June 4th 2018- Partner Skype Meeting
I recently had the pleasure to meet with my learning partner Mercy to share information with each other about trends in our industry and in adult education. In our Skype discussion we had the opportunity to share our findings. Mercy's blog posts about trend in ESL training and adult education both highlighted technology and its increasing dominance in learning (i.e.Virtual classrooms, mobile apps and tablets) and how self-directed learners can now have the options of learning through varied platforms at their own desired pace and convenience.
it was interesting as we both mentioned technology playing a role in trends in the industry and adult education (I spoke of VR, MOOC and virtual classrooms in my blog). We both agreed that technology can be an effective learning tool for adult education and that was educators we must not be afraid to use these tools. We felt that the assignments this course has use doing is an excellent way for us to test out the various methods (i.e. Podcast, blogging and Skype).

Critical thinking 101
Competency-based education has become a hot topic in higher education circles these days -- it is becoming increasingly popular as the country searches f...
May 24th 2018 - In my research in learning more about adult education, I came across something that really spoke to me: Competency-based education. Moving away from the traditional teaching methods, competency-based education supports a structure that is more flexible by allowing the learner to demonstrate mastery at that specific topic before moving on to the next level, all at their own pace (Mendenhall 2012).
As a student myself, flexibility is often one of the main deciding factors in whether or not I will take a program at a place. If an institution takes my previous education into consideration, I’m more likely to do a program with them as it allows me to save extra time and money. My situation is most likely similar to many people around me; they can utilize their previous experiences and life skills and challenge certain courses and move on to other courses that is of use to them to gain a higher earning potential and better life (Mendenhall 2012).
Looking at this from the perspective of an organizational trainer, competency-based education serves many benefits for employers. Not only is it productive and cost effective, but it is efficient as trainers enables employees to achieve the required competency required to do the task. I remember sitting in training classes before where I can clearly see a peer is lost and confused with the coursework and is being dragged through the training. When it came time for the application or testing this person did not do well.
In traditional training environments, an instructor may teach a class covering the job tasks that a staff is required to do in a certain role. For example, I remember when I first started my job at the airport; it was a three week long program that covered everything from how to use the program to check in someone, to make flight changes and then also learning how to do a gate. Some people barely understood the check in process, let alone the different buttons and steps and rules required to do a flight change. As an instructor utilizing competency-based education, this would have been rolled out in different steps where students would have to demonstrate mastery and understanding before moving on. For example, they would need to demonstrate they know how to check in a guest first before they would move on to the more advance and technical aspects of changing flights and such.
What this means to me as a trainer is that you are providing a unique personalized experience for the student. While it may be easier to teach the whole program in one go to the class, it is neither effective nor productive. A trainer utilizing competency based education needs to be transparent with the expectation, the evaluation that will be done and the progressions of the next steps. Feedback and communication will be important as we set the direction for employees in what they need to learn the skills required for the job. By using competency based education, we also give people the opportunity to be in control of their future, for example, those who want to advance we can also provide the next set of competencies to advance in their careers.
Those people who develop the ability to continuously acquire new and better forms of knowledge that they can apply to their work and to their lives will be the movers and shakers in our society for the indefinite future.

May 18th 2018 - With the evolution of technology, our ability to adapt to change often defines our success. I’m currently taking this course to get an idea of what Adult Learning is like to possibility get start a career in organizational training. In order for me to come out and be a successful trainer, it is important to be aware of the trends in organization training and the changes that are happening.
Unboxed Technology issued an article back in January covering training trends in 2018 which I though was very useful. One in particular that caught my eye relates to virtual reality. With all this talk of advances in technology, one would imagine there would be a huge shift towards virtual reality and machine learning. However, as it’s still in its early stages, I imagine it to be rather costly to do so, not everyone will be like Walmart and have the financial ability to jump on the VR ship right away. This is definitely something to keep on my radar though as it will be a trend that will continue to grow for sure. Companies may want to incorporate a blended approach of classroom learning and then applying some real life scenarios into the training.
Another focus brought up was the learner experience. What is definitely changing is the expectation of the method of instruction. Gone are the training days where you sit in a classroom for 8 hours a day staring at a trainer in front of you. Things such as virtual meetings and classroom participations have proven to be more cost-effective and equally beneficial in terms of having an engaging classroom experience. This provides valuable insight for me in that I must keep up with technology to avoid being “outdated.” Embracing various methods of training such as having Skype Conference calls, webinars, posting YouTube videos or Blogs are ways I make my presence in this industry to show that I am keeping up with industry trends and skills to teach learners.
Micro-learning (a new term I learned today) is also very effective and relevant in today’s training. A telephone sized binder of notes will no longer work for us humans who now have an attention span lower than a goldfish. By offering too much information at once will just have people zone out rather than absorb the content.
Speaking of goldfish attention span, this is where my blog will end. If you want to read more about Walmart’s VR training, check out the links below:
