Memories
The memories of those I love Are covered in the soft glow Of sunshine on Lazy Sunday mornings, Surrounded in the oceans Of our sheets. They are fogged by The hazy chain smoke Of late night conversations And stale ashes. They are drunken; With sips of wine And slurred confessions Of love and grand ideas, Whispered in the dark. They are drenched in the sweat Of passionate exchanges And tangled limbs. I kiss the lips of my memories And I taste only sweetness.
Head is splitting. Old mantras return. I indulged my demons and let my soul suffer. Whispers of doubt and I am shattered.
I'll never get better. I don't want to get better. What's the use in getting better?
Blood has clotted. New skin is forming, I indulged my mind and let my body suffer. Wounds are healing and scars await to be hidden.
I need to get better. I should be getting better. Why am I not better?
The slate has been wiped clean. New thoughts are forming. I indulged my heart and let my body rest. Wonders of the future and healing lie ahead.
I can get better. I will get better. When did things get so much better?
Roses
I had roses blooming In the palms of my hands And I left trails of petals Behind me in my wake
I forgot of the thorns And let the flowers bloom I let the feeding bees be And held beauty
But the thorns began to prick And the bees began to sting And I could feel the blossoms Wilt within my fingertips
But with my hands pierced And my skin weeping I held onto beauty And let the roses bloom
How are you so amazing?
You unlocked my chest and found my hidden jewels, the unmarked gold. You have spilled my treasures into the sun for all to see, where they glitter and shine and illuminate the mind of all my worth. You dug your hands into the soil and now I am unearthed.
We had a chance to see the Oregon sunset, but fate would not have it. You’ve offered me the Grand Canyon and the grasses of Oklahoma, and it makes me wonder if you’d offer me the whole world, if it were yours to give.
"If you come home early, we’ll go on a little trip."
Your promises carry on the best intentions, but I can hear their hollow.
"Come on. Just drive away with me…"
If only it were that easy.
Maybe I’m just too young and the wrong things matter more than they should. Maybe I’ve already missed my chance to make things right. Maybe I was never meant to have a chance at all. Who knows; but maybe, when I’m brave enough to leave my demons behind, we can take a road trip away from the world.
We could hide away. Go anywhere we want.
Just you and me, against the grain.
where is my crown
we are princesses without kings we are pictures without frames we skipped stones alone we read bedtime stories to ourselves and we sat upon our own shoulders beneath the bursts of july fireworks because of you we were not born daughters we entered this world as women and on our own we are princesses without kings
city limits
i have not been gone for very long but i have already found pieces of you that have stowed themselves away and traveled along the distance there are days when i hear your laugh in my lungs and afternoons where my senses become yours and I feel the sun on my back just as you would my plates hold your dinners and my chalice holds your wine your words escape my mouth and I spend many nights tossing and turning a midst your dreams and to think that passing city limits would be enough to escape you
Much Too Good
They spent many nights sprawled across the sheets and covered in sweat, confessing their sins and comparing the ways the world had failed them. They tried hard not to romanticize each other; they both thought themselves much too good for that. She didn’t want him to be the man who swept her off her feet and saved her from perdition. He didn’t want her to be the woman who showed him what love truly was. She was far too strong and he loved himself far too much to let each other fall into that kind of trap. It was why they had spent so long holding onto the wrong hearts and sleeping in the wrong beds.
Their pasts were full of wasted days trapped under the grips of one night stands and shallow promises, all in hopes of being saved or saving another. Denial was able to settle in without much notice, wreaking havoc on whatever truth they had left within themselves that seeing straight was nearly impossible. Her denial had buried itself deep, burrowed beneath a whole world of soil, but in time, he was able to wrench it from below. His had been hidden in a fog, surrounding him in a mist that spread for miles, but slowly, she had lifted it from his eyes. They breathed in the fresh air and clarity dawned upon them like never before. Yet, it was bittersweet. With their visions unblurred, it almost seemed inevitable. One would fall harder and it would be best to not to get too close.
And that’s what they did. As open as they were, they kept their hearts locked away, only for themselves to keep. Though, it was no surprise when plans went awry. Perhaps it was she that fell first. Perhaps he had already fallen. Perhaps he had never fallen at all. But whatever it was, between the sheets and parking lot rendezvous, knees were cut and bleeding.
Her heart grew fonder and she grew less and less afraid to lose it all. And she had hoped that during those nights, when their gazes would lock and all became bare, that maybe he felt it too. She had hoped that he knew he truly did love her better, loved her harder, and loved her in all the right ways.
And perhaps he wanted her to know that he hadn’t been mistaken in choosing her and that it wasn’t too late. And that maybe, she was what he needed and that he humbled his heart. Maybe he had hoped that she knew she truly did love him better, loved him harder, and loved him in all the right ways.
They spent many nights sprawled across the sheets and covered in sweat, confessing their sins and comparing the ways the world had failed them. They tried hard not to romanticize each other.
They both thought themselves much too good for that.
i fell in love
i. i watched the sky turn from day to night and that was the first time i had ever fallen in love. ii. i caught sight. a glimpse of him; of what was mine and that was the second time i had ever fallen in love. iii. he bent back my spine and said that i had magnificent eyes and that was the third time i had ever fallen in love. iv. i severed the ties between he and i; i drew a line and that was the last time i ever fell in love.

i want our mattress on the floor.
i want our empty fridge.
i want your dirty ashtray

i want our starving stomachs.
i want your old stained couch.
let's hide within
your crumbling walls
and never ever be found.
fireworks.
the sky is clear on new years at least in my town but i feel fireworks in the marrow of my bones when i think of kissing you
Daliring Kandila.
I remember once when I was young, I had gone for a car ride with my father. It was something we did when he would come home; he would need to go out and buy a new razor or want to look at some fishing poles. He wouldn't say anything to me, but there was a mutual agreement between us that I could "tag along". And the car ride itself was no different. Not a word would be spoken and it had become a silence that I would grow accustomed to. Neither of us knew what to say, really; we were strangers more than anything. And why I had ever agreed to sit in the car with him time after time, just to say nothing, I'll never know, but on we went. For some reason, it was this particular ride that I had begun to question the presence of my father. He made it a habit to disappear for long periods of time when I was a child. My mother told me he was "traveling" or "entertaining a client", but eventually, anything she said sounded something like "he doesn't want to be around." But where was he going? How bored could he be? Maybe he really was traveling the world. Or maybe it was just something I wasn't meant to understand just yet. I pondered this as I sat beside him, watching his feet dance around the pedals as he changed gears. And as I questioned his existence in the outside world, I pondered my existence within his. He would never really look at me. It seemed I was just another piece of the house, a piece of the room to be minded, but never really noticed. I had wondered if could tell that I had grown taller since the last time I saw him, or if he could see that my hair was a little bit longer. I wondered if he knew what grade I was in or that I had finally lost that tooth that had been hanging on for so long. It seemed to me that he lacked any sort of observation skills when it came to anyone else but himself and it bothered me like nothing else. It bothered me not to be noticed by him. I was bothered and we found ourselves at a red light and it was then that I heard him speak to me for the first time since he had finally come home. I was startled for a moment because most of the time, he would never speak directly to me, not until I was older. He had always spoken to me through my mother. "Have her do this", "tell her this", "remind her and ask her this". He would badger my mother in their native tongue, knowing full well that I could understand him as plain as day. But this time, he spoke to me, and I flinched. It went unnoticed. "You see that woman over there?" he said, nodding his head towards an arm hanging out of the car to our right. "You see her? Look at her hands. She's got such perfect hands. Daliring kandila." I watched as those hands flicked the embers off the cigarette that dangled from it's fingers. "When I was a boy, back in the Philippines, there was a woman that lived next door to your Nanay. She had the most beautiful hands. They were always manicured, always clean, always painted pink; never any other color but pink. And she would wear these gold rings with giant gems on them and she would smoke in her rocking chair while she watched the kids walk home from school. Your Tito and I used to get cigarettes from her after school. We always stared at her hands. 'Daliring kandila', we would say." "Fingers like candles." I replied. After that, he became silent again. And as I sat there in the quiet once more, replaying the story in my head, I looked at the woman with the beautiful hands. She flicked her cigarette and I watched the embers fall. I thought about my father and what he had told me, and a part of me changed. The part of me that hated my father, the part of me that I hadn't discovered quite yet, suddenly seemed to believe that underneath his absence, underneath the idea of him, that there was a real human being there. He wasn't just some question anymore; he was an actual person, with memories and things he wanted to remember.
But it was that realization, the sudden epiphany of his humanity, that made me hate him more. It made me hate everything he did and everything he didn't do. It made my invisibility to him hurt all the more and I had felt more transparent than ever in that moment. If he could notice the woman with the candle fingers, why couldn't he notice me? What could I have done to be so forgettable, even when I sat right beside him? It took the presence another woman for him to talk to me, to notice me, to remember me. What did that mean about my existence? What was it about that other woman, an entire car away, that made her stand out? I looked at the woman with the beautiful hands. She flicked her cigarette once more and I watched the embers fall again. The light turned green. My father drove onward. Eventually, we were window to window with the woman and I turned my head to face her. To glare at her. To memorize and remember everything about her so that maybe one day I could be her. I looked at the woman with the beautiful hands and she looked back at me. Her nails were pink.
hurt.
i. i hid within the cracks of your shattering heart i had hoped to become a splinter instead i became the very thing that put you back together ii. i lay beneath the skin of your consuming bruise i had hoped to make you ache instead i became the very thing that dulled the pain iii. i floated above your head as the unforgiving sun i had hoped to make you wither instead i became the very thing that helped you grow iv. i had once hoped to be all the things that made you hurt but you have turned me into a killer with kindness as a weapon of choice no doubt i will be relentless
smoke clouds
you blew smoke clouds into the air and as i inhaled it was like breathing in your very soul i suffocated silently feeling the constriction in the fibers of my lungs everything about you consumed me filled me you smoked me out for a moment i sputtered but soon the air i breathed consisted only of you
tomorrow never knows.
if the world ended tomorrow i would find myself weeping tears of crystalline joy and pumpkin spice chai latte if the world ended tomorrow i would find myself standing knee deep in the rippling waters of all my memories
where i remember manny's burgers for dinner your spiderman pillow beneath my head and the thick sea of royal purple sheets
as the earth around us crumbled beneath our feet
whether the end is nigh or nigh to never
if the world ended tomorrow i would find myself
blissful in the thought of us
i can’t wait
to come home
to your cigarette fog
and your ganja dreams
i miss the roughness
of your sheets
and the softness
of the sun
beaming through your window
i am hungry for our
taco truck
just down the street
and i thirst for our
32 ounces
from our gas station
along the way
i miss our urban kingdom
it was a place
where we
rotted in simplicity
i long to be
back in the place
that i call
home
