Now that I’m starting to chill out again I’ve gotta mention how much I love Kobayashi as the heroine of this story. Attention isn’t brought to it explicitly ever, but Kobayashi’s power is basically heart. It’s an ability to connect and understand those she meets, and the insight to tell them exactly what they needed to hear. She wins Tohru over while drunk because of this. She convinces Kanna to accept her hospitality and ultimately provides the young girl with the home life she’s never had. She stands up to a dragon called the goddamn Emperor of Demise and convinces him to change his mind. In a world of literal gods and world-shaking magic, surrounded by dragons, Kobayashi is able to make her way not because of some inner power or inherent specialness. She doesn’t outwit or outmaneuver her opponents either. She just listens to & understands them and always find an unlikely common ground. And she does this while still being grounded, sometimes pessimistic, and pretty much utterly unaware of how amazing her feats are.
