i know it shouldn't, but it always surprises just how much men hate women. especially as someone who likes video games, the sheer amount of vitriol that comes from men any time a woman is involved to any degree is mystifying and scary.

furthermore, in the case of 1348 Ex Voto, it really confounds me when gay men start talking about how lesbians "only" have to deal with fetishization and not legitimate violence (as if fetishization isn't inherently violent), when we actively see and hear about how lesbians, especially gender non-conforming ones, have to deal with threats and actions of violence, sexual and otherwise.

And this exists on top of the fact that lesbianism has always had to grapple with the myth of not being real. People in the comments of 1348 Ex Voto posts are talking about historical inaccuracies in regards to the main characters being in a lesbian relationship because, of course, lesbianism did not exist during the European Middle Ages because women have never been underrepresented in history at all.

Good news fellow gamers! There's a game coming out in march about a lesbian knight trying to save her beloved. And she's butch!

The game is called 1348 ex voto, it'll be out on PC and Playstation. Maybe Xbox later.

I don't know if it'll be good, it seems like a short inde game, but I hope they get a tone of support so that we get more games and overall creations about butch women.

this is extremely annoying as a woman who likes video games. because i remember when i was a teen women were very outspoken about the sexualization of women in video games, there was actually significant pushback from women regarding this issue (remember anita sarkeesian?). but now any male can say “uh yeah as a woman and a lesbian i love the objectification of women in video games” and there’s literally nothing women can do about it.

and it’s downright machiavellan because of course most female gamers are straight, because, you know, most women are straight. so most women complaining about this issue are straight women. but then a male comes along and claims to be a lesbian and says it’s fine, and what could a straight woman, who holds privilege over lesbians on the basis of her sexuality, say to that? so that is a quick and easy way to silence something like 99% of women who talk about this issue, and the remaining 1% are lesbians who are never listened to anyway. so now nobody talks about this issue anymore, and it’s literally because men have decided that the issue doesn’t exist.

The difference between real life large breasts and fictional characters’ large breasts is the fictional characters are often created by men, with the specific intent of sexualizing and objectifying them.

Once the male designer has put the character and her beasts out there, I don’t think it’s very useful for us as an audience to try to ignore his intent and frame the character’s breasts as a neutral feature because that downplays the exact problem that OP is pointing out.

IMO the solution is not to insist female characters shouldn’t have large breasts or should have them covered up, but to shame the character designers who sexualize female characters, and encourage designers who portray large breasted characters (and really characters of any and all body types) in a neutral non-male-gaze way. And the creator’s intent is often quite obvious just by looking at the character design.

Like it’s not just a matter of audience perception, creator intent plays an important role too. Just my two cents.

I took this screenshot from a post that I know was meant to be a silly joke post but I'm serious when I say this is why I do not ever want statistics on certain important information (like sexual assault, domestic violence, etc) to either become completely sex-neutral or ignore sex entirely and instead solely focus on "self identification."

I think the screenshot speaks for itself; a hobby that is male dominated now gets to pat itself on the back for doing nothing to make female members of that hobby more comfortable because some of the males have decided to "identify" as female. (Note the language used is "female identifying" players.)

trans women who like "male" hobbies and then act like theyre one of the few women in that hobby.... 🙄 this sounds dramatic, but really, they will never ever know what its like being the only woman at the comic store or at the smash bros tournament or buying minis or whatever it is. ive seen a ton of tw at those places, and they always get treated like how the men do, and are COMPLETELY OBLIVIOUS when actual women are being treated differently.

sexual harassment, being talked over, being talked down to, being treated like a "fake fan"... but the biggest thing is being alone in those spaces. they will just never comprehend growing up a nerdy girl in male dominated hobbies, they cant 😮‍💨
