When Fu was first brought officially to the Cleaner Headquarters, to say he was nervous was a huge understatement.
Being an Ex-Raider only made him feel more out of place as practically everyone knew who he was affiliated with prior to joining. He knew his previous ties wouldn’t sit well under other people’s eyes.
They would mutter to each other questioning how their boss allowed someone like him to join, their concerns evident in their tones and shown by giving him glares. Treating him like a ghostly figure, most cleaners went on with their day not sparing him a greeting let alone acknowledging him.
Fu being anything but confrontational took their silence without a word. He prepared himself to grow used to it being the norm, take orders and stay out of people’s way.
Hii on the other hand, didn’t care of the strange looks others shot at their way. The only thing important was to be given orders and fulfill them. So how some random cleaners thought of Fu and himself was not in the room for priority.
If this was how it was going to be throughout their time here then so be it, he thought. He’ll just have to guide Fu himself.
Yet, that all changed when you came along.
Despite having returned after a mission that took days that left you tired, once you arrived back and heard the news of a new member you were eager to welcome them. Even though fellow supporters tried to warn you that he was an Ex-Raider on a trial basis, you didn’t take their caution to heart.
A new member meant another person was starting a new chapter in their life, and of course you wanted them to feel as welcomed as possible.
So when you stood in front of the boy with a genuine smile, Fu was taken aback.
Were you talking to him? He thought, thinking that you must’ve gotten him mixed up with someone else. But when you had officially introduced yourself and waited for his turn, that thought was thrown out.
“I’m um.. Fu, Fu Orostor.”
Hii from his position in Fu’s hoodie pocket cringed at his voice crack that came from the boy’s nervousness that someone was actually talking directly to him.
“Well Fu, welcome to the cleaners. If you need help with anything just come to me!” You said with sincerity, grabbing his hand to give a light shake.
A sudden voice from another supporter had called out your name, needing some assistance regarding the previous mission.
Giving Fu’s hand a small squeeze you politely excuse yourself, say that you’ll see him around before turning the corner towards the source of the voice. Which left him standing there, the feeling of warmth that your hand left lingering.
Snapping out of his daze and realizing that he was standing in the middle of the hallway, he made his way to wherever his feet lead him. All the while his mind replayed the whole interaction as he stuffed his hands into his pocket, one of them subconsciously tightening its hold on the doll.
That was far from your last interaction with each other as Fu seemed to find your presence more and more as the days passed.
While others gave him the cold shoulder, you were the exact opposite.
During breakfast and lunch you’d invite him to sit next to you, starting conversations. Even though he at first was mostly silent from nervousness, you didn’t mind taking the initiative most of the time.
Eating together then grew to you including him in whatever activities you found yourself doing during the free hours of the day. Whether it was asking him if he wanted to accompany you to run errands or giving him some new sweets, every gesture was important.
Before Fu could fully grasp it, he had already made a friend.
And through it all, Hii was there. Witnessing your every act of kindness and nice words.
He had come to recognize your voice from afar, how you sounded whenever you’d call out to Fu when you saw him or your usual tired but lighthearted good mornings early in the day.
Having his own questions for why you were still so nice despite the circumstances, it was answered when he had finally convinced Fu to ask you why.
Why did you show him so much kindness? Why, knowing his history with the Raiders, you still trusted him?
And to that you responded simply.
“People deserve second chances.” You said, turning your head towards him. “That includes you.”
It wasn’t the answer Hii expected, but he wasn’t surprised. Maybe your kindness showed no bounds.
Sitting in the middle of the backseats you held a small notebook filled with your familiar writings and sketches, directing Enjin who was driving where to go and turn.
Fu, who sat to your right glanced towards the papers, eyes lingering on the page you held open- a detailed drawing of the terrain the car was driving on along with notes.
He’d recalled what you told him your role was, a supporter who specialized with the Ground’s terrain and locations. You had explained that you were mostly assigned on certain missions that required teams to go further into unfamiliar territory.
With your knowledge and notebooks that held all the information you had, your role was crucial during important missions, but along with that came the reality of facing the dangers. You weren’t a fighter by any means, so that’s where usually the Givers stepped in.
“Okay, take left here and by around three miles we’ll get there.”
Closing the book in your hand prompted Fu to tear his gaze away, his attention moving to look out towards the window.
It didn’t take long to reach the destination as everyone put on their masks before stepping outside to stretch.
“Geez, that was pretty cramped.” Riyo said while stretching her back. And she was right, the car was packed with the usual team minus Zanka and Rudo who had business back at the headquarters.
“Before we begin, just be cautious.” You began, catching their attention. “The reported sightings said that the Trash Beasts around here come in packs rather than alone, but other than that I might have an idea of what types of them are roaming around here.”
Enjin nodded towards your direction, then turned to Fu whose posture straightened once he noticed the man was looking at him.
“Fu, your job is to protect her and Tomme. They aren’t specialized in fighting so stay aware.”
“Y-Yes!” Fu quickly replied, a smile forming at finally being given orders.
“Me, Riyo, and Gris will go ahead so be careful back there.”
The group walked along the piles of trash, the sound of polluted winds hitting against metal scraps filling in the eerie silence.
Moving to match Fu’s pace you stood next to him while putting your small notebook in your bag’s pocket.
“Mhm,” he gave a hum in response, glancing at the group who walked in front then back to you.
This was the first time you both were assigned on the same mission together, so it did make Fu a bit more anxious. He didn’t want to mess up anything especially now since you too were here.
Catching onto his uneasiness you tried to reassure him.
“If you’re worried about the Trash Beasts, I’m sure Enjin and Riyo can easily deal with them,” you said, “and if the sightings are correct about them in packs then once we find one it’ll be easy to find the others.”
That wasn’t exactly what Fu was worried about, but he appreciated your attempt to put his worries to rest. Though that was interrupted by a familiar voice that spoke in his head.
“Quit worrying about nothing, you wimp.”
“Sorry!” Fu whisper-yelled which made you raise a brow.
“Nothing!” He clarified, stuffing his hands back into his pocket.
Then Tomme, who was not that far called out to you, needing to ask a question regarding the location the group was in to clarify it in the documents.
Telling him you’d be back you went to her side to help, leaving Fu to keep an eye out on the surroundings.
“Gotta keep an eye out, gotta keep an...” he muttered to himself, determined to not let Enjin or his orders down.
“You gonna keep muttering to yourself till you go crazy?”
“No I just- she’s here so I can’t risk failing,” Fu said as he took out the doll from his pocket.
“She’s just a girl, there’s nothing to be paranoid about, you moron.”
“Maybe you’re right..” Fu sulked, posture lowering just a little. “But still..”
Throughout their time with the Cleaners, Hii himself had never directly interacted with you. Yes, Fu had told you about his vital instrument and how Hii- the doll- can speak to him, but you never once had actually met him while he possessed Fu’s body.
There were a few times you tried to talk to the doll with Fu telling you what Hii said in response, but there really was a talking barrier.
Back with Fu, he heard the doll sigh.
“Just pay attention and don’t worry about the small details before a-”
Almost on cue they both heard you shout.
Quickly looking back they saw you push the supporter out of the way as a Trash Beast emerged suddenly from ground followed by many more nearby.
You mentally cursed at yourself when seeing that you were in direct line of attack with the creature. It all felt like a blur. One moment you were talking with Tomme and the next here you were completely vulnerable.
Something had felt wrong while you were walking beside her and when the ground visibly shook you figured out why everyone hadn’t spotted any Trash Beasts yet- it’s because they preyed underground rather than on the surface.
You were ready to feel a harsh impact followed by intense pain, but that never came.
Instead you felt a gush of wind followed by a pair of arms holding you by your legs and torso and a loud crunch of metal being broken the next second.
Blinking a few times you snapped out of your shock to see the Trash Beast that would’ve once gravely injured you now a pile of pummeled trash.
Turning to see who held you, your eyes slightly widened.
“Fu!,” but the moment his name left your mouth, you knew something was off. His hold felt a bit too secure, hair now wisp back as a wide grin replaced his once timid features.
His tone was one of amusement as he diverted his eyes to another Trash Beast that hurled itself towards you both as your hands found its way to clutch at his hoodie with wide eyes.
Having his arms occupied by holding you, it seemed like it was no problem for him as with a swift strong kick it sent the Beast flying towards its own kind.
In a blink that threat was gone, but there were more to come as more rose from the ground.
Tearing your gaze to look at him, it was in that instant that it clicked. The raw power, the smug grin, changed marking around his eyes-
The next minute ended as quick as it began, filled with sounds of metal being crushed and torn caused by the person holding you through it all.
Once all of the Trash Beasts were dealt with both by the Givers and Hii, everything seemed to calm down as he finally set you down.
He expected for you to grow anxious just by the sight of mangled Trash Beasts caused by him, but what you actually did caught him completely off guard.
Once you remembered that you were indeed still alive after all of that, your hands quickly went to clasp his own.
You thanked him over and over again, amazed by how he reacted so quickly and dealt with all of them without any trouble with you in his hold.
Never once was Hii thanked for anything he did during other previous missions so this was completely new to him. Someone actually showing him gratitude with such sincerity in their eyes.
“I mean it, thank you.” Just like you did with Fu, you gave Hii’s hands a soft squeeze.
In that moment he felt his chest come over with a warm sensation. Quickly he retracted his hands, keeping them busy by slicking his hair back that was messed up from the fight.
“Whatever. Pretty dumb to throw yourself directly in the Beast's line of attack.”
He tried to deflect, pointing out how you threw yourself in harm's way to save Tomme.
“Well, if it meant Tomme wasn’t hurt,” you turned to see Gris who was checking up on Tomme who was reassuring him, “then it’s okay.”
Hii sighed, “It only turned out okay because I stepped in just in time. Try not to do something dumb next time.”
You gave him a firm nod thanking him once again as Enjin called out to everyone.
“Seems like everything’s been dealt with, that’s the mission. Let’s get back before it gets dark,” he looked at you, “you got the way back right?”
You agreed, beginning to take out your small notebook. While everyone headed back to the vehicle, you spoke to Hii one last time before walking.
“You were amazing out there.”
And with that, you turned your heel catching up with the other supporters.
For a few seconds he didn’t move, gaze lingering on your form. You had left before he could even say anything, leaving him with your compliment.
Ever since then, Fu got assigned to accompany you more during missions. As Semiu put it, since you specialized with missions that were more farther away with the use of your skills, meant the more dangerous it was. So now with Fu (Hii) by your side, he’d be able to give you and the other supporters more protection.
And with that change meant the more time you spent together.
It became like a routine, you’d choose the seat next to him in the car and when facing the dangers Fu would switch with Hii to deal with any monster that came near the supporters' way.
You never failed to always compliment him every time he saved you or a fellow supporter, praising his strength and mentioning how cool he looked, recalling how he’d demolish a Trash beast in the matter of a second.
He was still completely new to this sort of affection and didn’t know how to respond other than brushing it off when the warm feeling in his chest returned every time. What he felt was something foreign that he himself couldn’t fully understand.
He couldn’t translate it in words, so it showed in his actions.
During missions he was always aware of where you were in case if anything were to come, standing by your side just a bit more closer, putting more strength into crushing Trash Beasts that tried to attack you, carrying you in his arms when the terrain grew too dangerous- with him by your side your protection was guaranteed.
It was apparent to everyone else that the cursed doll had grown feelings for you. Falling hard.
If his actions during missions wasn’t enough proof, then the coat of pink that would appear on his cheeks after hearing your one of many compliments added onto it.
When Hii finally came to the realization of what the feeling in his chest that came every time you were near was, he was in total denial.
Too engulfed in his pride, he swore that he held absolutely no feelings for you, refusing to come to terms with the truth.
Every time that feeling returned when you were close, he’d become dismissive and arrogant, but it took more than that to drive you away.
You still remained your kind self, his smart remarks not having an effect on you. Yet as you didn’t pay any mind to that, you also grew oblivious to the obvious signs. Summing up his protective behavior during missions as coming from a place of care.
Having grown closer, Fu would entrust you with the doll. Letting you carry it around when walking together as you spoke to the both of them. Sure you couldn’t hear Hii when he was in that form, but Fu had no problem relaying what he said to you.
Hii was still his usual self in his doll form of course, but now he wasn’t as silent compared to when he and Fu first joined the cleaners on a trial basis.
Valentine’s Day was coming up tomorrow, evident by the decorations you and other Cleaners had been putting up the past few days.
Asking Fu if he’d like to help, the boy took up the offer. Holding a box filled with various types of decorations he wandered the halls finding rooms that weren’t already decorated as Hii stayed in his pocket.
If the doll had eyes in that form he’d want to roll them from the amount of sappy things he’d heard from the people around the headquarters. All talking about giving their partners a special gift for the holiday, plans about dinners, and more that he had lost track of.
And even though you’d pop up in his mind, he pushed the thought of getting you something out of the way. He knew that if he gave you a gift on the day that was literally surrounded by love, then you’ll catch on and put the pieces together.
So being too embarrassed he didn’t plan on doing anything, firm on just keeping it silent like he had been doing before.
But that changed when he overheard something when Fu passed a certain room. Someone mentioning your name and saying something that caught Hii’s attention,
Fu complied with the sudden order, a bit confused as he stayed still near the door. They weren’t noticeable, but there was just enough space for Hii to catch a glimpse in his doll form.
He recognized one of them, a supporter who had previously gone on a mission with you, as the person then mentioned your name to someone else.
“She’s pretty cute isn’t she? I’ve been thinking about asking her out on Valentine’s Day. It’ll be all romantic y’know.”
“You think she’ll say yes?” The person whom the supporter was talking to asked.
“I’m sure she will. She’s too nice to turn anyone down.” They said with such confidence.
Hii stayed silent as Fu whispered out to him, but after a few seconds he finally spoke. An order.
There stood Hii, who now was in control, walking around the nearest town with fists clenched.
After hearing what that supporter said back at the headquarters, it snapped something inside of him.
Even though he was very prideful there was no way in hell that he’d let a random person just ask you out right in front of him while doing nothing about it.
Roaming past the stores, none of them caught his attention. He thought of what to give you, but there wasn’t anything that stood out to him.
Groaning, he had to resort to thinking back to what those sappy Cleaners were mentioning about giving their partners for an idea.
“This is gonna take forever.” He said to himself as he noticed other people rushing around also getting a late gift for their own partners.
After walking around for a few more minutes he passed by a flower shop, the ones being displayed at the front all artificially made. It was that sight that jogged something in his memory.
He remembered you talking about flowers once when coming across a shop similar to this kind when Fu tagged along to run errands with you.
You’d mentioned that you only ever saw actual real flowers once or twice before, claiming that even though the artificial ones were still beautiful, there was just something about real ones that made them so much more special. After all, it was quite rare to buy them here down on the ground.
Ending the memory, Hii looked down at the display of fake flowers. He finally thought of the right gift.
The day finally came as the headquarters was filled with Cleaners giving each other gifts, whether it was for friends or partners.
Being switched again, Hii walked through the halls not being able to find you for the past few minutes. He knew that you were most likely busy with making sure everything was going well which meant you could be anywhere in the building.
His hand held its usual strong grip around the base of a bouquet of flowers, its colors being ones of your favorite.
He didn’t know much about flowers and could’ve just picked a random set to get it over with quickly, but he had remembered that you had mentioned your favorite color a few instances.
Putting two and two together, he chose the bouquet he thought you’d like, imagining what your reaction might be for a split second.
Growing irritated by the amount of people filling the halls and making it more difficult to get through, he tried to pass by without damaging the flowers.
Thankfully it had started to clear out a bit more by the end as the next hallway was thankfully empty, but no signs of you.
Groaning to himself he knew that it would’ve been a better idea to have given you the gift earlier in the morning. But he knew that you were most likely going to be occupied with everyone. He could only hope that the Supporter from earlier didn’t beat him in finding you first.
Not really having a plan, he intended to give you the flowers and try not make a big deal out of it. He’ll give you the flowers and hope that the random Supporter would take that as a sign to stay away from you.
He wouldn’t flat out confess his feelings for you in a very romantic manner, it’s Hii after all. But even if he was still in denial despite having gone out of his way to get something special for you, he couldn’t ignore the way his heart was practically drumming inside of his chest. He was never one to be nervous or grow anxious, that was Fu’s job after all, was what he thought to himself.
Still walking around there was no sign of you. Mentally cursing, Hii hated how all of the hallways looked so similar and easy to get lost in. Normally you would lead the way as Fu would trail right beside you, but since you weren’t here that left Hii all by himself to figure out the layout.
Becoming tired of passing by the same set of doors he had seen earlier, he took a stern and sharp turn around the next corner. Though instead of being met with another long pathway, there was a loud thump as his body knocked into someone else’s.
“Watch where you’re going-!”
Wait, that was your voice.
“..oh, it’s you! Sorry Hii, I must’ve not seen where I was walking.” You apologized again as Hii felt his heart pick up pace once he realized that it was you.
“You might be just as clueless as Fu.” He teased.
Noticing the bouquet of flowers he was holding, it piqued your interest. “Did someone give you those?”
Looking down at the flowers, what he had previously planned to say at this moment disappeared in an instant.
“What- no these aren’t,” he tried to find the words, “No one gave these, actually I- Nevermind.”
Never once did Hii think that he would find himself blabbering like Fu always did. Gathering his usual prideful composure he handed the bouquet into your hands.
“Don’t think too much about it, okay? I don’t need you to get all gushy and everything.”
Trying to play it off he was about to tease you more until he saw how your smile couldn’t help but get bigger as you admired the flowers in your hold.
“Hii they’re..” you didn’t know what to say. Looking at the flowers then back up to him, you quickly moved to bring him into a hug.
Surprised, Hii adjusted his stance to make sure the both of them didn't fall over.
“What did I say about getting all gushy!” He tried to act annoyed, but his facade almost cracked when your arms tightened their hold around his shoulders.
You pulled a bit back to face him, unaware that your face was a bit too close to his own.
“I wasn’t expecting to get anything today,” you laughed, “so what made you get me these?”
“Like I said, don’t think much of it.”
Hii wasn’t about to say that he got you the gift because he got jealous of a guy wanting to shoot his shot in asking you out. So he tried to give vague answers.
Ending the hug you held the bouquet of flowers with the same big genuine smile, until you took a closer look.
“Wait, these are real!” You gasped, raising a hand to softly touch at the petals, “You got actual flowers!”
“It was pain since there were barely any around, but I have my ways.” Hii said after recalling how long he had been looking around for them.
“I got to put these in water,” you said quickly, wanting to tend to them as soon as possible.
Taking that as his cue to leave he was about to switch back since he already did what he came here for, but before he could he saw you quickly lean in and felt something soft pressed against his cheek.
When it registered to him what you did as you pulled away, his hand shot up to his cheek where you kissed it.
“What was that for!” He said flustered.
You smiled at him as the words were caught in his throat. “I’ll be back, I need to put these in a vase.” And with that you left in a bit of a hurry so that you’d return back quickly.
After you were out of his line of sight, he sighed as he ran his hand through his hair.
When faced against Trash Beasts or enemies, Hii never once wavered and loved the thrill that came along with the risks. Weaknesses was not something he had.
But ever since you came, it seemed like he grew to have one.
“..Annoying.” Hii huffed out.
The cursed doll had already fallen for you. Quite hard.
