Aria grins as she sees the pink light again, staring at her bracelet in wonder. She was sure that the sight was never, ever going to get old to her, especially with how important light was to Octarians. Octarians believe their souls are made of light, after all, so being able to communicate through light alone made Aria’s hearts flutter.

“I think it’s definitely gonna be an improvement. It’s…it’s gonna be nice to have a really powerful deep-frying machine, and one that’s been built for the task. I wanna use it all the time.”

Aria just watches with pride as Nori puts on the necklace. She can’t help but think that Nori looks absolutely beautiful wearing it. “Yeah, I…I collected and shined all the shells myself. I’m…I’m really glad you think it’s so pretty and I’m glad you love it so much. I’m just glad to see you so happy too, y’know? Bi rights!”

She returns Nori’s grin with a wide grin of her own, eyes twinkling with glee. “Thanks, babe. I’m…I’m glad you like it. I hope that little poetry book can cheer you up no matter how you’re feeling. I tried to think of, like…lots of things that might make you smile and laugh. I definitely do think you shouldn’t read it all at once, but…if you do, you can always come back to the poems again. I hope they’re just as cute on the second read.” 

Aria giggles quietly and blushes when Nori kisses her cheek, then she kisses Nori on the cheek as well. “And thank you for everything you got me. Including this vacation. Seriously, it’s…it’s exactly what I needed, and…and it’ll be really nice to spend a week here with you.” She hops onto the bed, curling up in the weighted blanket. “So…what do you wanna do while we’re here? I just wanna cuddle for the rest of the day, but, like…maybe tomorrow we could go hiking or something.”

“We’ll definitely have to try deep frying a bunch of stuff in it at some point.” It would be able to handle it for sure.

Nori definitely felt beautiful wearing the necklace. It was going to be her good luck charm in like, everything she did. “You’re like, super good at making jewelry. I love it so much.” 

“Oh yeah, I don’t think I’ll ever be upset again as long as I have a poem to read.” Nori grinned. “I’ll try not to read them all at once, though. Even though that’s going to be really difficult.” She had some moderate level of self-control when it came to things like that, at least. “They’ll definitely still be cute no matter how many times I read them.”

She nodded in response. “Oh yeah, no problem. I’m excited to spend time with you, honestly.” Nori thought a moment. “I definitely wanted to do some outdoors things, but I kinda want to relax for the rest of the day with you.” At least they were on the same page for today’s activities. Nori hopped into the bed next to her, wiggling her way under the weighted blanket. It was a strange feeling, being under something with so much weight that wasn’t living, but it was also kinda nice. She could see why something like a weighted blanket would be nice for people.

“Hiking tomorrow sounds nice. It’d be cool to walk in one of the forests and take in the scenery, especially since a lot of the leaves have changed already.”

“I…I love it, I really do. It’s perfect for me. Because…because now it feels like…like no matter how far away we are, you’re always right here.” She taps the band on the bracelet again with a truly adorkable grin.

Aria closes her eyes and nuzzles Nori in return. The hug was the best thing in the world to her, as brief as it was - there was really nowhere else she’d rather be than in Nori’s arms. She’d love to have a special code to use for the bracelets, too - it would be much quicker than sending texts, and in Aria’s opinion, much cuter as well. The idea of being able to say ‘I love you’ from miles away with just a few taps to the bracelet was really appealing.

“Aw, I don’t…I don’t think there’s such a thing as overboard, babe. I love everything you got me. It’s…it’s all so sweet, and…and I really appreciate it all. It shows that you really thought about what I’d love, especially…especially the bracelets.”

She takes the first gift out of her jacket pocket, handing it to Nori. It’s a necklace made of smoothed and shined abalone shells, glittering in all sorts of brilliant purple and blue colors. “This is…this is a traditional Octarian anniversary gift. I made it myself, and…and I thought you might really like the bi pride shells. And…and I made something else, too.”

Aria takes a small notebook out of the same pocket, and before handing it to Nori, opens it up to the first page. It’s full of poetry - each page has a short love poem in it, with lots of little doodles around the edges. Hearts, pride flags, E-Liters and Hydras, and even the occasional stick figure drawing of herself and Nori. “I’ve…I’ve been working on this one for a while. Every time I think of a poem about you, every time I think of a poem that you’d find cute or funny, I…I write it down in here. I hope you enjoy reading them as much as I enjoyed writing them.” 

“I’m glad. That’s the vibe I was going for with them.” Nori grinned, tapping on her bracelet too.

“Good. I’m honestly excited for you to try out the deep fryer. The Explosher ones are cool and all, but this one is like... almost top of the line.” And it was built for deep frying, unlike the Explosher. It was already kitted out and had the right parts. 

Nori took the necklace carefully in her hands, looking it over with an interested gaze. It was beautiful to look at, and it shone in the lighting of the cabin. She immediately went to put it on, missing the clasp a few times, before finally getting it. “You made this? It’s so beautiful, I... I love it. I’m never going to take it off unless I have to. I love the colors too. Bi rights.”

She’d take the notebook from her next, smiling fondly as she opened it up and was greeted with a poem. The doodles on the edges of the page were also adorable. Nori read over the poem, flipping the page to read the next one, before looking up at Aria with a big grin. It was a cute gift, and it made her hearts swell.

“This is so... so cute.” Nori hugged the notebook close to her chest, afraid that she’d lose it somehow if she didn’t keep it close. “Now whenever I feel sad or upset or anything, I can just... read a poem and feel instantly better. It’s going to take a lot of self control not to like, read through all of them in one night.” Nori kissed Aria on the cheek.

“Thank you so much for both of these gifts. Happy anniversary.”

“.............. You have to be shitting me right now.” Maki came home to about seventy grilled cheeses on the floor. She could hardly push the door open because they were blocking it.

Aria’s face lights up with joy as the bracelet does, piecing together what must be going on just moments before Nori starts to explain it all. “This is…this is…” She can’t even form a coherent sentence for a little while. “This is the sweetest thing anyone’s ever gotten me. Like…like, ever.” She gently taps her bracelet with her finger, giggling with joy as Nori’s lights up. “It…it means so much to me to know you’re thinking of me, and…and to be able to let you know when I’m thinking of you too. It’s…it’s almost like we’d never be apart now, like…like no matter where we are or what we’re doing, we’ll always be able to, like…to reach out like this, to…to tell each other that we love each other. And..and the fact that you put so much work into making these too, and that they’re so special and unique, it’s…it’s so sweet, and so cute, and…and…”

She pulls Nori into a hug, tightly holding her. Having run out of words that she could use to accurately communicate just how amazing she felt getting this gift, just how much she appreciated all the thought and love that went into it, she felt like physical affection was the best choice. She knew she wouldn’t be taking off this bracelet unless she really, really had to - even the thought of seeing the band light up pink was enough to fill her with comfort and happiness.

After a moment, she pulls back, grinning like the absolute dork she is. “So, uh…so, do you wanna see what I got you? I’ve only got two gifts, not four, but…but I hope both of them are things you love.”

“I’m really glad you like it. Seriously. I kinda figured you would, but there’s always that little part of my mind that says otherwise.” Nori grinned. Listening to Aria ramble about the gift was absolutely adorable, and it made her relieved that her gift was received so well. 

She hugged Aria back, Nori nuzzling Aria’s cheek with her own. Nori definitely wasn’t going to take the bracelet off ever unless she absolutely had to as well. Thankfully, they were both ink proof as well, like most things in cephalopod society were. Nori was going to have to talk to Aria more later about making some sort of code they could use with the bracelet, something with taps that conveyed specific messages. Morse code could work, but Nori felt like they could definitely make something more simple.

“Yes, please.” Nori replied with a nod. “And don’t worry about that, I originally was just going to do the bracelets, but I kept seeing things in stores that made me think of you, so... I kinda went a bit overboard.” She added with a slight laugh.

“I’m excited to see what you got me, though. You’re really good at picking gifts out for me.”

There wasn’t such a thing as overboard, as far as Aria was concerned. She found it really sweet that Nori had gotten her so many gifts, and really sweet that the gifts were absolutely perfect to her. 

“I love all of them,” Aria smiles, looking around at the gifts. She was sure she’d treasure each and every one of them. “The…the blanket is seriously perfect. Do you like weighted blankets too? ‘Cause…’cause if you do, we can put this on the cabin’s bed.”

She takes the bracelet out of its box, examining it curiously. There was some sort of band around it, and her first thought was just that it looked really pretty. And it was totally her style, too. Aria carefully slips it on, smiling at how well it fits - since it’s a gift from Nori, she can’t imagine ever wanting to take it off unless she needs to. And that’s before she knows what it does.

Curiously, she touches the band on the bracelet, examining its texture - and she immediately notices a dark red glow coming from one of Nori’s pockets. She stops touching the band, and the glow stops - then she touches it again, and the glow resumes. “Wha…”

Nori smiled a little as she took the glowing bracelet from the pocket of her jacket. She’d tested them before, obviously, but she was always nervous about something going wrong. They still were working perfectly.

She’d touch the band of her own glowing bracelet, watching as the one in Aria’s hand lit up a soft pink, now putting it on her own wrist. “They’re bracelets that respond to touch. It sucks when we’re apart, but with these I can let you know when I’m thinking about you,” Nori touched the band again, “and yours will light up. The same happens for yours. Mine will light up whenever you touch your bracelet.” She explained. 

“There were already a few things kinda like this, but none of them were wearable, so... we have the only two of these bracelets in the world. It makes it even more special.”

Sudden or not, Aria loved the idea of this vacation - it was exactly what she needed. Spending a few days with Nori just hanging out in a cabin together sounded like heaven on earth, especially because it was their anniversary. 

She hums softly with enjoyment as she follows Nori into the cabin. It’s warmer inside than it is outside already, and the fireplace is going to help a lot with that. Aria keeps her flannel jacket on - sure, it’s warm, but she likes the warmth. The fact that it has massive gay energy helps too.

Aria’s eyes are drawn to the presents immediately, and she can’t help but tilt her head in curiosity as Nori grabs one of them. If that one was last, it must be really special…and Aria can’t wait to see what it is. “Thanks, babe.” Aria gives Nori a gentle smooch on the cheek. “This is…this is really sweet of you. The vacation, all the presents…all of it. I love you so much.”

She opens the boxes in order of their size - not for any particular reason, it’s just what comes most naturally to her. She’s overjoyed by the deep fryer, examining it closely and noticing the modifications immediately. “Aw, I love it! I’m gonna have so much fun messing around with this. I’m gonna deep-fry, like…everything in the kitchen.” Unfortunately, that’s barely an exaggeration. 

As soon as Aria opens the next box, she pulls the blanket out and experimentally snuggles up to it, grinning widely as she feels its texture and weight. “This is perfect! Like…like no, really. This is the perfect blanket for me. I…I love fuzzy things, and this weight is gonna make it really easy for me to sleep.”

She opens the smallest box last, eagerly taking out a few of the stim toys and playing with them. She didn’t even know there were squishy E-Liters out there…Nori had clearly tried really hard to find gifts that Aria would love, and she’d succeeded. “I can never have too many stim toys…and that E-Liter one is really fuckin’ cool. You…you know me really well, babe. These are some of the sweetest gifts I’ve ever gotten in my life. And…and I really wanna see what’s in that last box. Then I can give you my gifts!”

Nori was relieved to see Aria’s positive reaction to all the gifts. She may have went a little overboard, but she enjoyed splurging on presents for her girlfriend. 

“I’m really glad you like all of them.” Nori grinned. “The weighted blanket was something I didn’t think about until I saw one. I knew I had to get it the moment I found it.” Nori messed with the box in her hands a moment, before handing it to Aria.

“I really hope you like this one. It was something I had to plan for a while... and I needed extra help with it.” In the box was a bracelet, made of a tough material that made them extra durable. It was black in color, and there was a strip around it.

What made it more special was that there were two. Nori had the matching one in her pocket at the moment. If Aria touched the band on her bracelet, the bracelet Nori had would light up a dark red, like Aria’s ink color. If Nori touched the band on hers, Aria’s bracelet would glow a light pink. It was a way for them to show they were thinking of one another, even when apart. Not that it happened very often, but there were moments.

Nori heard of lamps and pillows that did the same thing, but she couldn’t find any with the same function that were wearable. Being the inventor she is, she decided to make her own with help from her dad and his engineering friends. It would fit snuggly on Aria’s wrist, too. Easy enough to slip on, but not too loose to where it would fall off.

Stepping into the cabin was a nice relief from the cold. Nori had sprung an impromptu mountain trip on Aria for their anniversary, though while it may have seemed sudden to the Octoling, Nori had been planning it for a while, given how there were presents already on the table inside. She’d turn on the electric fireplace, trying to get some warmth into the wooden cabin. The weather was chilly in the city, and in the mountains it was even colder. She took her heavier jacket off and draped it over the couch, rubbing her hands together to ease warmth into them.

“Alright, well, take your pick. Except for this one.” Nori would swipe one of the boxes from the table, holding it in her hands. “This one will be last.” 

There were a few boxes to choose from. The larger one had a modified deluxe deep fryer in it. Nori added a bit more power to it, making it so even large things could be fried in only a moment’s time. It was safe, of course. She tested it to make sure nothing was awry. She didn’t want to give Aria a gift that would hurt her.

The medium sized box had a blanket in it. It was fuzzy, and furthermore, it was weighted. This one she admittedly bought on a whim; it seemed like something Aria would enjoy.

The last, and smaller box, had a bunch of stimulant toys in it. Toys that squished and could be stretched, mostly. She’d even found a miniature squishy E-Liter and threw it in the mix.

“Sounds perfect, babe.” Aria could relate - she hadn’t been playing Ranked for long, but when she did badly, she had a tendency to take long breaks. Especially from Clam Blitz. Fuck Clam Blitz. “Two Seanwiches and some drinks…that’s, like, the perfect date food. And the perfect food in general, honestly. What kind of drink are you gonna get? I might get something, like…really caffeinated. The more energy I’ve got, the better I’ll fight.” 

“It’s totally the perfect food. It’s even better sharing it with someone you love.” Nori loved Seanwiches normally, but Seanwiches with Aria? Instantly better. “Uh... I was thinking about getting like, a sports drink of some kind. Something that gives me electrolytes. I dunno what flavor yet. Maybe red? Or blue?” Nori didn’t know the actual flavor names. She just knew them by color.

“Right, so…training, and no Tower Control for a while?” Aria smiles softly, putting a hand on Nori’s shoulder. “I think it’s gonna help you get back on your game. And…and it’s a nice way for us to spend time together, too. Do you wanna get some Crusty Sean’s first? I could totally go for a Seanwich right now.”

“Yeah, you got it, hun.” Nori likely wasn’t going to play Tower Control for a week at least, maybe even more. “It will be a good way to spend time together. Training is fun.” She’d perk up at the mention of Crusty Sean’s. “Yes, please. I could go for a Seanwich right now too. Maybe we could go to the convenience store afterwards and get some drinks too so we have something while we’re training.”

“Aw. I can…I can relate, though. I’m here for you, though, no matter…no matter what. Do you wanna, like…train together, or play League together? That could help us both feel a bit better, I think.”

“Training sounds fine. If I have to hear the noise of the tower moving back to the center again, I think I’m gonna lose my mind.” It was that kind of day. “I dunno, I’m just off my game lately. Maybe training will help.”

“That, uh…that sounds painful. Are you alright?”

“Oh, I’m fine. Ranked and League have just been kicking my ass lately. I’m like... in a slump I think.”

“It’s a ‘razor scooter to the shin’ kind of week.”

“That’s really cool!” Aria grins, bouncing up and down a bit. “I love how different all the toxins that Poison types produce are. There’s some like Dustox that are, like, super dangerous…some that aren’t so dangerous…and some that are just, like, really weird. Did you know Garbodor can create entirely new poisons all the time? There’s no two that are exactly alike, and only a few have been cataloged, so it’s, like…really hard to get an antidote. Don’t piss off a Garbodor, is what I’m saying.”

“I’m sure you’d make a great professor. Like…I’ve known you for like, ten minutes and I already think you’re one of the smartest people I’ve ever met. I’m glad you liked Unova! Most people do.” Heliodoro nods in return, smiling. “Oh, how big are Aggron? I don’t think I’ve seen one before.” She usually avoids fighting Steel-type trainers if she can…most of her team is Poison types, and Heliodoro can’t quite solo a full team on his own most of the time. Aria giggles quietly as Hydra sneezes - she’s never seen a Hydreigon sneeze before, and the sight is unexpectedly cute. “Hydra scared me a bit earlier, but I’m glad she’s nice. I think a lot of Pokemon might scare people, since they’re almost all Poison types, but most of ‘em are pretty nice. A couple of them are just a bit shy.”

“I think it’s cool myself, poison-types are so different and versatile. One of my friends really relies on the poison status effect for his team too, so it can even be beneficial at times. Poison-types are definitely one of the most intriguing types I’ve studied so far, besides ghost-types.” 

Nori grinned sheepishly. “You think so? I’d really love if it happened, honestly... A lot of the cities in Unova are way bigger than the ones here. I think I got lost at least five times in Castelia when I went.” Nori loved the city itself, though. There was so much to see and do there. “Aggron are normally only six feet eleven inches, but mine is seven feet five inches. She’s the pokemon I’ve had for the longest too...” They had a great bond, and it was why Nori was able to Mega Evolve her with no problems. “Hydra is really intimidating until you get to know her. Most of my team is intimidating, only because they’re all larger than the average height of their species. They’re all gentle giants. They’d never hurt anyone on purpose unless I was being threatened, but I feel like that’s how a lot of Pokemon are with their trainers.” Nori grinned. “I have a poison-type on my team, actually. He’s a shiny Drapion named Scorpio. He really loves to tear up metal with his claws when he can.”

Nori’s curious look goes right over Emiliano’s head, but Amparo notices. “Aria’s sister,” she says. “They haven’t seen each other in about ten years, so it’s not too surprising that Aria hasn’t mentioned her yet. We keep wanting to all meet up again, but everyone’s so busy all the time…” 

“There’s all sorts of great applications for it,” Emiliano smiles. “And some, uh…more out-there ones. Like, it’s no secret that the Octarian military has been trying to mess around with weapons that fire antigravitons. It doesn’t work all that well, though, since no one’s figured out how to keep all the weapons from just floating away. I’ve personally been looking at ways to try to use them to stabilize the domes down here, keep them from collapsing.”

“I’ll have to let you and Aria know when the next one is, then.” He’s just assuming that either Inklings will be less frowned upon in the Valley, or they can just bribe all the guards again. Maybe no one will want to question anyone who’s with Agent 8 after this. And if Nori tells Aria about those bad robot ideas, then Aria will be completely on board… “That’s cool. Some sort of remote control system or something?”

“I’m glad they came here!” Amparo grins. “Aria was telling us about how she wanted to be sure she had a lot of people here. I think that was a great idea, and I know she appreciates every bit of help she got.” She eyes the nearby kettle for a moment, wondering just when Aria is going to get back. She’s only slightly very worried. 

“Aria’s just always loved shellfish. Crab is a staple down here, since it’s really easy to grow them. We’ve got a lot of shrimp too, though! Maybe we can take you to a shellfish bar?” Those usually serve whole shellfish, which Inklings can’t exactly bite into, but Amparo doesn’t know that.

“Ohhhh, okay. I never knew she had a sister.” Nori would say, following Sashimi’s translation. It made her wonder how alike, or how different, they both were from each other. If Sirena was anything like Aria or their parents, Nori would probably get along with her, hopefully.

“Using them as some sort of weapon sounds a bit terrifying, honestly. Like, you’d just float away forever if you got hit by one...” It’d be a shitty way to die, just floating endlessly until the lack of oxygen got to you. “At least it’s good you can use them in more helpful ways.” Nori would add. “It’s an app on my phone, actually. I can press a button and it’ll come to me. It’s really useful for when me and Aria don’t want to get up.”

“I am too, I think they really enjoyed her speech too.” Minus all of the colorful language. “She definitely had a lot of support from a lot of people. It was a powerful moment, and I’m glad I got to witness it myself as well.” Sashimi replied with a smile, though his eyes would wander with Amparo’s to the kettle too. Nori was too engrossed in talking physics and technology with Emiliano to notice, but Sashimi was a bit sharper on perceptive based things than Nori was.

“That sounds good. I really love shrimp. I think I could eat a whole pound if I wanted.” Nori said with a grin. “I’ve never tried to eat a whole shellfish before, I don’t even know if I’d be able to bite through it... maybe I could just... smash it open with my Hydra?” She’s mostly joking, but there’s a part of her that isn’t.

Aria hears the few quiet beeps - the sign of an impending Chee-Z - and she sits on the edge of the bed, eagerly awaiting the sandwich she’d asked for. If Chee-Z was always gonna be this quick, then she and Nori had invented the best home sandwich delivery system of all time. 

“That’s so amazing.” Aria smiles down at Chee-Z, enjoying the scent of sandwich in the air - she was hungrier than she thought. As much of a gremlin as she could be at times, she’d still always take a plate sandwich over a floor sandwich.

“Thanks, Chee-Z!” Aria loves how cute its beeps were - the sound of a robot who knew it had done well. “And thank you, my lady. I suppose you’re the lady of the sandwiches? ‘Cause I feel like you’ve blessed me with this plate.” She gives Nori a gentle kiss on the cheek, setting the plate down on her lap while she waits for the sandwich to cool down - she doesn’t wanna burn her hands. 

“Perfect. It seems like the gormet paninis is a success.” Nori made a mental note of that, along with a rough amount of time it took for the robot to make the sandwich. She’d have to do more thorough tests at a later point. 

“I guess I am. If the rest of the sandwiches go well, we might be promoted to sandwich gods. The paninis seemed to turn out well enough, so I have hopes for the rest of the sandwiches.” Nori grinned as Aria kissed her on the cheek. 

“Alright, Chee-Z. Cheese me.” Nori said, setting a plate down on top of Chee-Z. The robot would beep affirmatively, rolling back into the kitchen. From there, Nori could hear the fridge door open and close once more. After a couple moments, Chee-Z returned, and soon enough, the smell of grilled cheese was in the air. Another few moments later, Chee-Z would use its arm to move the plate down, and a grilled cheese would slide out onto it. Nori reached down and picked the plate up, watching the steam rise off the sandwich.

“This is incredible. I’ve never seen something so beautiful in my life, besides you of course.” Nori looked over at Aria with a smile. “You wanna try out the dorito sandwich now?”
