On March 26, a top game development studio in Korea released an unusual statement about one of its employees: “The woman was mistaken in retweeting a tweet with the word ‘hannam,’” derogatory Korean slang for “disgusting men.” It continued, “In the aftermath of this incident, I promise that we will create preventative measures, including education, in a timely manner.”
This is a very long article, the full text is under the “Keep reading” link. Here’s a summary:
South Korean gamers have been witch hunting game studios for staff who post or like anything feminist-related on their social media profiles
There is or was a radical feminist website called Megalia whose “reputation in South Korea is widely considered antisocial and radical“
Consequences faced by people outed as feminists:
Voice actress Jayeon Kim was fired for owning a shirt that reads “Girls Do Not Need A Prince”
A concept artist who liked a tweet containing “extreme opinions“ was attacked by gamers but not fired since, as her male boss explained, she was “unable to tell the difference between Megalia and feminism in its original definition”
Another artist who liked feminist tweets had her character suspended from the game she was working on and is being “investigated” by the company
Negative review spam on a game by a male dev who retweeted about sexual education
Two more women had their illustration work pulled from the game they worked on
Companies comply with anti-feminist gamers’ demands because said gamers are a large and vocal portion of the customer base
“shaming radical feminists is a lucrative business decision”
I don’t even know what to say. This sounds like such a nightmare. The article is a long read but is worth your time. It also contains a bunch of stats and facts about women’s rights and representation in South Korea.
