The Grand Budapest Hotel (2014)
1. American Idiot
The main character is introduced. He is full of rage and angst, he suffers from extreme anxiety, he hates the town he lives in, he is cynical about everything. Let’s just call him John.
2. Jesus of Suburbia
John hates the town he grew up in, because he’s been stuck there his whole life. He hate his dad because he is abusive, and he love’s his mother but she won’t leave his dad because they’re in love. John decides to leave. He finally gets out of the shitty town he grew up in and moves to a big city.
3. Holiday
John is finally gone, and he loves it. He finally feels free and happy. He’s believes this is the beginning to a new happier life.
4. Boulevard of Broken Dreams
After a while of everything seeming perfect, John realizes he is lonely. He’s living on the streets with nothing to his name. He has no family, no money, no friends. Things are starting to get really shitty and depressing again.
5. Are We The Waiting
John starts to second guess his decision, and wonders if things will ever get better again, or if he’ll just live on the streets for the rest of his life.
6. St. Jimmy
Just when John wants to give up, he meets Jimmy (St. Jimmy). He’s this great guy, rebellious just life John and the kind of person John needed to feel needed. Jimmy is, in simple terms, a badass. John follows in his footsteps.
7. Give Me Novacaine
John has a friend now, but he still suffers from extreme anxiety. To take the edge off, Jimmy brings drugs into John’s life. He starts out small but gradually moves to harder things. Of course, this starts his addiction.
8. She’s a Rebel
John meets a girl. This is the girl of his dreams, and he’s starting to fall in love. She’s also this rebellious figure, and she is perfect for him. They begin to date, and everything seems to be going perfectly for John, in his mind.
9. Extraordinary Girl
John can’t control his addiction, and it’s starting to hurt the girl he loves. She is stressed and he is also, but he can’t break his drug addiction. Lots or arguing occurs and they start to pull apart, yet stay together.
10. Letterbomb
The girl John loves decides to leave him. She writes a letter, leaves it with John, and just leaves. The letter states many important things. The main one is: “The St. Jimmy is a figment of your father’s rage and your mother’s love, and you’re the idiot america.” So Jimmy was never real, he was just something John created to give meaning to his life. John got himself into drugs, he followed his own footsteps, and they just took him the wrong way. Now he’s alone. No Jimmy. No girl.
11. Wake Me Up When September Ends
Just when everything goes to shit for John, he learns that his dad has passed away. John left his family out of anger, and never spoke to them after he left, and then learns that his dad is gone.
12. Homecoming
John is dealing with the death of his father and the feelings of being lonely. He gives up the drugs, and he finally decides to go home. His family greets him happily, but he still feels empty without a dad.
13. Whatsername
Everything is behind John now, and that’s good. Except for the girl that he loved (Whatsername). He realizes how he pushed her away, and he tries to remember her but he can’t, and it’s killing him. He can’t remember her, but he can remember how she made him feel, and he realizes he fucked everything up with his decisions and has to deal with that for the rest of his life.
That’s the story this album tells.
Wake me up when September ends is actually about the singer of green day. When he was a child, his father died, and at the funeral, he couldn’t handle it, and ran home and locked himself in his room. When his mom came to comfort him, all he said was “wake me up when September ends…”
It's a double meaning. Nearly every song on this album has a double meaning. Each is an amazing song on its own, with self-sufficient meaning. However, when combined, the entire story comes together.
