i cant express it properly but the thing i love about surviving romance and pyramid game and other webtoons with all female casts is it's one of the few times i see distinct personalities in female characters that don't just involve how they interact with a male lead. granted, neither shows have male leads, with surviving romance having only two recognizable boys in the cast but my point is it allows writers to show their creative freedom without limiting the amount of personality they can give to a certain character.
harin is downright terrible, she's perpetrating a system that constantly incurs abuse and suffering for her classmates as a depiction of social class. huisu is the epitome of someone at the verge of falling apart, she's depressed, and those actions had a hand in taking her to where she is now. suji is cruel, in a way that says she would have turned a blind eye to everything so long as she wasn't harmed, her actions were selfish and her choices were for herself and those she cared about only.
but they also showcase how relationships between them explored their characters and expanded on their personalities, rather than just having them attached to the main character like some lackey.
huisu had lost hope, she'd given up on life and living and realized she was stuck in a cycle meant to prey on her suffering and no longer had the will to even try to fight back. dying was the same thing everyday, she'd wake up the next day anyway. but the unknown extra convinced her otherwise, she became the point of hope that huisu aspired to become. she became one of suji's reasons to live and then seeing her die right in front of her eyes gave her the resiliency to do whatever she could to fight back and see her again.
suji was cruel, she was calculative and intelligent and she knew what she was doing more than anything. she found a hole within harin's system and chose to plug it in with herself, not caring for the consequences it may have on others. but as you can see, she turned her motives around. jaeun convinced her that the only way to solve the pyramid game is to destroy it completely, and playing innocent to all the wrongdoings made her no different from harin herself. and although she remains as calculative and unforgiving as she was, suji fights against the game now, she refuses to become a pawn for everyone else's entertainment, even if it means shaking the happy class down to its core.
eunjeong was willing to do so much to protect yerim's reputation. shinbi kept her head held high despite the implications of her best friend's death. hell, even rina, who has an actual love interest, was portrayed so well in how she broke the stereotype in female roles. doa seo witnesses and has a hand in the creation of the pyramid game, yet her logic doesn't let her fight it.
there are sooo many fucking ways to show nuance in female characters other than making them candies. let them be evil. let them be cruel. let them be something more than a pretty face.

“What did they do this time?” of course you knew Harin or one of her minions were behind this, who else would it be? You may try staying calm, but whenever you see jaeun hurt like this you start developing murderous tendencies, it's not even funny anymore, you´ll end up hurting anyone who dares to even look at her the wrong way. You try moving your arm away from her to try and recollect yourself but she grabs it hearing her whimper softly “Please don't leave me too..” and your heart breaks at that. What could she have done so wrong in her past life to be suffering this much, you'll never understand. “Don't worry, I'm not going anywhere.” you say as you lay down next to her, giving her space in case it's too much for her. Your arms are open, inviting her in, hoping she´ll trust you enough to let all her worries out in your arms.
She slowly turns around, peeping out of the blanket she wrapped herself in, trying to imitate your warmth from when she let you hold her on rare occasions. She looks up to you, eyes glassy. You can tell she's on the edge, she just needs a final push to let it all out. And you're there to catch her. You take the blanket off her body and wrap her into your arms, putting her head in the crook of your neck. You hold her head, playing with her hair slowly “It's okay now. You're safe with me, you don't have to hide.” You feel her relax in your arms, seconds before hugging you back and gripping on the back of your hoodie like her life depended on it. She tried opening her mouth to speak but only managed to let out a sob before you felt her warm tears on your neck.
You simply lay in bed with Jaeun in your arms, whispering quiet affirmations into her ear from time to time. After some minutes of her sobbing, you feel her breathing calm down. You carefully try moving away a little so you could look into her eyes. “Feel any better baby?” She looks at you, eyes still glassy, before opening her mouth muttering out a soft “I love you so much.” before giving you a soft peck on the cheek. You gently put your hand on hers, trying to provide her with whatever comfort you can. “Nothing can happen to you while you´re with me. I won't allow it.”
There isn't much you can do to help her at school, but you´ll always be her safe space, the person she can always come to. You´re her home.
