something i don’t think is talked about enough in the dps community is the implied closeness and longevity of Neil and Charlie’s friendship.
sure, in the movie Charlie seemed to interact one on one more with Knox, but the way he interacts with Neil—like it’s a brotherly second nature, like everything is an inside joke—is what gets me. the exchanged glances and smirks, the witty remarks and answers, the way he was the only other poet to ever say a word to Neil’s father, the way Charlie is the one to break the news to Todd, and (in my mind) possibly the first poet to find out.
Neil and Charlie have definitely been good friends since the beginning of their time at Hellton, if not beforehand as well. it’s truly unsurprising with how well their energies align (they match each others’ freak), being outgoing and adventurous.
Charlie is even the first one to agree to Neil’s proposal of bringing back the Dead Poets Society, which could be attributed to his adventurous and hedonistic character, but i think it’s more than that.
The urge to mourn lost cultures and empires. For your heart to ache every time you think of how many dialects are no longer spoken. How many ancient cities are now abandoned. How many people lived full and happy lives before you.
The urge to feel melancholy for the millions that lost brothers in death, that watched the world around them fall apart, that thanked the skies for crying with them.
The urge to want to play a part in history but in the same moment having a fear of dying and inevitably being forgotten, like those who came before you.

Charlie: So… I’ve seen you’ve been spending a lot of time with Todd recently.
Neil : No, Charlie, it's not what it looks like, I swear.
Charlie: Oh really? So no reason for me to be jealous?
Neil : No! You’re the only one for me.
Charlie: Is that so?
Neil : I promise! Todd and I are just dating, okay? He's my partner.
Charlie: So there are no best-friends-feelings involved?
Neil : You are still my one and only best friend! He's just the love of my life, nothing more!
Charlie: But I’m still the platonic love of your life, right?
Neil : Of course bro!
Charlie: Bro...

we really need to appreciate dead poets society as a movie more. sometimes I wish I could just watch it for the first time again just to experience those emotions again. i mean it makes you think about how fine the line between dreaming and realism is, the toxicity of generational cycles and the way societal norms, pressure and expectations can change the life of a person. it broke the norms of those times by making the main male characters genuinely nice and interesting people who enjoy activities like acting, reading and writing poetry (what were generally seen as girls' pursuits) and even portrayed the effects of mental health issues on a person (neil's depression and todd's anxiety). but that's the beauty of this movie... even 35 years after it's release, it stands the test of time, and people all over the world are still connecting over this movie and there are plenty of dps edits and playlists and fan-made content to this day.
