Rōshigumi is a tense slice-em-up where you use your giant sword to slash apart enemy spaceships for the Shogun. Of course, you’re secretly a traitor to the Shogun, but let’s not go there right now.
We made this for the A Game By Its Cover jam, where you take a fictional Famicase cartridge and try to make a game out of it. Our game is based on this crisp cover by Rogue Cache.
As 2016 comes to a close, and we sit at our windows and watch the snow pile up everywhere we don’t want it to be, it’s only natural that we become reflective, like the treacherous ice on our roadways. Or, that is to say, we reflect on the year and all we’ve accomplished. It’s been a banner year for the SweetHeart Squad, both professionally and personally, so let’s put on our non-existent SHS winter hats and cozy up to another season of Fireplace For Your Home on Netflix and have ourselves a little retrospective.
The first third of the year was mostly spent on our flagship title Party, Darling?, a dimension-hopping, procedurally-generated adventure game. There were laughs, gaffs, tears, and triumphs, but the important thing is that we finished! We released the game in April to reasonably positive reviews.
We did take a break from our project in January to put together a game for GGJ 2016 called Rip It! Grip It! Sip It! We’re super proud of this one. It’s a sidescrolling action game where you attempt to exorcise demons from a series of hapless victims. It features a homemade punk rock soundtrack and some gorgeous visuals.
Apart from the release of Party, Darling?, we also had a particularly productive April. We made a bunch of little things for LOWREZJAM. SODZEN was our most popular entry, scoring some positive buzz and a handful of very appreciated donations. Good Duel Game still gets a fair bit of traffic from the local multiplayer crowd, and Stone Cold Sexy still routinely disappoints people searching for non-specific adult content on itch.io.
Once school was over, we did a run of game jams.
In May we did City Sim Jam and made Deluge Suites, a tower-building game where your apartment block is constantly sinking. This is the last game we made using S-TENGINE 2, our custom engine. (We might use it again in the future, but we’ve been branching out a lot lately.)
In June we met for OJAM 2016 and made #MURDERJAM2016, a short murder mystery game set at a game jam.
In July we did A Game By Its Cover 2016 and made STRUNG OUT In Heaven’s High, a space exploration game made in PICO-8. It was based on a video game cover concept by Daruma Studio, which was directly inspired by the music of David Bowie. We had a lot of fun making this one.
In August we took a crack at LDJAM 36 with DYSCOVR, an online exploration game where you pilot a rover on a faraway planet. Players can leave piecemeal messages about the artifacts for others to read. It still gets played fairly regularly, so there’s plenty of new messages to check out about jade synthesizers and knobs that need wiggling.
After LD we dropped off the map for a while. The remaining active SHS members started getting jobs and we had less time and energy to devote to the squad, so we didn’t do a whole lot as a team through September and October.
In November we put out server.hack(), a procedurally generated board game about stealing files. We’d been meaning to make a board game for a while, and we were looking to do a project for PROCJAM, so things just fell into place. The game got posted to reddit and we got a fair amount of buzz, probably because we used the words “procedurally generated”. Meanwhile, we submitted SODZEN to A Good Bundle to help raise money for the ALCU and Planned Parenthood.
To finish off the year, we made a game for LDJAM 37 called Bouncing Balls with the Boing Boing Boys. It’s a two-player arena game where you slingshot each other to death in a bouncy castle.
It’s been quite a year for the squad personally, too. We’ve been moving around and getting jobs and tweeting and god knows what else. We’re hoping to keep the creative spirit alive in 2017 and crank out some more weird, crazy stuff. Our first project of the year will be making something at the Global Game Jam in January. STRUNG OUT IN HEAVEN’S HIGH is an unconventional exploration game made for A Game By Its Cover 2016. We took our inspiration from Daruma Studio’s STRUNG OUT IN HEAVEN’S HIGH, made for My Famicase Exhibition 2016. It was a blast to make this game and we had a lot of fun with the endless Bowie references. The game was lovingly made in pico8.
