After Peridot’s attempts to win over Lapis fall flat, Peridot goes to the greatest length of all - handing over her most prized posession to Lapis, the tape recorder.
Peridot has offended all of the other Gems at some point in the past, but she’s never been seen to perform as grand a gesture as this one in order to win them over.
Peridot is, in a lot of ways, incredibly materialistic - she has been shown on more than one occasion to hold her very few posessions really closely to her (clinging onto the limb enhancer’s foot in “Catch and Release”, the fact that she’s affronted by the idea that Lapis would get the side of the barn with the paint cans in this episode, and the lovingly-delivered line “At least I have you, tape recorder” in this episode along with the tape recorder’s obsessive use throughout the series up to this point). By Peridot’s standards, handing the tape recorder over is essentially the biggest thing she could do for someone, which indicates that she thinks very highly of Lapis indeed.

read an AITA earlier today about a guy who would walk his female friend home to her dorm very often UNTIL she rejected his romantic advances*, then when she asks him to walk her home bc she's drunk and feels unsafe he says no. Men in the comments were clamoring to insist he "didn't owe her anything" and that she was a deceptive harpy who wanted to use her #femaleprivilege to get "special treatment"

i got Weiss brain rn so here's how i think Weiss might be the last winter maiden we see in the show and Winter is probably gonna die bc i was watching a reaction vid where ppl started speculating on all of the team becoming maidens and i don't think that's true but i think if any of them get it it WILL be Weiss this is my crystal ball rn

idk if ALL of team rwby would get the four maiden powers, i doubt that, but something inside me has started thinking Weiss will get Winter's powers and that would be her ultimate cap off as the last knight of Atlas; for some reason it feels like Winter will die in a future volume probably because of all the cracking under the burden of outside pressures and running herself into the ground for any cause she attaches herself to; and also Winter constantly talking about how Weiss is the best of the Schnees, the true Schnee heir of their generation; it feels like Winter is someone who will ultimately crack under the strain of trying too hard to do so much because she can't Deal with the world and people the way she feels Weiss can no matter how she tries (because where Weiss broke free of their father's grooming Winter really just replaced their father with Ironwood's grooming and Weiss even alludes to this talking to her about Fria in Vol 7, but bc Winter sees it as she 'chose' that path she doesn't fully realize she's just moved from one abuser to another), and then Winter will probably die in a heroic sacrifice giving it all she could but never being able to overcome the personal weaknesses that separate her from someone like her sister's character, so that thematically Weiss has lost so much but is rewarded for continuing to give all of herself into growing and being a better person, and continuing to choose the freedom to be a better person, a true knight
there's also the legacy aspect where Weiss from day 1 has worried over trying to live up to other's expectations and the sense of legacy reinforced in her through her sister and her grandfather etc and wanting to make up for Jacques being a shitstain on her family (paralleling Ruby inheriting Summer's will and forcing herself to live up to an ideal of Summer and what Summer's legacy and the legacy of all heroic figures should look like in her head) and Weiss wants to be worthy and alike to the people she admires, because she believes they are the ones with strength and nobility and kindness and agency she didn't have, and that includes how she admired Pyrrha
so if Weiss becomes the last winter maiden we see in the show it would fulfill one half of the foiling she has with her sister that being that one of them was able to attain true freedom of self, and she would also finally be worthy of everything she admired about Pyrrha who alongside her sister was her vision of a true warrior (and because Penny is also part of that legacy chain, the theme of a doll and the doll imagery associated with Weiss and her wanting to break free of that the same way Penny wanted and did in the end matches to Weiss too, the puppet becomes human) - idk it feels like a gut instinct to me that Weiss will be the last winter maiden because she's the one who embodies what that should mean the most, she even has versatile powers the way maiden abilities are versatile too
her semblance is the only one that's hereditary AND functions like magic following magic-like rules with control over different properties or "spell types" through her glyphs; maiden powers are literally just the magic Ozma gave to the four sisters who were the original four maidens
**ALSO Atlas was corrupt and ravaged morally by the fascist joining of its military industrial complex with its rampant capitalism and wealth disparity making the country feel too big to fall and ultra nationalistic and losing the human element that would have prevented the fall of Atlas crumbling so hard like it did not really because of Ruby's plan but because the country's issues made no one trust each other at all until it was too late, and it left them vulnerable to Salem's agents who could so easily walk all over everything-
Weiss subverts all of that, all of what it means to be a stereotypical Atlesian asshole after she left Atlas and experienced love and life outside of it, Weiss becoming the maiden season associated with Atlas would be like a way of saying even a place like Atlas could produce a true hero in spite of itself; even if ironically Atlas had to fall literally and in how Weiss broke away from Atlas values mentally for Atlas to be redeemed through her in that way; Atlas the country couldn't live up to the ideals it preached and it died for betraying them, but one of its citizens was able to break that cycle and DID live up to the ideals Atlas was supposed to be about, the one Atlesian who DID better humanity and became something higher to serve the world the way Atlas bragged it was doing because she lost those failed shackles in the first place
Atlas put its faith in soldiers but its destruction created the hero it always wanted to make

* last time i touch this but also in the Grimm version of Snow White that Weiss is based off of, Snow White never escapes being shackled to suffering under the control of others and the hate of her evil jealous mother, and she's even forced to wear burning iron shoes that were thrown in a fire and made to dance until she dies; Weiss pursuing her own freedom and agency and getting it goes against the Grimm Snow White, and Weiss breaks that cycle by making herself not at the mercy of others
Winter = Snow = Snow White after all the other winter maiden were named shit like Fria and literally Winter Snow

Idk maybe it’s just me but when I watched su for the first time I thought it was painfully obvious that Lapis & Peridot were supposed to be seen as a pair
They’re the only gems that really actually live together, sure the others live at the temple but they all have their own ‘rooms’ (dimensions) which are MUCH bigger than the temple itself, they’re only ever out of them for Steven’s sake
Even later in the series, movie & future they’re rarely seen fully apart, and when they are apart.. they’re nearly always talking about each other
Im pretty sure in the entire movie we do not see them separately and if we do it’s because one of them is just slightly out of frame lmao like they were just reinforcing the fact that the two are very much a pairing after the series has ended and Lapis returns to earth
I’m not even saying they’re meant to be a romantic pairing before someone gets angry at me (again), but we all know Rebecca Sugar said they had to let go of some things they wanted for the show bc Cartoon Network were really strict about lgbt characters (fuck them for that btw) so it would not surprise me in the absolute slightest if changes to lapis and peridot were made because of that, especially considering multiple people who worked on the show v much enjoyed them as a romantic pairing aswell

regardless of your opinions on lapidot whether you love it or hate it, see it as romantic or platonic etc you cannot deny that this was very clearly meant to represent a breakup (even if that’s not exactly what they’re going through, it’s probably the closest ‘human’ experience you could relate it to)
the not leaving her room, listening to sad music, the way when her friends finally drag her out of her room she did nothing but mope around and talk about Lapis or the barn, the way she suddenly had the most negative overdramatic outlook on the world and things she used to love just made her feel miserable instead, like this is all textbook movie breakup stuff and i think about it ALL the time
that’s not even mentioning Lapis taking their home and leaving Peridot with their pet, no one talk to me about this i will cry
i dunno, i just really enjoy an appreciate the small details around their dynamic and how it develops into so many different things throughout the show, how they go from enemies to strangers to roommates?? to.. going through some type of breakup without it ever being disclosed officially if they were even romantically involved? someone rescue them (and me)
