“It happens. I’m a teacher, that just comes with the territory.” He was still smiling and waving it off as no big deal. In his mind it wasn’t. “I think that’s definitely a matter of opinion, but thank you. This conversation has been nothing short of fascinating for me so I’m glad to see I’m not boring you too badly.” Self-depreciating jokes were easy for him and he smiled at her, though the expression grew a little stiff at her next words. “I guess that’s the level of my humor… dad jokes.”

“I’m glad I could fascinate you.” Stella’s eyes widened when she realized what she’s said. “Oh no, I didn’t mean it like that I swear!” She said, shaking her head. “My dad was a really funny guy, it’s not an insult really.”

“Me? I’m exactly like everyone else, by which I mean I’m one of a kind, of course. Unique, just like every other person. It’s great.” He grinned, laughing to himself. “Mad? Me? I’m never mad. A bit crazy but never full on mad.”

“You’re kind of confusing, anyone ever told you that?” She asked, grinning. “In that case don’t go crazy on me.”

“Maybe I’m just used to it. When you talk to much anyway, you learn to adapt,” he responded, joking it away and shrugging his shoulders. “I don’t mind, you know. As a teacher I… well I don’t make a lot, but it’s livable. And nothing wrong with letting yourself have a treat every now and again.” Seth kept the offer open, but didn’t push her to accept it, willing to back down if that’s what she’d prefer. “Sorry… sometimes I just can’t help myself.”

“Used to being ignored?” She asked, furrowing her eyebrows. She couldn’t help but feel a little twinge of sympathy. “I don’t know why, you have a lot of interesting things to say. And I’m fine. Really.” She said, offering a friendly smile. “My dad used to trick me like that all the time. You’d think I’d be used to it by now.”

“Yeah- Well you’re good.” She shrugged and smiled. “It does seem like something fun. I absolutely suck at drawing.” 

“Doesn’t everybody have one thing they’re really good at drawing? Even the worst artist?”

He chuckled at her response, smiling over genuinely at her. “Thank you. I don’t mind them though. Sometimes they need a time to be able to explore their own thoughts. I don’t think they get enough of that. So even if they aren’t listening, I like to think my time isn’t wasted.” The waiter came back with their drinks then and Seth grinned and thanked him before looking back at the girl. “I think everyone thinks that, honestly. Though personally I don’t mind footing the bill since I think good company is what makes food taste the best. No hair, really? then this might not have been the best place…” he trailed off, almost looking concerned before breaking out into another smile. “Sorry, I’m kidding, I promise.”

“I guess that’s why I’m not a teacher, I would hate to be talking to people who weren’t listening.” She said, realizing that sometimes that happened anyway despite her occupation. “You don’t have to pay, really. Being a waitress isn’t always fun but it does pay decently.” She said, taking a sip of her drink. She almost choked, looking down to make sure her food was hair free. “Not funny.” She said, although she was still smiling.

“That’s true, but no one will ever claim to be like most people. I think that was more the point I was going for,” he corrected before nodding and striking a pose. “Gotcha, no more moving.”

“I guess that means you don’t think you’re like most people either?” She asked, taking a pencil from her bag and beginning to draw. “Please don’t be too mad if this turns out completely horrible.”

“No one is like most people. But that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy things. And you have a willing model here who will do pretty much whatever you need him to.”

“Someone has to be like most people in order for there to even be a most people.” Stella hesitated a moment before opening a new page in her sketch book. “I don’t need you to do anything but try and hold still, okay?”

“Eh, maybe one or two. It was my first couple of days, I’m just happy they showed up for class at all.” Seth laughed the whole thing off easily, shaking his head. His expression quickly shifted to something that was a cross between amused and disgusted as she told her story, shaking his head. “People actually do things like that? Well… no I’m not really surprised per say, but even so you’d think there would be easier ways to get a free meal.”

“Well, I’m sure I would have listened in your class.” Stella said, offering a smile. “People do things like that all the time, which goes t show I’m not the only person who thinks free food tastes better. Although I prefer my free food not to have hair.”

“No!” Zoey responded quickly, shooting a glare at the other though realizing she was likely being teased. “Spare me. And it’s not wrong it’s just often stupid and banal and mostly worth fact checking and shouldn’t be taken as a reliable source. Where knowledge comes from is very fucking important. That’s why there are things called sources.”

“You don’t think they fact check things before letting her say them on television?” Stella asked, raising her eyebrows. “Interesting take, although I’m positive they do. They can’t just let the woman say anything.”

Everleigh tilted her head. “From what I can see, you definitely don’t seem bad at it.” She told her. “It looks pretty good.” 

“Thanks.” Stella said quietly. She was used to giving compliments on others art, but she wasn’t used to getting compliments of her own. “It’s just a thing I do to pass time.”

“What’s there to know? Well, I mean there’s plenty to know and I am fascinating but people sketch people they don’t know all the time.”

“I’m not people.” Stella shrugged. “I mean I am people, I’m somebody, I’m just not like most people.”

Ever raised one of her eyebrows, and just laughed. “Well that’s one change of an attitude.” The brunette shrugged, not really showing a lot of interest. “You looked really stressed out, I wanted to see what you were doing.”

“Drawing can be pretty stressful. Especially when you’re not very good at it.” She said, offering a small grin. “I’m fine, though.”

Jolting in her seat as she put down the magazine she was not reading, she felt her brows knitting together into a frown as an incredulous smile etched upon her lips. “Wow, I wasn’t looking at you actually. Just staring at nothing.” Not very believable but true. Perhaps she should get rid of her habit of staring into space. “Sorry if I make you uncomfortable of anything though. My bad.”

Stella immediately felt bad. It wasn’t as if she had never caught herself staring at someone by accident before. “I’m sorry, I just assumed.” She said, shaking her head. “It’s not a problem, really. Don’t apologize.”

“You have, yes. Doesn’t mean you won’t change that opinion in the future, but since you’ve already made an impression it means you’ve judged. Also you didn’t tell me pointless details, you whined at me not to kill you. There’s a difference. But of course you’re the kind of person who learns things on Oprah. Why am I even surprised? Are you trying to compliment me or make a joke? It’s hard to tell which.”

“Is this your way of telling me you want to know the pointless details of my life?” She asked, raising an eyebrow. “What’s wrong with learning things from Oprah? Knowledge is knowledge no matter where it comes from. It was a joke..”

“You’d think that, but it’s not really true. It’s less fun if you do it for work than if you do it for fun.” Evan shrugged his shoulders, propping up his feet casually. “Hey, if you want to, I’m not gonna complain. My body is yours to do what you like with.”

Stella took a sip of her drink, only to nearly spit it out when he said that. “Yeah, maybe some other time. Like.. when I know you better.”
