A character trait/dynamic that I'm endlessly compelled by is someone dealing with (or, like, failing to) being the child of people who were too busy being good people to have the time and attention to be good parents. This can be anywhere from 'was a public defender who gave a shit working 60 hour weeks with basically no vacations' to 'left their family behind to join the revolution/war effort and is now a universally beloved martyr-hero who saved/remade the world with their final breath' on the groundedness spectrum. The important thing is a viscerally felt but confused and ugly mess of longing, resentment, and guilt about feeling the resentment.
Human Is is a 1955 Philip K. Dick sci-fi short story where a guy goes to another planet for work and when he comes back to Earth his personality has flipped from an asshole to a sweet, kind, considerate man. Everyone's immediately convinced that an alien has taken over his body, this goes all the way to court, and in court his wife testifies that she's noticed no changes at all and so the charges are dropped.
And then there's a bit right at the end of the story as the wife and the husband are walking out of court:
Jill turned abruptly. "What is your name? Your real name."
The man's gray eyes flickered. He smiled a little, kind, gentle smile. "I'm afraid you would not be able to pronounce it. The sounds cannot be formed..."
Jill was silent as they walked along, deep in thought. The city lights were coming on all around them. Bright yellow spots in the gloom. "What are you thinking?" the man asked.
"I was thinking perhaps I will still call you Lester," Jill said. "If you don't mind."
"I don't mind," the man said. He put his arm around her, drawing her close to him. He gazed down tenderly as they walked through the thickening darkness, between the yellow candles of light that marked the way. "Anything you wish. Whatever will make you happy."
And I. God. There's something there. A soupcon of monsterfuckery. To tell your partner in a moment of intimacy that yes, you're something so inhuman that the lips you're stealing can't speak your actual name. You're a parasite that not only had the ability to burrow under this man's skin and take over his life, but you were so desperate to escape a dead, dry, blasted planet that you did.
And for your partner to then turn around and go "I know, I've always known, and I love you" is just. God I know it's not a great Dick story but something about it is making me lose my mind
It is so ridiculously easy to gain a reputation for being competent by just reading signs.
This is not metaphorical. I mean actual, literal pieces of paper/plastic/metal/whatever explicitly erected to inform the public.
“How did you know this was the right trail?” I read the sign.
“Wow, how did you know what that flower is?” There’s a SIGN.
“How did you know we needed to use the side door?” THERE IS A SIGN POSTED ON THE FRONT DOOR.
Just…why are we having such different experiences of the world? People can read. I KNOW they can read. There’s nothing wrong with their vision.
Just. READ. THE. GOD. DAMN. SIGN.

For all that the 1800s etiquette guides are--obviously--derangedly sexist from a modern perspective? They're also mindblowing in how casually they will assert things that MODERN DAY CONSERVATIVES would scream and cry and shit their pants about.
"People back then always married young it's natural!!!" Every single 1800s guide I've ever met casually mentions that, of course, you really shouldn't get married before you're at least 20, and waiting until 25 is usually better.
Or, like. Okay here's a long segment:
Just firmly going "it is crazy sexist to blame The Wife for overspending when thirty seconds of asking questions will immediately establish that her husband was outright lying to her about how much money they had. Talk to your wife like a normal person."
Or--okay, here. A section on being honest and not writing love letters in secret, because that's usually a good sign that there's something untoward going on....
....except that he then immediately acknowledges that sometimes, the reason you're hiding this from your parents is that your parents suck. That there are parents who frankly have not earned the right to approve or disapprove of your partner.
(I realize the phrasing there sounds a lot less strong than my summary, but--trust me on this. When you're familiar with the narrative voice of these kinds of books, this passage is downright radical. The mere acknowledgement that if you treat your kids badly, it's your own damn fault when they don't talk to you? I've genuinely never seen that before in this genre. Don't freak out over "properly trained", either. It's just a linguistic shift--at the time, "training" was used the way we would say "raising" a child today. )

Wtf is happening.
PLEASE REBLOG.
I saw a fair few fics where Papyrus introduced Mettaton to Sans and Sans did the whole "Overprotective father who considers his daughter property and therefore doesn't allow her any agency" act, when there's a much funnier alternative to have Sans be a protective jackass without any of the implications about Papyrus being unable to make his own choices...
Like, Sans canonically works for Mettaton guys. He does stand up comedy at his resort. And we know Mettaton isn't a great boss and the working conditions under him are not fantastic, have you guys seen Burgerpants?
He absolutely would give Mettaton shit if Papyrus brought him home! Like, can't believe that, of all people his cool little brother could have dated it was the capitalist. Smh.
Buddy would also definitely leverage that against his boss. I'm imagining things like: "If you don't give me a raise I'm gonna show up to the wedding dressed in my pajamas" "Papyrus would hate that too" "Papyrus is happy any time I get out of bed in the morning, try again buckaroo"
I have an ask for UF, SF, SFG, MT, and MF
Their S/O is like a living ray of sunshine - super friendly and nice to everyone - until skeleton gets home after being out and relizes that they have been kidnapped so they hurry to find/save S/O but when they finally make it to where the kidnappers are one of them burst out of the building and starts begging skeleton for mercy as S/O is wacking someone else over the head with a chair, with their other ex-kidnappers in various states on incapacitation
(sorry if this is kinda convoluted, I love your stuff BTW)
Underfell Sans - Holy shit. Red completely forgets what he's supposed to do, and struggles to keep his shit together, laughing at these guys misery. He cheers his S/O and will gladly help them to bonk any idiot trying to get up again. Well, that's good to know!
Underfell Papyrus - What. Edge came here in full armor to fight for your honor, but now it's just pathetic. He's glad you faced amateurs and not fully trained soldiers, but still. This is ridiculous. How can you all be so bad at your job? Kidnappers are so lame since they reached the Surface. He's embarrassed for them.
Swapfell Sans - He just leans against a wall and watches the show, commenting from time to time on how to upgrade your posture for better efficiency. One of the guys even dares to beg him for help, to which he answers by kicking him straight in the face like he's some cockroach. Once they're all on the floor, he invites you to the restaurant because why not.
Swapfell Papyrus - He was sort of panicking but it's all forgotten now. Reminds him to never make you angry, he for sure would not like ending like these guys. It's good to know you know how to defend yourself, though; it makes his job a lot easier since he hates to fight. He's giving you a round of applause as soon as they're all on the floor, cheering you.
Fellswap Gold Sans - You ruined his dramatic entrance. Usually, kidnappers all freak out when he's showing up somewhere but they can't freak out if they're already on the floor. Wine just huffs, annoyed. Could you at least pretend you need him to save you? That's not fun.
Fellswap Gold Papyrus - He was ready to call Wine for help until he saw you fight. He's speechless, mouth wide open. He didn't know you could do that. That's cool actually. He's a bit flustered seeing you fight now. He joins you to fight to show you he can be cool too!
Mafiatale Sans - But he brought a bomb to explode the building and now there's nothing left to explode :( He's pouting, so you tell him he can still explode the building as you leave. Yeah! He loves exploding stuff! You both watch the building explode on a hill, cuddling under the flames.
Mafiatale Papyrus - So, do you need his help or what? Because he was supposed to go to work but he came to save you and now he's just wasting his time since you actually don't need his help. Can't you send him a text next time to tell him to not come? He hates getting late to work for nothing.
Mafiafell Sans - His dogs are confused because they didn't do anything, but the bad guys are already on the floor. He's confused too, honestly. What now? He can't tell his dogs there's no bad guys to attack, they're going to be sad! At least keep the last guy up so they can be useful!
Mafiafell Papyrus - He still knocks out a random guy with his fists. He's glad you can defend yourself and all, but at least let him have some fun too. It's not fair you're the only one who's authorized to hit all these idiots. What does he look like now?
How would the skellies react to realizing that you're trying to compare height with them, like coming close to them checking whether your shoulder is higher than theirs?
(UT, UF, US, MF, HT, SF)
Undertale Sans - I mean, that's not too complicated. Sans just gives you an interrogative look. Yeah, he's still short. Did you expect him to grow during the night or something? He informs you his brother already tried it once by making him bathe in milk because he learnt calcium makes bones grow, but apparently that doesn't work with magic skeletons.
Undertale Papyrus - He noticed you were sort of mad you're shorter the last time you did that, so he just bends his knees a little to make you look taller. You're victorious for 5 seconds and then you notice. You just sigh and go to pout on the couch. Sorry! He didn't want you to feel bad!
Underswap Sans - Blue hates that he's short, and so he immediately tiptoes to make himself taller. He stares at you. Don't you dare say that he's still shorter even like this or he's going to put so much salt in your coffee you'll feel like you drank the Pacific Ocean.
Underswap Papyrus - You're having a competition because he's taller, but only from one inch. The day you're beating him, he's cheering. Though, sorry to tell you, but skeletons never stop growing, unlike humans, and you might lose sooner than you think.
Underfell Sans - The hell you're looking at? He puffs up immediately to look more threatening, even if it's clearly not working on you. He can't help it, it's a defense mechanism. He hates when people look down at him, it reminds him he's short and so considered weak by most of monsterkind, which he's not, by the way. He's slightly offended now.
Underfell Papyrus - He lets you have your fun, then just smirks when it's clear he's winning this by far. He pets your head affectionately and tells you that every child gets taller eventually, and you'll be there. You gasp, offended. You're not a child, asshole!
Horrortale Sans - He's confused about what you're doing and so just puts his big head above yours to see whatever you're doing with your hand. You look at his head about your, blink, and then sigh. Yeah, no, you're not getting taller than him before a long, loooong time. He just tilts his head cutely, wondering why you're grumpy, which doesn't help.
Horrortale Papyrus - He stays still, staring you down awkwardly. Uh... What are you doing? He thinks it's quite obvious he's taller than you and 99.99% of everyone in the world? If it can comfort you, he's pretty sure you gained two inches since he met you. You whine pathetically, as it's been ten years he knows you now.
Swapfell Sans - He low growls at you. Are you trying to mock him because he's small? Because if so, he reminds you he entered the Royal Guard all by himself when he was even shorter than this, and he has still beaten the hell out of every little shit that tried to remind him. You gulp, and squeak that you didn't. Yeah. That's what he thought.
Swapfell Papyrus - He smirks, kisses you, and whispers in your ear that yes, you are still short. You kick him with your knee in the pelvis. He whimpers and falls on his knees. Say shit, get hit.
Mafiafell Sans - He mimicks you thinking he's winning this easy, but then he realizes you're taller than him and he kicks your leg to make you shorter again. Stop growing up or he'll end up biting your ankles for real.
Mafiafell Papyrus - He puts his hand on your shoulders to tell you that even if you somehow miraculously get taller than him, he will always look scarier than you, so why are you not giving up and crying with your baby face? You grab his spine, he goes entirely limp, like when you grab a kitten by the scruff. He's also not talking to you the rest of the day, so mad you know about this.

I hope the person who wrote this tag knows this was the first thing I saw this morning when I woke up and I actually almost started crying
all engineers are brothers (found attached to a steamship's engine):
1. 'The Squeak' apparently is originating from the Low Pressure (LP) valve. This is a large "D" slide valve with a lot of metal to metal contact. 2. We have inspected the valve, seat and LP cylinder and piston numerous times. We can find no evidence of rubbing, galling, burnishing, or any other sign of metal to metal contact. 3. 'The Squeak' is dependent on engine speed and temperature; as the engine heats up 'The Squeak' increases. Inexplicably, as the speed increases the sound decreases. 4. Suggestions about using WD-40 or needing sewing machine oil are not helpful. 5. If you wish to discuss 'The Squeak' with the Chief Engineer please donate $1 to The Squeak Abatement Fund to aid in construction of a new LP valve. If too many passengers speak with the Chief regarding 'The Squeak', the donation may be diverted to the Chief's beer fund.
