Lutero odiaba a los judíos y no se cansaba de azuzar la inquina hacia ellos. «Si yo pudiera, yo mismo arrojaría al judío al suelo y en mi ira lo atravesaría con la espada.» En su panfleto Über die Juden und Ihre Lügen (Sobre los judíos y sus mentiras, 1542), recomienda aplicar a los judíos la siguiente política: quemar sus sinagogas y escuelas; derribar sus casas y concentrarlos a todos en establos, como ganado; quitarles todos sus libros y prohibirles bajo pena de muerte enseñar su religión, confiscar todos sus vienes, hacerles trabajar hasta la extenuación y no permitirles andar por los caminos. «Sería incorrecto mostrarse misericordioso con los judíos y confirmarlos así en su conducta. Si esta política tampoco soluciona el problema, debemos expulsarlos como perros rabiosos, de tal modo que no nos hagamos cómplices de su abominable blasfemia y de sus vicios, y no despertemos la ira divina y seamos condenados con ellos.» Con estas recomendaciones, no es de extrañar que los judíos fueran pronto expulsados de Sajonia, la tierra natal de Lutero, y otros principados alemanes. Todavía tres días antes de morir, Lutero dedicó su último sermón a exigir la inmediata expulsión de Alemania de los judíos que no quisieran convertirse al cristianismo. Los escritos de Lutero, usados por predicadores calenturientos en los principados protestantes, con frecuencia condujeron a la masacre de los judíos. De hecho, Lutero es una de las fuentes capitales del antisemitismo alemán que en el siglo XX desembocaría en el nazismo. When people use the word "Jesus", then, it's important for us to ask who they're talking about. Are they referring to a token of tribal membership, a tamed, domesticated Jesus who waves the flag and promotes whatever values they have decided their nation needs to return to? Are they referring to the supposed source of the imperial impulse of their group, which wants to conquer other groups "in the name of Jesus"? Are they referring to the logo or slogan of their political, economic, or military system through which they sanctify their greed and lust for power? Or are they referring to the very life source of the universe who has walked among us and continues to sustain everything with his life and power and grace and energy? Jesus is both near and intimate and personal, and big and wide and transcendent. One of the many things people in a church do, then, is name, honor, and orient themselves around this mystery. A church is a community of people who enact specific rituals and create specific experiences to keep this word alive in their own hearts, a gathering of believers who help provide language and symbols and experiences for this mystery.
