Steve Ditko’s illustrations of WWF superstars for the WWF tie in comics. Steve Ditko is best known as the co-creator of Dr. Strange and Spider-Man.Â
Working on licensed comics is usually a sign of a loser in the comics world, however, Ditko requested to work on WWF licensed comics personally. Ditko refused to work on any comic that did not follow his strong, black and white, Manichean moral sense of what constituted a hero, something he did even when he was hungry and needed work in the early 1990s. Ditko was the only Marvel artist who truly loved wrestling, with its’ “black and white” heroes and villains that were either good or evil, which fit perfectly with his worldview.
Ditko was often asked how he squared his belief that heroes should have a rock-solid moral certainty and incorruptibility with his creation of Spider-Man, who was well known for being vulnerable, human, and at times uncertain of what to do. Ditko said “well, when I created him, he was a teenager and still learning.”Â
