This past week, I’ve had about four to five cups of coffee per day. And this is mainly because I just got to college and I don’t have any friends yet and constantly brewing coffee in my dorm room gives me something to do with my time. 

My Medieval Europe professor (who is totally awesome, btw) told me that if I take a summer of intensive Latin at Berkeley (which my school will probably fund), and I take a semester of one-on-one ancient document reading with him, then the summer between my junior and senior year, I can do honors history or medieval studies thesis work in a medieval town in Catalonia. I’m so thrilled by that prospect that I begged my roommate (a classics major) to sell me her old AP Latin: Virgil textbooks. 

I play softball, and I’m ridiculously superstitious about it. For example, when I step out of the batter’s box to take practice swings between pitches, I have to make a clicking sound when the bat goes through the hitting plane because one time I did and I hit three homeruns in a day. 

My school had this thing for freshmen called First Collection. We light candles and sing the alma mater and then everyone’s supposed to transport their lit candle back to the front door of the dorm they live in. If your candle goes out before you get there, rumor is you won’t graduate in four years. I live in a dorm all the way across campus from the amphitheater, and my candle went out like five times and I just gave up on life. It was a sad day. 

I took my first Tae Kwon Do class today. It’s pretty different from the style of kung fu I’m used to practicing - it’s way more staccato and aggressive and vocal, but I had a great time. I’m trying out Aikido and Capoeria later this week too. And weirdly enough, bellydancing. 

I downloaded “Philosophy and Watchmen: The Rorschach Test” today. It’s a fascinating read, definitely recommend. 

I ran the library printer out of toner this morning and for about an hour, everyone in the general vicinity hated me. 

Yesterday, my brother answered a question about Lazarus for the biblical unit of his English class. No one else knew the answer. I was shocked - my family’s hardly religious, and I know for certain he’s never picked up the Bible once in his life. He confessed to me he only knew the answer because of the Lazarus Pit that Ra’s Al Ghul uses (and later, Jason Todd is resurrected in) in Batman comics. I was so proud.

My friend Clayton inspired me to post fun facts on my door every day. Today’s fun fact(s): “Star Trek is 47 years old today!” and “Charles Darwin and Abe Lincoln were born on the same day—Feb. 12, 1809.”

There are at least six weapons in my dorm room right now. My roommate fences, so she has three swords—epee, rapier, and foil. She also has a Swiss Army knife. I have a broadsword, a long staff, and a light saber.

To describe even one moment of this movie as a “kick” would be obscene. It evokes the lives of African-American slaves as the nightmare it was, with violence spun into a daily fabric of brutality, one that’s neither heightened nor exaggerated, just scarily real. Forget the earnest and epochal (but, in hindsight, not really raw enough) TV mini-series Roots, forget the baroque exploitation of Mandingo, and — despite the overstated accolades it received — forget Django. As a drama of the slave experience, 12 Years a Slave renders them all irrelevant. It is a new movie landmark of cruelty and transcendence.

12 Years a Slave lets us stare at the primal sin of America with open eyes, and at moments it is hard to watch, yet it’s a movie of such humanity and grace that at every moment, you feel you’re seeing something essential. It is Chiwetel Ejiofor’s extraordinary performance that holds the movie together, and that allows us to watch it without blinking. He plays Solomon with a powerful inner strength, yet he never soft-pedals the silent nightmare that is Solomon’s daily existence. The ultimate cruelty he’s subjected to isn’t the beatings or the humiliation. It is that he is ripped from his family, blockaded away from all that he is. - Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly (x)
