From Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom, Suzy showed up as a mirror to me. I saw myself for the first time in a character from a movie. Imagine me at the time: 18/19 year old me, a girl from Mexico City living in Alberta dealing with crippling depression. It was amazing to see a girl being portrayed as angry as she was. It was never a tantrum. It was anger and frustration because it’s all she’s been taught. She doesn’t know how to communicate because no one talks to her and no one asks what’s wrong. They just assume. They assume you’re just off and you’re “the troubled child”. So they just distance themselves because we’re unpredictable to them.
Trauma is a hell of a thing. Especially as a lil kid. You really don’t understand why or what is happening. We’re all troubled children in some way but thankfully we have learnt to control our emotions and actions.
