So finally saw Suzume in theaters... I understand some people are of the opinion that Your Name is still the best Makoto Shinkai film even after it's release. I get that people have various opinions, even if their opinion is wrong...

ANYWAY

Please support this absolutely stunning film during its US release, you'll regret missing it on the big screen.

Actually I’m already so frustrated at all the anime dudes saying Suzume is “the same as Shinkai’s last two movies” “It’s just another girl meets boy romance” or that “Shinkai only does one thing”.

First of all, his last three movies could not be more different thematically, and all of them feature very different relationships and characters. Just because they feature romances and weather phenomena does not mean the content or the narrative arc of these films are the same.

Second of all, even if they were, the people I’ve heard say this keep up with things like marvel, dragon ball, and each new battle shonen of the season. Clearly Shinkai being “repetitive” is not even an issue even if he was. Y’all like the same thing when it’s action or adventure media.

Which brings me to third of all, the way these fans inherently value action media and take time to analyze each corporately churned out film in intense detail but write off Shinkai just comes across as being unaware of their own preferences. Just say you don’t personally like romance films, there’s nothing wrong with that, I promise. It doesn’t mean it is a bad film. They’re trying to critique art but being completely informed by their own personal bias. Imo a personal bias which, once one tries to intellectualize it, reveals itself as a personal bias which on some level subconsciously is informed by the patriarchal background noise of our society which insists stereotypically masculine interests/media/art be taken seriously, while stereotypically feminine interests/media/art (here the romance genre) are more easily written off.

Fourth of all, you are not cooler for disliking a popular director.

Fifth of all, it’s not even girl meets boy this time. It’s girl meets chair.

suzume was so damn pretty. and I’m a sucker for a movie that talks about mother daughter relationships, community, legacy, fear of the future, loneliness, life and death, and healing your inner child all while looking absolutely stunning with a little glimmer of romance. gosh. more of that pls

So I just keep thinking about the movie

And how Daijin just wanted to be with Suzume cause he thought he loved her, and it just hurts my heart so much when she tells him she doesn't want to see him, and he just goes "Suzume doesn't love me...", and turns back into a skinny cat and walks away.

As a major cat lover and a cat owner, it breaks my heart and I hope my cats know I love them so much. :(

Things I have learned having watched Suzume (I thought this was gonna be a funny no spoilers thing but then my third point has a rant that is very spoiler-y so uh SPOILERS)

Always remember to shut and lock your doors

Don’t be mean to cats

Makoto Shinkai will never give me a couple kiss and I know that’s not the point of any of these movies and you need not have a kiss to demonstrate affection or love and I know the whole thing of this movie was more about her self-actualisation and emotional closure from her mother’s death disguised as a action romance but GODDAMMIT SHE KISSED THE CHAIR AT LEAST TWICE. SHE TRUE LOVE KISSED HIM AWAKE. LIKE LITERALLY THAT IS WHAT HAPPENED. He’s also at least 4 years older than her. So maybe that’s why. She’s seemingly in her second year high school which covers the whole 16-17 range and he’s done 4 years of University so supposing he was 18 when he graduated high school, he’s 22-23 years old. Not a bad age gap for once she graduates BUT NONETHELESS A GAP. And he completely fell in love with her while he was a chair. Bc Suzume was out here being a badass. And she kissed him twice awake. Saving him twice with LITERAL TRUE LOVE’S KISS.

Anyway I lost track of wtf I was saying with that last point so: it was a very beautiful film, as is Shinkai’s standard, and actually a very well-rounded and well-paced film. Weathering with You has a distinct drag in the middle. In terms of pacing and story structure, Suzume probably follows Kimi no Na Wa, which is a classic at this point… but has a bit more definitive ending for the main couple while KNNW is a bit more ambiguous.

I enjoyed it. Soundtrack slapped. You will be singing the main theme afterward.

That is the closest I have seen ANYONE get to nailing that Miyazaki quote about the truest expression of love being two people mutually inspiring each other to live since Pacific Rim came out AND I AM NOT KIDDING!!

suzume was so good…it’s about abandoned places overwhelmed by the feeling of being abandoned, fit to bursting. it’s about remembering the people who once inhabited those places, remembering what those places once meant to them, and then letting go. it’s about the kindness of ordinary, everyday people. it’s about wanting to fight fate for the sake of loved ones. and most of all, it’s about a girl in love with a chair. in love with what it represents and the memories it holds, but also literally in love with it. what’s not to love
