ways to say "i love you" - drabble 2 (sonshadamy)
22. Muffled, from the other side of the door + sonshadamy (requested by @oddlyunaware)
The only sound is his partners' breathing.
It's dark. Long past time for him to be asleep. It'd been a long day, and a hard battle. The only reason they'd gotten away safely was because of Shadow. The dark hedgehog was on the couch, face slack with sleep. The Ultimate Lifeform didn't need sleep, not as often as regular Mobians, but he'd drained himself when he teleported Sonic and Amy -- without a chaos emerald. As a show of thanks, they'd let him take the couch. (Well, forced, seeing as Shadow had tried to deny it.)
Amy slept a few feet away, wrapped up in one of the two sleeping bags they'd found in the safehouse. She'd been the one to find them, actually. As long as Sonic had known her, the pink hedgehog had a way of knowing where to look for things.
Sonic laid in his bag, silently watching his companions sleep, as he had been for the last couple of hours. Sleep evaded him, and whenever he did start to drift of, the memory of a scared shout and a flash of orange jerked him awake again.
The three of them had discussed it already. Rest, try to sleep, regroup. They'll make a rescue plan in the morning, when they've gotten their energy back. Sonic wasn't happy about it, but he'd agreed. Tails was tough, and smart. He wasn't some damsel in distress, and he wasn't a little kid anymore. He could handle himself. Was probably breaking himself out right now, and hacking Eggman's network while he was at it.
That's what Sonic had been trying to tell himself.
Then he'd gotten the photo.
Tails, his best friend, unconscious, the fur under one of his ears matted with blood.
Next came a location, and a simple text.
That was ten minutes ago.
Sonic knew what the doctor was doing. Similarly, he knew what he had to do.
Shads and Amy were gonna kill him when they woke up.
Slowly, Sonic got up. He ignored the way his joints ached and moved as silently as possible through the small room, stooping down next to the front door to pull on his shoes. He thought while he slipped them on. He could wake Amy. Tell her what was going on. Let her know what he was doing. He didn't know if he even could wake Shadow, with how exhausted he'd been after the chaos control earlier.
But he'd been the only one to receive the message. It wasn't a group text, and he hadn't heard Amy's or Shadow's communicators buzz. The Doctor did things with intention. The message was clear: come alone.
Sonic pressed his lips together and stood. He noiselessly backtracked back into the room and placed his phone down on the end table by the couch. That way, when Amy or Shadow woke up, they could look and find where he'd gone.
He took one last look at their sleeping faces, then silently left, taking care to close the door without a sound. He stared at the old wood for a moment, hand resting on the knob. "I love you," he whispered.
Then he was gone, too fast to hear the door opening behind him.
