own, sir — and steps up to her own ring.

Better to neutralize the situation before the redhead gets hit as collateral damage. "Let me help!" she shouts cheerfully to the boy. "...And I suggest you let go of Prince Innes now."

Waiting for one, two, three seconds, Sanaki pulls a thin wand, sparking with electricity, from her sleeve — and fires a bolt into Innes's shoulder.

Innes doesn't hear the world around him. He can't remember the last time he had felt rage so intensely in his life. Had it been when the war began? Or perhaps- no. It doesn't matter, and even if it did, Innes can no longer hear his own thoughts, either.

He keeps sputtering insults, deaf to himself, too. He hates Rowan. It's a hatred from deep within, a place Innes had never even known was there. His heart beats in his ears. He knows nothing but this.

His body seizes and, for an agonising second, Innes can't breathe. Something flows through his body, and it convulses. The jolt blinds him with pain, until Innes has no choice but to let go of Rowan. The feeling eventually subsides, and his body almost collapses entirely on top of Rowan. Barely, just barely, Innes holds on.

Who would do such a thing to him? As the electricity ebbs from his veins, there's only one culprit, Innes realises: Ewan.

A clear of his throat, as his voice creeps back to a higher pitch: "No, I'm quite fond of Prince Innes." And although the squeaking draws the fleeting attention of the creature, it doesn't budge otherwise — so Bruno laughs, soft. "It is not a problem. Animals take to me rather differently compared to others.

"But if its owner is the... Divine Dragon," whoever that may be, "I cannot imagine how much more affection it may have to offer compared to what it graces you with now." He tilts his head. "It must suffocate this Divine Dragon in adoration."

"It seems comfortable enough with you." Relaxed, even. The laugh is nice, Innes thinks dully. It's not a laugh at him, so that's possibly why. He strokes the thing's head. He wishes it had a name, or even a species.

"I suppose so. It must be nice to have a pet." Or a companion of sorts. Gods, he needs to branch out: his only friends are children, and this creature. He'd laugh if it wasn't so terribly sad. "It is a shame we cannot take it with us." He imagines this little creature hobbling around, following people around the monastery.

Lianna sighs heavily as she empties her own glass. Pressing a hand to her head, she gazed at her brother, wincing as the fight commenced in earnest. Why was her brother like this...? Then she looked away.

"I find myself increasingly displeased with my brother's actions," she sighed quietly under her breath. "Can we please break this up before someone gets seriously hurt, please. We're at the Monastery, not on a battlefield."

Frustration lay under her tone as she crossed her arms. Rowan had gotten himself into this mess, and she believed that he should get himself out of it, but honestly? If either of the combatants were going to end this decisively, Lianna hoped it would be soon.

“Ack-!”

Oh, so now the guy had it in him to fight? At least they were speaking the same language, then- but for a brief moment the blond had to focus less on riling up his opponent and more on keeping the contents of his stomach in place. Not that he ate that much before all of this happened, just some snacks here and there and…yeah…yeah maybe he did snack quite a bit before.

But Lianna and Darios- and way too many people were there watching, and that was enough to solidify his resolve and gulp it all down with a grimace. “That didn’t really hurt but…I was about to barf on you, y’know. Do that again and I’ll do it without holding back!” Might as well use it as a threat, then. A promise even- but so far all dialogue would be through fists.

Starting with teaching Innes how good it felt to get sucker punched right in the gut. Rowan pushed the archer away from him- but seconds later socked him in the torso similarly to what was done to him just moments ago.

…and then he quickly stepped to the side, just in case. Yikes. “How do you like that, huh?! Yapping about manners while looking down on people, even though I’m a king and you’re not!”

Rowan hated using titles. Hated it- it felt impersonal, unnecessary. He didn’t want to stand above others, nor wanted to have to look up to face those he saw as friends or allies. Be it within Aytolis or outside of her borders, there was no need to use someone’s title- unless he wanted to prove a point.

The wind is knocked out of Innes with nothing but a punch. His vision turns white for a moment. Somehow he stays standing, which he's glad for when he hears Rowan speak again.

I'm a king, and you're not.

He'd had this discussion time and time again back home. Why is he still unworthy of the crown? Has he not done enough, bled enough, sacrificed enough?

Innes finds his second wind, somewhere in his chest. Without hesitation, he kicks Rowan in between his legs, before shoving him to the floor. Innes hopes it hurts. He hopes Rowan tore something.

Soon Innes finds himself straddling Rowan, gripping him by the front of his clothes. Innes shakes him by his clothes, as if he could rattle the shred of sense from the boy.

"A king? A king? What sort of backwater, run-down, derelict kingdom would have you as a ruler?!" Innes slams him back down on the floor. "You horrible little vermin. You ought to be put down like the disgusting animal you are!"

“Is writing a difficult task, if you’ve learned its intricacies since childhood?” His question is hardly an exaggeration- nor was it a metaphor. Even in these foreign lands, with their tomes filled not with the ancient language that he knew, there still remained something in their pages. One only had to learn to read it, and write it… and a new tome could be created. Though perhaps that was an assumption on his part.

“Every tome must created by someone- unless you subscribe to the idea that there are things without origin," Sephiran's tone indicated his own thoughts on the matter, low and dismissive, "If not directly by one's hands then by another form of older magic. I am not inclined to that sort of craft, if that is what you’re asking.”

He wouldn’t make another, after Creiddylad.

“That being said- what had the Church told you, when providing you with this?”

Innes says nothing for a few moments. "I've offended you. I apologise." Of course there would be other languages, other scripts; there are many from countless continents converging into one spot. How foolish, how inconsiderate of him.

"I've never considered the creation of tomes, much as I've never considered the origins of most things. It's quite shortsighted of me." Things simply come to be. No one discusses the origins of textiles, of construction, or even the art of war.

Things simply happen. Yet in the background, that simply isn't true. Is this the lesson the academy wants to impart?

"I had been told little, other than the tome was used by someone of legend. Heroes, I suppose." Which would match why they had fought against what Innes would class as villains. "Is that how you would class yourself?"

As the weather got colder, news of a local cat cafe recently opening up had caught Marth’s attention. The young prince had never really seen one before… mainly because they never really existed back in Arachnea but he was curious about it…

Why exactly did they call the location a cat cafe? Why exactly were people talking about it? That was what he wanted to know and eventually, that curiosity had led him to actually visit the cafe as a customer.

At first, he wasn’t expecting much but when he saw the multitude of cats running around, he was pleasantly surprised to say the least. Never had he seen such a large gathering of cats but eventually, he had ordered only a single cup of tea and sat down alongside the multitude of felines. One even jumped onto his lap and curled up, causing him to gently pet the creature until eventually, he fell asleep.

It seemed like the calm atmosphere, in addition to the now content cat on his lap had caused him to fall asleep without a second warning.

Innes wouldn't say that he liked animals, but he wouldn't say he disliked them, either. If anything, he was learning he had some sort of knack for them - either that, or his companions had been another flavour of useless.

It would be nice to do some studying with a cat, he supposed. They were supposed to be friendly little things, especially once they warmed up to a person. That sounded familiar, though Innes had to think who he had warmed up to in his two years at the academy.

Well, regardless, he had arrived at the café. Comfortable cats curled up on soft beds, on patrons' laps, and perched on a windowsill. The warmth of the sun must feel wonderful, especially this time of year.

A lot of the tables were full, it seemed. There was one person who seemed very relaxed - no, not only relaxed, asleep. Innes was a good, neighbourly person. He approached the stranger.

It’s one of those perfectly tranquil days today. Shining sun, a gentle breeze, chirping birds, it feels as if Fodlan was trying to look its best for one of those tacky travel guidebooks.

It’s lovely, for sure. But also dreadfully boring.

Having spent the morning reading in a nice spot where the sun shines through the open windows, Ewan could practically feel himself falling asleep. It’s been getting to the point where even magic formulas aren’t exciting the way they usually are.

After a yawn and a lazy stretch, the boy finally decides to get up and return the book. Hopefully he could think of something fun to do when on his way there..

Unfortunately the short walk is just as uneventful as everything else. After babydoll eye-ing his way out of a late return fee, he’s about to leave when..

“Huh?”

He catches a glimpse of a familiar color. That grey… greenish… whatever shade. (Seriously, it feels like every time Ewan sees him his hair is a different color).

The mage is about to approach him with a sly grin, messing with the crown prince of Frelia always being a sure fire way to get some excitement in his day. But he stops, just before speaking up.

Did Innes…. Get smaller?

Not just in body size, it feels as if everything got teenier. From the chubbier cheeks to the softer eyes, everything suggests that this boy is not the prickly prince he knows and loves(?).

This could mean just one thing. And before he realizes what he’s doing, his thought becomes a spoken out sentence.

“No way… Innes has an illegitimate child?!”

Innes had no idea when he ended up here. He supposed flicking between Frelia, Zenith and wherever this was should no longer surprise him. He simply wished to know where he was for curiosity's sake. He suppose he ought to return eventually, but why rush? It wasn't like he would return home any time soon.

He strolled the town, explored the shops, and even managed to be let into the academy. In fact, they seemed to know him, though not without a strange second look. Oh, how the word of Frelia must spread! It delighted Innes to no end.

In the end, Innes found himself at an impressive library. Impressive for an academy, he supposed. From the spines discussing the history of Fódlan, Faerghus, Adrestia, and Leicester, Innes could only assume that he was... in one of those four places. He supposed that didn't narrow it down at all. He grabbed one of the books, a heavy tome on Leicester, before settling down at a desk.

He didn't count how much time had passed, only that time kept passing. He had gotten about a quarter of the way through the book before he heard his name.

"I- excuse me?!" His voice rose in pitch, the sound breaking as it had been doing as of late. Innes sat his hand at the base of his throat, as if willing his voice to go deeper and stay there. It meant he was becoming a man, but he'd quite like to simply be there, now.

"I have no illegitimate heirs. I have never-!" Gods, his voice would soon reach a pitch only animals could hear. Which, from the looks of this boy, would include him too.
